AIRCRAFT - First fully UK-built Islander completes maiden flight

Pictured: Britten-Norman's first Islander aircraft to be assembled in the UK.

The first Britten-Norman Islander to be assembled in the UK from detail component level has taken to the skies, completing its maiden flight from Bembridge Airport on the Isle of Wight.

The aircraft took off at 14:25 on Thursday 3 September, marking a major milestone for Britten-Norman’s UK manufacturing operation, and has now entered its flight-test programme.

The aircraft is the first Islander to be built at Bembridge from individual detail components through to a complete airframe, rather than being brought to the site as major sub-assemblies for final assembly. The milestone marks the latest step in Britten-Norman’s efforts to establish a continuous production line for the Islander at its historic Isle of Wight facility.

A second aircraft is already progressing through the same production line, while components for subsequent aircraft have been ordered. The company is working towards a continuous production cadence, with a strategic ambition to build eight aircraft a year.

For Britten-Norman, bringing complete airframe assembly back under its direct control is intended to give the company greater control over production sequencing, tooling and quality. It also removes a road movement of major sub-assemblies across Europe from the middle of every aircraft’s production journey, while allowing customer specifications to be incorporated during assembly rather than fitted afterwards. But the immediate significance is that the first aircraft has now successfully made the transition from the factory floor to flight testing.

“Operators want to know two things. Will the aircraft do the job, and will it arrive when we said it would,” said Richard Milne, chief operating officer at Britten-Norman.

“The first has been settled for a long time. Assembling the airframe here is how we settle the second, because it puts the sequence, the tooling and the quality standard in our own hands.”

The aircraft’s first flight also comes as Britten-Norman draws on decades of manufacturing experience at Bembridge to rebuild production capacity. The site has previously assembled Islanders at rates of more than 30 aircraft a year, and experienced employees are now passing their knowledge to a new generation of workers.

Peter Dowers, who joined Britten-Norman as a fitter in September 1978, has completed his 500th Islander with the company. He has spent this year passing on his airframe-building expertise to colleagues working on the new production line. Significantly, Dowers’ 500th Islander is the aircraft that has now completed its first flight.

Callum Trueman, now production manager at Bembridge, began his apprenticeship under Dowers’ mentorship in 2006. “This aircraft is Pete’s 500th and my first, and the next one is already on the line,” he said.
The Islander has a long-established track record in service, with approximately 350 aircraft operating across more than 70 countries and six continents. The fleet has accumulated around 20 million flying hours.
The newly completed aircraft is destined for the Falkland Islands Government Air Service and will move into the final stages of its programme once flight testing is complete.

Britten-Norman, the UK’s only civil A2-approved aircraft manufacturer, is now focused on turning the successful first flight into a repeatable production rhythm — with the next Islander already taking shape behind it on the Bembridge line.

From Opening the Canadian North to Connecting Colombia, a Legendary Aircraft Reaches a Historic Milestone

Calgary, Alberta - De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (De Havilland Canada) proudly celebrates a defining moment in aviation history with the delivery of its 1000th DHC-6 Twin Otter. This landmark aircraft, along with the 999th Twin Otter, will be joining the fleet of SATENA, Colombia’s state-owned regional airline, marking both a global production milestone and a meaningful chapter in a growing partnership.

Reaching 1000 Twin Otters produced and delivered is a powerful testament to an aircraft that has become an icon of rugged reliability, versatility, and purpose-driven design. Originally built to open up the Canadian North, the Twin Otter has spent decades connecting remote communities, supporting economic development, and operating in environments where few other aircraft can perform. Today, that same spirit of connection continues in Colombia, where this milestone aircraft will help link communities across mountains, jungles, coastlines, and rural regions.

“Delivering our 1000th Twin Otter is a proud milestone for De Havilland Canada,” said Brian Chafe, CEO of De Havilland Canada. “Built to connect people in the world’s most challenging environments, the Twin Otter’s success reflects the skill and dedication of our teams and the trust our customers have placed in this aircraft for generations. The aircraft represents SATENA’s fourth De Havilland Canada aircraft, reinforcing a partnership grounded in performance and shared purpose. For SATENA, whose mission is centered on serving remote and underserved regions of Colombia, the Twin Otter is more than an aircraft, it is an essential tool for national integration and opportunity.

“We are honoured to receive the 1,000th Twin Otter,” said Major General Óscar Zuluaga, President of SATENA. “This aircraft will play a vital role in strengthening connectivity throughout Colombia. As we welcome our fourth De Havilland Canada aircraft, we celebrate not only a milestone in aviation history, but a continued commitment to serving communities that rely on us every day.”

For more than six decades, the DHC-6 Twin Otter has proven itself as the benchmark for utility aviation, from Arctic operations to tropical climates, humanitarian missions to commercial service. Its exceptional short takeoff and landing (STOL) performance, durability, and adaptability have made it one of the most reliable aircraft programs in Canadian aerospace history.

The 1000th delivery is more than a number, it is a celebration of the people who design, build, maintain, and operate the aircraft, and the countless people around the world whose lives have been connected because of it.

As the Twin Otter continues its journey into the future, one thing remains unchanged: it was built to open up the North, and it continues to open up opportunity wherever it flies.
