SPECIAL COLOURS - Wizz Air Celebrates Its 250Th Aircrafta Major Milestone On The Journey To A 500-Aircraft Fleet

Wizz Air, the fastest-growing European airline and the leading ones in Central and Eastern Europe, today unveiled its 250th aircraft, marking a defining milestone in the airline’s growth story and placing the company halfway toward its goal of a 500-aircraft fleet. This achievement underscores Wizz Air’s sustained momentum and opens a new chapter for the airline as it continues to expand affordable, convenient air travel across Europe and beyond.

Beyond the fleet milestone itself, the 250-aircraft mark stands as a testament to Wizz Air’s long-term ambition, its disciplined growth strategy and the collective contribution of its people and partners. Reaching half of the airline’s 500-aircraft vision underscores how far the company has come in redefining accessible air travel across Europe and beyond – and how much opportunity still lies ahead.

“The 250th aircraft is far more than just adding another aircraft to our fleet – it is a defining moment in Wizz Air’s history,” said Wizz Air’s CEO József Váradi. “This milestone reflects over two decades of bold decisions, relentless innovation and the passion of thousands of colleagues and partners who share the same vision and believe in making air travel more affordable and accessible for all. It proves that our strategy is working, and our momentum now is stronger than ever. We remain dedicated to doubling our fleet in the decade ahead and providing ever more low fare flights to our customers. 250 is not just a number – it is a symbol of our ambition and a launchpad for the next chapter of our journey. Together, we will keep expanding, innovating and making air travel even more accessible for millions. The future is ours to shape. Let’s WIZZ!”

“We extend our warmest congratulations to Wizz Air on achieving the milestone of 250 aircraft in its fleet. This landmark 250th aircraft is a powerful demonstration of over two decades of successful partnership between Airbus and Wizz Air', said Johan Pelissier, President of Region Europe and Head of Commercial Europe for Commercial Aircraft. “And with over 260 A320 Family aircraft still on order, including the highly efficient A321neo, Airbus aircraft are the bedrock of Wizz Air’s ambition to operate one of the largest and most fuel-efficient fleets in Europe, and we are rightfully proud our aircraft stand as the core driver of Wizz Air's business model and its continued expansion across Europe and beyond.”

Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, said: “We are delighted to support Wizz Air in reaching this important milestone. Being part of delivering their 250th aircraft is a testament to the strength of our long-standing relationship and to Wizz Air’s growth story. We look forward to continuing to provide modern, fuel-efficient aircraft that enable Wizz Air to pursue its ambitious expansion strategy.”

At the centre of the celebration stood the reveal of the winning special livery from Wizz Air’s global design competition – a community-driven tribute to the airline’s journey so far and a visual expression of the shared future ahead. Bringing together designers, fans and employees worldwide, the contest highlighted the creativity, energy and sense of belonging that drive the WIZZ brand forward every day.

Furthermore, in celebration of this milestone, Wizz Air has launched a network-wide campaign, offering up to 30% off on select flights for travels from December to 26 March 2026. Tickets are already on sale at wizzair.com and via WIZZ mobile app.

Looking ahead, Wizz Air will continue to expand where demand is strongest, leveraging the efficiency advantages of its young and modern Airbus fleet to support sustainable growth across Europe and beyond. With a clear focus on punctuality, reliability and continuously elevating the customer experience, the airline enters its next chapter with the same ambition and pioneering spirit that have defined its path to the 250-aircraft milestone.

FLEET - Wizz Air in talks to defer Airbus orders past 2030

Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) is reportedly in talks with Airbus to defer the deliveries of around 100 aircraft due between now and 2030 until the next decade, Bloomberg reported citing internal sources.

According to the report, chief financial officer Ian Malin said at an investor event in Singapore that the talks were almost concluded.

The airline refused to comment on the article.

ch-aviation data shows that the LCC has an order book of 235 A321-200NX and forty-two A321-200NY(XLR)s directly from Airbus. It confirmed that it will convert at least some of its XLRs into standard-range units following the closure of the Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, which was earmarked to be a major operator of the extended-range variant.

Despite the reported deferral talks, Wizz Air continues to take new aircraft. Since the beginning of September, it took two A321-200NX for its Hungarian AOC, one A321-200NY(XLR) and two A321-2000NX for Wizz Air Malta, and one A321-200NY(XLR) for Wizz Air UK.

The move comes as Wizz Air is restructuring its operations to rein in costs. Following the winding down of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, a joint venture with the local government, the airline announced a renewed focus on its core markets in Central and Eastern Europe. Nonetheless, the airline remains profitable - it posted a net profit of EUR213.9 million euros (USD247.8 million) for the year ended on March 31, 2025, with a 21.5% EBITDA margin.

FLEET - Wizz Air Malta takes delivery of its first A321-200NY(XLR)

Wizz Air Malta (W4, Malta International) has taken delivery of its first A321-200NY(XLR), ch-aviation research shows.

9H-XLA (msn 12346) conducted a ferry flight from Airbus' facility at Hamburg Finkenwerder to Milan Malpensa on July 15, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. The factory-new aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1000 engines and features 239 seats in an all-economy cabin layout.

The airline has not disclosed when it will put the aircraft into scheduled service. Wizz Air had been expected to launch a new A321XLR service between Milan Malpensa and Abu Dhabi International in June 2025, but the plans were abandoned.

ch-aviation reached out to Wizz Air for comment.

9H-XLA is coming from Wizz Air Holdings' orderbook for forty-seven A321XLRs. So far, the group has received two units, with the first having been delivered to Wizz Air UK on May 20. As previously reported, Wizz Air Holdings is in talks with the European manufacturer to scale back the A321XLR order following its decision to dissolve subsidiary Wizz Air Abu Dhabi.

According to ch-aviation data, Wizz Air Malta's in-house fleet comprises fourteen A320-200s, six A320-200Ns, and eighty-four A321-200NX.

FLEET - Airbus delivers first Pratt & Whitney powered A321XLR to Wizz Air

Hamburg, Germany, 20 May 2025 – Wizz Air has taken delivery of its first of 47 A321XLR aircraft. The airline becomes the first in the world to operate the A321XLR powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, and the first European low cost operator of the type.

Wizz Air’s A321XLRs have 239 seats in a single class configuration featuring the newly designed Airspace cabin with an innovative lighting system and multiple settings to create a perfect environment at different phases of the flight, including boarding, dining, relaxing, sleeping and waking up. With the A321XLR joining its fleet, Wizz Air is enhancing its capacity to connect Europe and the Middle East.

Wizz Air is an all Airbus operator with a fleet of over 230 A320 Family aircraft in operation and 295 left to be delivered.

The A321XLR is the next evolutionary step of the A320neo Family, responding to market needs for more range and payload, creating even more flexibility and value for the airlines. It will deliver an unprecedented Xtra Long Range of up to 4,700nm, 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared with previous generation competitor aircraft, as well as reduced NOx emissions and noise. So far, Airbus has secured more than 500 orders for the type.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A321XLR aircraft is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft capable of flying with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

New international services from Bari will include:
2x weekly to London Luton (UK) from July 1, 2021;
3x weekly to Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, CH (Switzerland) from July 2, 2021;
2x weekly to Ioannina (Corfu, Greece) from July 3, 2021;
1x weekly to Mykonos (Greece) from July 3, 2021;
2x weekly to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion (Israel) from July 3, 2021; and
2x weekly to Abu Dhabi Int'l (UAE) starting on September 21, 2021.

New domestic destination will include:
2x daily to Milan Linate from July 1, 2021;
5x weekly to Venice Treviso from July 1, 2021.

The additional aircraft will boost the capacity of Bari airport by more than 676,000 seats per year while creating 40 direct jobs and more than 500 indirect ones, the airline said in a statement.

Including Bari, Wizz Air operates from four bases in Italy, the others being Milan Malpensa, Palermo, and Catania. The additional aircraft at Bari brings Wizz Air’s fleet in Italy to 12, while the extra routes mean the carrier now operates from 23 Italian airports to 179 destinations, including recently added routes to Bologna and Pisa from Brindisi.

The budget airline operates a fleet of sixteen A321-200NXs, with another 193 of the type on order. It also has twenty A321-200NX(XLR)s on the order book. Its current fleet also consists of thirty-four A321-200s, six A320-200Ns (with thirty-four more on order), and sixty-four A320-200s, according to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module.

Wizz Air to enter Norwegian domestic market

Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) will open a base at Oslo Gardermoen and launch domestic Norwegian routes effective November 5, signalling its increasing focus on domestic markets less affected by travel restrictions.

The Hungarian low-cost carrier will base two A320-200s at the Norwegian gateway and use them to launch services to Trondheim, Bergen (4x daily each), and Tromsø. Norway will be the second country, after Italy, in which Wizz Air will ply domestic routes.

Chief Executive József Váradi said the move was the "first step" in Wizz Air's planned expansion in Norway, where it will challenge the SAS Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian duopoly. While Norway is Wizz Air's eleventh largest market of origin with a 2.6% share in its total frequencies, the airline currently serves the country with aircraft based elsewhere.

"Once we are in the market, we will get more appetite for it and do more. Ultimately our long-term goal is to become one of the most significant airlines in the country," Váradi said.

According to the ch-aviation capacities module, the Norwegian domestic market is currently split between SAS (43.4% market share by capacity) and Norwegian (29.6%). Widerøe (WF, Bodø) has a 26.1% market share but operates predominantly thinner, regional routes, often subsidised by the government.

The airline also announced that it has reached a sales/lease-back deal with CDB Aviation covering six A321-200Ns. The aircraft will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2020 (four units) and the first quarter of 2021. The lessor already owns four A321-200s operated by the low-cost carrier, the ch-aviation fleets ownership module shows.
