ORDER - Korean Air Commits to Record Purchase of 103 Boeing Jets to Modernize Fleet

South Korea's flag carrier intends to buy 777-9s, 787-10s, 737-10s and 777-8 Freighters to optimize fuel-efficiency across global network

- Commitment will be the largest for the airline, adding to its March 2025 order for 40 Boeing widebody jets


WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire(opens in a new tab)/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Korean Air announced today the airline's intent to purchase 103 of Boeing's fuel-efficient family of airplanes to modernize its fleet and support the carrier's growth as it fully integrates operations with Asiana Airlines over the next several years.

Korean Air's commitment will be the airline's largest-ever order and Boeing's largest widebody order from an Asian carrier. When finalized, the deal will mark Korean Air's first order for the 777-8F and will support an estimated 135,000 jobs across the United States. The order will be posted to Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website once it is completed and includes:

Today's agreement was signed during the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable "Partnership for a Manufacturing Renaissance," and presided over by Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Kim Jung-kwan, South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

Korean Air's orders and commitments for Boeing airplanes in 2025 surpasses 150 units, following the airline's incremental order in March(opens in a new tab) for 20 777-9s and 20 787-10s.

Key facts:

The 777-9 can seat 426 passengers in a two-class configuration with a range of 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles) and will reduce fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes it will replace.
The 787-10 can carry up to 336 passengers with a range of 11,730 km (6,330 nautical miles).
The 737-10, the largest model in the 737 MAX family, can carry as many as 230 passengers with a range of up to 5,740 km (3,100 nautical miles), while reducing fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes it replaces. The airplane's efficiency and flexibility will enable Korean Air to serve more passengers on more routes with the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle airplane.
The 777-8 Freighter will be the world's largest and most capable twin-engine freighter, offering the highest payload and lowest operating cost per tonne of any large freighter and 30% better fuel efficiency and emissions than the airplanes it will replace.
Korean Air currently operates 108 Boeing airplanes including 737s, 747s, 777s and 787s. With 72 Boeing jets on order; the carrier's order book will grow to 175 airplanes once the deal is finalized.

Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook projects that Eurasian airlines will need to expand their in-service fleet from about 6,800 airplanes today to nearly 11,000 by 2045 to meet travel demand. AIRCRAFT - Boeing: Africa’s Airplane Fleet Will More than Double by 2045 to Meet Rising Air Travel Demand

• African airlines will need nearly 1,200 new airplanes; 75% will be single-aisle jets

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 3, 2026 – Africa’s young, increasingly urban population, growing middle class and improving infrastructure will drive passenger traffic to grow nearly 6% annually through 2045, one of the fastest rates globally, Boeing [NYSE: BA] said today. The region’s commercial airplane fleet will more than double from 755 to 1,625 over the next 20 years to support this demand, as projected in Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) for Africa.

Fleet expansion

Of the nearly 1,200 newly delivered airplanes expected by 2045, 870 will be single‑aisle jets to support expanding domestic and regional networks.

Demand for widebody airplanes will more than double, supporting fleet modernization and long‑haul network growth. Boeing also forecasts that the cargo fleet will grow from 60 to 150 freighters as the continent’s logistics, e‑commerce and high‑value export markets develop.

Passenger traffic growth

Intra‑African passenger traffic is expected to grow at a faster pace than the regional average, enabled by better flight connections. Europe remains the largest international passenger market for flights to and from Africa and is forecast to remain so through 2045. This is driven by expanding economic ties, enduring cultural and family connections, and rising tourism investment.

Boeing’s Pilot and Technician Outlook forecasts that as airlines grow their fleets and expand route networks, they will need 75,000 new aviation professionals: 22,000 pilots, 25,000 technicians and 28,000 cabin crew.

Alaska Airlines recently took delivery of its 100th 737 MAX, a milestone that reflects the carrier’s confidence in Boeing airplanes.

Why it matters: The delivery comes as Alaska continues to grow and renew its fleet with new 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner jets, supporting the airline’s plans to expand both domestic and international service.

The milestone also reflects the strength of Alaska’s decadeslong partnership with Boeing, rooted in a shared emphasis on safety and quality.

“We appreciate the fact that your values are the same as ours – leading with safety and quality,” said Shane Jones, Alaska Airlines senior vice president of fleet, products and guest experience. “The Boeing people are the difference makers.”

Partnership in action: Today, Alaska Air Group, which includes Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air, operates nearly 250 737s and five 787s. For many Boeing teammates, that means building airplanes they and their families later fly on.

“I take a lot of pride in working on airplanes, but especially Alaska Airlines’ airplanes,” said Nathan Gonzalez, a temporary Preflight Operations manager on the 737 program. “My wife and I fly Alaska at least once a year going home for the holidays, so it’s special knowing I’ve been involved in producing the planes we actually fly on."

The big picture: In January, Alaska signed the largest airplane order in its history – 105 737-10s, with options for 35 more, plus five 787s.

Regulatory approval clears another 737 MAX variant for service

Preparations underway to support first deliveries

SEATTLE, Aug. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire(opens in a new tab)/ -- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has granted Boeing [NYSE: BA] an amended type certificate for the new 737-7 airplane, clearing it for commercial service.

"This important certification validates the rigor of our airplane's design and recognizes the determination and resilience of our 737 MAX development team," said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has granted Boeing an amended type certificate for the new 737-7 airplane, clearing it for commercial service.

"Our team of dedicated engineers and test experts worked through challenges, an extended pandemic, and the transition to new certification processes," Pope added. "Through it all, our team stayed focused on completing all requirements and delivering a safe and more capable airplane to our customers."

The smallest and longest-range member of the 737 MAX family, the 737-7 model serves an important market segment by offering 135 to 160 seats (in a two-class configuration) while providing about 10% more range potential than its siblings. Like other 737 MAX jets, the 737-7 reduces fuel use and CO2 emissions by 20% and noise footprint by 50% compared to the airplanes it typically replaces.

The regulatory approval caps a multi-year certification effort in which Boeing demonstrated through comprehensive testing and analysis that the airplane meets all commercial aviation regulations. The test program, which began in 2018, included:

An updated engine anti-ice system to address a potential condition that was discovered during flight testing

The FAA also updated Boeing Production Certificate No. 700 (PC 700) to include the 737-7.

The 737 MAX family order book stands at more than 7,200 airplanes, of which more than 2,300 have been delivered through the end of June 2026.

The 737-7 typically seats 135-160 passengers in a two-class configuration and offers a range of up to 3,800 nautical miles (7,040 km). The airplane is designed for exceptional performance for operators flying out of airports at high altitudes and hot climates.

The other 737 MAX family members offer other unique capabilities:

The 737-8 seats 160-180 passengers with a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km). It can profitably serve almost any short and medium-haul market.

The 737-9 has three more seating rows than the 737-8 and serves 175-195 passengers with a range of up to 3,300 nautical miles (6,110 km).

The 737-10, the largest in the family, offers the best per-seat economics of any single-aisle airplane. It seats 185-210 passengers with a range of up to 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km). Boeing is working to certify the 737-10 this year.

The 777-9 test fleet recently completed a first: five jets airborne in 24 hours.

During the two-day campaign, the team conducted systems, propulsion and interior tests and reached a first-flight milestone. They completed six flights, nearly 18 hours of flight testing and additional ground tests.

Catch up quick: The 777-9 program has logged more than 4,800 flight test hours across the 777-9 test fleet. In addition to the dedicated test airplanes, production-configured airplanes – like this seventh 777-9 to fly – are supporting certification work ahead of first delivery in 2027, the company said.

With longer range and stronger operating economics than previous-generation airplanes, the 737-8 gives Somon Air the flexibility to serve high-demand routes while positioning the airline for future growth, including planned service to London, Beijing and Guangzhou.

SEATTLE, JULY 16, 2026 — Boeing [NYSE: BA], Lufthansa and Rolls-Royce will soon conduct flight tests of innovations meant to improve fuel efficiency and reduce noise.

Being tested on these flights are:

The Next Generation Inlet, a reduced-length engine inlet demonstrator with advanced acoustic treatments. The inlet enables the integration of more fuel-efficient engines onto future platforms, and reduces weight and drag while maintaining the acoustic performance.

Modified departure and arrival procedures, including Intelligent Operations flight paths, which aim to reduce community noise around airports. These flight paths are algorithmically generated using multiple data sources to identify opportunities for fuel-efficiency and noise benefits.

The testing, which begins later this month at the Boeing site in Glasgow, Montana, is being conducted on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet that’s serving as Boeing’s 2026 ecoDemonstrator Explorer airplane. This Boeing 787-9 is scheduled to be delivered to Lufthansa at a later date and features Trent 1000 engines from Rolls-Royce. The testing is expected to run through mid-August.

The innovations being tested are part of Phase III of the Federal Aviation Administration’s CLEEN (Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise) program.  Panamanian flag carrier to grow, modernize its all-737 fleet over the next eight years

The airline recently launched a landmark Prague-Sanya service, connecting the Czech Republic and China with a technical stop in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan ─ a journey of more than 14 hours.

The 737 MAX family delivers exceptional efficiency and performance, reducing fuel use by 20% compared to the airplanes it replaces. The 737-9 seats up to 220 passengers and has a range of up to 6,110 kilometers (3,300 nautical miles), giving airlines the capacity and extended range to open new routes and profitably serve high-demand markets.

The A350F features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, with fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers. The A350F is also the only freighter aircraft that will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, coming into effect in 2027.
