FLEET / ORDER - Abra Group orders A330-900s and more A320neos

Abra Group, which is the owner of Avianca, GOL and Wamos Air, has announced it has increased its commitments for additional Airbus A320neo-family aircraft and secured a new lease-agreement for A330-900s.

With Airbus, the Group decided to firm options for another 50 A320neo-family aircraft, taking its total number of aircraft on order to 138. All of these should be delivered by 2032.

Abra also signed a lease-agreement with Avolon for seven A330-900s. Interestingly, the lease-agreement was signed by GOL, but an Abra Group statement says that the exact deployment of its new widebodies on order will be decided closer to delivery in 2026.

However, internal GOL-posts shared on X points into the direction that GOL will indeed operate them.

Apart from these new orders the Group also holds open orders for four A350-900s and 96 more Boeing B737MAXs.

The increase of orders is part of Abra Group's effort to expand and go more head-to-head with LATAM Airlines, the biggest carrier of the continent. Part of that plan is also launching a subsidiary in Chile in the coming years.

In January of this year, the Abra Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Azul to merge GOL and Azul but this MoU has been terminated in September 2025, because Azul was still not done with its restructuring and progress was lacking.

FLEET - Avianca airlines to lease nine additional A320neo Support

Avianca airlines (AV, Bogotá) will dry-lease nine incremental A320-200Ns from BOC Aviation.

The lessor announced it entered into an agreement with Airbus to buy the factory-new jets that it will then lease out to the Colombian flag carrier. The A320neo aircraft will be powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines. avianca airlines is expected to take delivery of them in 2027.

The airline is also expecting delivery of seventy-eight A320-200Ns directly from the European manufacturer as part of its ongoing fleet renewal process.

According to the ch-aviation Commercial Aviation Aircraft Data module, avianca airlines currently operates twenty-four A320-200Ns. Subsidiaries avianca airlines Ecuador and avianca airlines El Salvador operate five and twelve aircraft of the type, respectively. Besides the A320-200Ns, avianca airlines' in-house fleet comprises six A319-100, sixty A320-200, and sixteen B787-8s.

The carriers of Avianca Group currently do not lease any aircraft from BOC Aviation.

ROUTES - Avianca restarts 11 seasonal routes from the United States

Avianca has resumed eleven direct international routes for the high midyear season, aiming to provide increased direct connectivity between regions of the United States and various destinations in the Americas, including Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, among others.

From Las Vegas and Orlando to: San Salvador.

From Chicago to: Guatemala City.

From Washington to: San José.

From New York to: San Pedro Sula, Cartagena, Pereira and Cali.

From Miami to: Cartagena and Cali.

From Orlando to: Medellín.

Avianca (Colombia) and Viva (Colombia/Peru) merger process was annulled by Colombia’s aviation regulator due to procedural irregularities, meaning they will restart it without the companies having to reapply.

Avianca adds to its vintage collection an airplane with a retro livery from LACSA

Avianca unveiled the third aircraft in its vintage collection. This time it is an Airbus A320, registration N821AV, which sports the colors that LACSA -Líneas Aéreas Costarricenses Sociedad Anónima- used in the 90s. With this, the airline continues to honor the legacy and history of Latin American aviation that it carries with it today and allows it to project its mission and vision into the future. This aircraft is expected to cover flights to and from Costa Rica in the coming days.

“With this Lacsa retro airplane we celebrate the Costa Rican origins that are part of our operation. We are proud to be important players in connectivity from Costa Rica and take the Pura Vida that characterizes us so much, beyond our borders, promoting tourism to the country,” said Viviana Martin Manager of Avianca Costa Rica and Director of Inter-Institutional Affairs of the airline.

Lacsa was founded in 1945 and 47 years later became part of Grupo TACA, a company that grouped the main airlines of Central America and in 2009 merged with Avianca to form one of the Latin American airlines with greater connectivity in the region. Currently, more than 400 employees of the airline work in Costa Rica, from where it operates 68 weekly flights to North, Central and South America, making it the largest operator in the country.

To successfully capture this image, 30 expert technicians worked for 12 days on the airline’s three retro livery.

Avianca honors TACA

Avianca is honoring its heritage with a special themed TACA-livery on Airbus A320-200 N567AV (4567). The aircraft was unveiled on 2 November 2022 and the tail is wearing the colorful TACA-livery and logo of the 1980s-1990s.

TACA and Avianca merged back in 2009 with Avianca being the remaining brand. The airline was founded in 1931 by an entrepeneur from New Zealand with ambitious plans to launch an airline in each South American country. TACA's were launched in Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia and Venezuela but eventually only the one of El Salvador survived.

Between 1989 and 1995, TACA acquired Aviateca (Guatemala), LACSA (Costa Rica) and NICA (Nicaragua), establishing Grupo TACA and all airlines operated under the TACA-brand until the merger with Avianca in 2009.

Avianca launch 23 new international routes.

After inaugurating 6 domestic and international routes this year, Avianca continues to expand its network with the launch of 23 new routes.

Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador will be the countries with the greatest growth thanks to the availability of new non-stop flights.

From Colombia, travelers will continue to enjoy the most robust offering of itineraries and will now have 13 new direct routes from Cali to: New York, Cancun, Mexico City, San Jose and Quito; from Medellin to: Aruba, Mexico City, Orlando, San Jose, Quito and Guayaquil; from Bucaramanga to Miami, and for its part Bogota will debut direct flight to Toronto, Canada.




The highest growth in Colombia will be mainly in cities other than Bogota due to the persistent operational limitations of its air terminal related to the high influx of state and non-scheduled aviation, as well as infrastructure limitations. In addition, it should be recalled that, between June and July, the authority has declared 92 times the Ground Delay Program affecting more than 465,390 passengers in the industry on more than 3,500 flights.

Despite this challenging situation, Avianca is determined to maintain its competitive position in Bogota and to work together with authorities and operators to provide customers with quality service.

From Ecuador, travelers will have direct flights from Quito to New York, Miami, Cali and Medellin, as well as from Guayaquil to New York, Miami and Medellin.

Now, Hollywood’s Walk of Stars, the Statue of Liberty and the gastronomic variety of Mexico and Colombia will be just a few hours away from Costa Rica thanks to Avianca’s direct flights from San Jose to Managua, Los Angeles, New York, Mexico City, Cali and Medellin.

Guatemala City will be only 4 hours away from the U.S. capital thanks to direct flights to Washington. From here, direct flights to New York and Miami will also be resumed.

Avianca will have resumed 91% of its direct routes in El Salvador by the end of the year. In addition to the El Salvador-Ontario route announced in July, it will now also have a non-stop flight to Orlando.

AVIACIÓN AL DÍA

Avianca Holdings temporarily suspends 24 international routes.

Due to the pandemic, restrictions in several countries and the uncertainty that travelers still have, Avianca Holdings will temporarily suspend 24 international routes, mostly in South America, operating from Colombia, El Salvador, Panama, Ecuador and Guatemala, but also to the United States and Europe.

According to the airline, the routes will be resumed according to the evolution of the pandemic, in some cases during the first semester and in others, during the second semester, clarifying that, for the time being, such connections will not be closed indefinitely and in some cases will be resumed as from April.

In view of the new scenario, Avianca Holdings extended the validity of its ‘Compra tranquilo’ policy, whereby those who purchase tickets from January 1 to March 31, 2021 can change their travel date up to three times to fly until December 31, 2021, with no change penalty.

Avianca begins 787 Barcelona service from Jan 2017

Avianca starting next week is introducing Boeing 787-8 operation on Bogota – Barcelona route, currently served on daily basis. Effective 02JAN17, the Dreamliner aircraft will operate this route, replacing A330-200. With this aircraft adjustment, the Star Alliance member’s European routes will be exclusively served by Boeing 787-8.

Colombia's Avianca set to acquire Argentina's Macair Jet

Avianca (AV, Bogotá) is set to acquire Argentine operator Macair Jet (VM, Buenos Aires Aeroparque) sources close to the deal have informed La Nacion newspaper. The news follows recent speculation that aside from Macair, the Colombian operator had also considered either Sol Líneas Aéreas (8R, Rosario, SF) or Austral.
