FLEET - AirAsia Group to return 25 older aircraft by YE26

AirAsia Group plans to return 25 older aircraft to lessors during 2026 as it cuts fixed lease costs and reduces capacity in underperforming markets, while new A220-300 and A321-200NY(XLR) deliveries are due to begin in 2028, the group disclosed in its second-quarter
results.

While it did not identify the 25 aircraft by type or air operator's certificate (AOC), group chief executive, Bo Lingam, previously said that the group plans to return twelve A320-200s to lessors in 2026, most of which will be coming from its Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) and Philippines AirAsia (Z2, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) operations.

AirAsia declined to confirm the specific aircraft types and AOCs involved in this exercise.
Amid financial pressures exacerbated by the Middle East conflict and higher fuel costs during the second quarter, the group reduced fleet allocations in the Philippines and Indonesia to focus on higher-yield domestic and core Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) routes.
It added that the financial pressures were concentrated in short-haul operations in the two countries, as well as Thailand.

"Where routes or entities underperformed, specifically in long-haul Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, we acted swiftly to cut unviable capacity, right-size fleet, and delay non-essential launches like Bahrain," Lingam said.

The fleet realignment comes alongside wider capacity cuts, with group capacity down 11% year-on-year in the second quarter. AirAsia Group plans to cut third-quarter capacity by 20-25% year-on-year before restoring capacity to what it described as "pre-war levels" in the final quarter.

AirAsia Group has also suspended underperforming long-haul routes and delayed its planned Kuala Lumpur International-Bahrain International-London Gatwick fifth-freedom service, the launch of which had previously been deferred to March 2027 amid the conflict in the Middle East.

"Uncertainties persist, yet our low-cost DNA, agile network model, and dominant position on core trunk routes give us full confidence in our ability to stabilise performance, protect shareholder value and capitalise on the industry’s eventual recovery," Lingam said.

ORDER - AirAsia places landmark order for 150 A220s

Malaysia’s AirAsia has placed an order for 150 latest generation A220-300 aircraft. The purchase agreement is the largest single firm order placed for the A220 and propels the programme beyond the 1,000 firm order milestone, underscoring the aircraft's global market appeal.

The contract was announced at a ceremony at the Airbus facility in Mirabel attended by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of Capital A and Advisor to AirAsia Group and Lars Wagner, Chief Executive Officer Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. The event took place in the presence of the Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada and the Honourable Christine Frechette, Premier of Quebec.

The purchase agreement makes AirAsia a new customer for the A220. The airline also becomes the launch customer for the aircraft's new cabin configuration of 160 seats. The increase in capacity, adding 10 seats, is made possible by the addition of an extra overwing exit on each side of the aircraft.

The A220 complements AirAsia’s existing Airbus fleet and will play a key role in advancing the Group’s network and growth. The aircraft will service destinations across ASEAN and into Central Asia, freeing up larger aircraft to fly longer routes.

“We have built AirAsia by making bold decisions at the right moment, not the easiest moment. This order reflects our long-term discipline and the scale of our ambitions. The A220 unlocks new markets and routes and brings us closer to building the world's first true low-cost network carrier,” said Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor to Air Asia Group. “Our partnership with Airbus spans more than two decades and has been central to everything we have achieved. Today is another milestone in that journey, and there are many more to come.”

“The A220 will provide an optimal platform for AirAsia, combining low operating costs with the range that will enable the carrier to open new routes across Asia and beyond,” said Lars Wagner, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. “Airbus and AirAsia teams have been working tirelessly to reach this landmark agreement, which is fully aligned with the airline’s new network strategy.”

Combining the longest range, lowest fuel consumption and widest cabin in its class, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category, carrying between 100 to 160 passengers on flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). At the end of March 2026, 501 A220s had been delivered to 25 operators worldwide.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

ORDER - AirAsia orders additional A321XLRs

In the sidelines of a state visit by the Malaysian Prime Minister to France, Airbus and AirAsia signed an agreement for an order for additional Airbus A321XLRs for the low-cost carrier. The new deal, announced 4 July 2025, is for an order for 50 aircraft, with options to convert 20 of its exisiting A321neo orders into the XLR-variant.

With this latest order, AirAsia now has 70 A321XLRs on firm order. It expects to take delivery of its first one in 2028 but discussions are being held with Airbus to see if this can be brought forward. Next to the XLRs, the low-cost carrier also has open orders for 358 A321neos.

According to an article of FlightGlobal, AirAsia is also in negotiations with Airbus about its fifteen A330-900s it has on order. The CEO of the airline is considering to cancel this order or swap it for other narrowbody aircraft as the size of the A330 is not fitting the airline's business model anymore. By 2035, AirAsia envisions to have a fleet of 500 narrowbodies.

Today, the AirAsia Group, which consists of AirAsia (Malaysia), AirAsia Cambodia, AirAsiaX, Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, Teleport, Thai AirAsia, and Thai AirAsia X is operating a fleet of 254 aircraft. The breakdown of this is 168 A320s, 40 A320neos, three A321-200P2Fs, fifteen A321neos, and 28 A330-300s.

FLEET / ORDER - AirAsia converts A321neo to LRs; to resume deliveries

AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International) has converted 36 orders for A321-200NX to the A321-200NX(LR) variant as it prepares its narrowbody fleet for a planned merger with the long-haul unit AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International), the CEO of parent holding Capital A Tony Fernandes told reporters during a briefing.

"It's traditionally never been done by low-cost carriers, but we believe now that with the aircraft that Airbus has given us, the A321-200NX, A321-200NX(LR), A330-900, and soon to come the A321-200NY(XLR), we can build the first global network carrier and connect the world with low fares through our hubs in Kuala Lumpur International, Bangkok Don Mueang, and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta," he declared.

The A321-200NX(LR)s are scheduled to start delivering in 2025. AirAsia currently has a firm order for 362 A321-200NX powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, and the bulk of the commitment will remain in the non-(LR) variant for now. While AirAsia has not taken any new aircraft since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, as it was heavily affected by restrictions on travel across Southeast Asia, it is now picking up the pace.

The ch-aviation fleets history module shows the last new aircraft to deliver to the group were three A321-200NX to AirAsia and Thai AirAsia (FD, Bangkok Don Mueang) inducted on December 31, 2019. Since then, the group has added a limited number of second-hand aircraft, but Fernandes expects deliveries direct from Airbus to resume in June 2024. A total of 24 new aircraft are expected by the end of this year.

In terms of the A320neo Family, the Malaysian carrier also operates twenty-nine A320-200Ns and two A321-200NX, while Thai AirAsia operates eleven A320neo and two A321neo. Both airlines, as well as Philippines AirAsia (Z2, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) and Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), also operate A320-200s.

The aircraft will complement the twenty A321-200NY(XLR)s on order by AirAsiaX. The long-haul unit currently operates eighteen A330-300s and has fifteen -900s on order.

Fernandes emphasised that the LRs would increase the carrier's flexibility in serving destinations in North Asia, Australia, and Central Asia. On an unrelated point, he pledged to launch services to Kenya - the group's first African destination - by the end of 2024. Going forward, the carrier plans to use the A330neo for a much broader intercontinental expansion, including through a host of fifth-freedom routes. Currently, the group's only intercontinental routes are to Australia.

"The network expansion is to cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam Schiphol, Bratislava, Barcelona El Prat, Copenhagen Kastrup, Cairo International, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, and Cape Town International. East Coast in North America - New York, Miami International, Toronto Pearson - will be via Europe, and West Coast - San Francisco, Los Angeles International, Vancouver International - via Japan," he said.

Fernandes added that the proposed sale of AirAsia and AirAsia Aviation Group, the investment vehicle for AirAsia-branded carriers outside Malaysia, to AirAsia X was progressing.

"It's moving. It's off the airbridge. It's moving towards the runway," he said. "The stages would be approval from the stock exchange, sale and purchase agreement signed, shareholders' approval, court and raising capital. To do this plan, we also need to raise capital”.
