Tokyo, JAPAN - The JAL Group revises its cargo flight operation plan on the Narita-Chicago route for the first half of fiscal year 2026 as follows. Any further changes will be announced separately.

The "JAL Jubilee Express" is a special aircraft livery created through a tie in between Tokyo DisneySea -- celebrating its 25th anniversary -- and JAL, an official sponsor since the grand opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983. The two companies first collaborated on a special aircraft livery in 2001, the year Tokyo DisneySea opened, and this aircraft marks the seventh partnership to date.
The aircraft design features "Jubilee Blue," the theme color of the Tokyo DisneySea 25th "Sparkling Jubilee" anniversary event, as its base. It will also be decorated with Mickey Mouse and other Disney friends dressed in special outfits, along with DisneySea AquaSphere -- the symbol of Tokyo DisneySea -- and Mount Prometheus. This special design extends to inflight items such as headrest covers and paper cups. Passengers can enjoy a wonderful journey through the skies aboard the "JAL Jubilee Express" aircraft, immersed in the festive spirit of this 25th anniversary.

FLEET - Japan Airlines to use domestic fleet on international ops

JAL - Japan Airlines (JL, Tokyo Haneda) is considering introducing dedicated domestic-service aircraft on international routes amid growing demand, vice president for international route strategy Abe Motohisa said during the Routes Asia 2025 conference. As quoted by Aviation Week, he said the airline aims for better fleet utilisation by operating these jets during the night.

The aircraft with domestic-service cabin configurations are expected to operate out of secondary airports, such as Hiroshima International. Abe did not disclose when the expansion might begin or which aircraft are being considered for the new international routes. He added that although the concept is under consideration, the plans face challenges due to a shortage of available pilots.

ch-aviation asked the airline for comment but it was not immediately available.

Japan Airlines currently boasts a fleet of 199 aircraft and distinguishes between domestic- and international-configured aircraft of the same type.

The airline's B787-8s feature three distinctive cabin layouts. The aircraft operating on domestic routes are equipped with 291-seat three-class cabins, while the jets used on international services have 186 or 206 seats in the dual-class configuration. Japan Airlines operates ten B787-8s with 186 seats, nine with 206, and four with 291 seats.

Its domestic B767-300ERs have 252 or 261 seats in the three- and two-class layout, respectively. The jets operating on international services are equipped with 199 seats - 24 in business class and 175 in economy class. Japan Airlines' B767-300ER fleet consists of eight aircraft configured for international services and 16 in domestic configurations.

The company also has different cabin layouts for its B737-800 fleet. Domestic aircraft are outfitted with 20 seats in business and 145 seats in economy class. The Japanese flag carrier operates 35 aircraft with this cabin layout. Meanwhile, seven aircraft operating on international routes have 144 seats in a dual-clas

Introducing the “DREAM SHO JET” with Shohei Ohtani


Summary


JAL will launch the "DREAM MILES PASS" project on September 27, to support Shohei Ohtani and the "youth across Japan who are pursuing their dreams."

The total travel distance of 892,440 km (*1) that Shohei Ohtani covered from being a high school baseball player to becoming a top Major League player will be given back as airline tickets to the youth who need to travel to pursue their dreams.

As a symbol of the project, the specially painted aircraft "DREAM SHO JET," featuring a design of Shohei Ohtani, will take flight starting September 29.

JAL aims to create “relationships and connections through travel” and work together with customers and local communities to achieve a sustainable future. As part of this effort, JAL will launch the “DREAM MILES PASS” project on September 27, 2024, to support the youth pursuing their dreams, like Shohei Ohtani, through travel assistance in collaboration with JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) members.

(*1) As of the end of August 2024. The travel distance was calculated based on the official games of the teams Shohei Ohtani has been a part of. according to JAL’s research.

Background and Purpose of the Project

One in four middle and high school students reported having given up on their dreams due to the burden of travel.

In recent years, social issues surrounding the youth, such as “mobility inequality” and “experience inequality,” have been highlighted. For example, the cost of travel for club activities can strain household finances, forcing students to quit their clubs, or the inability to afford travel and tuition fees for studying abroad can lead to giving up on such opportunities. The economic burden of travel has become a barrier to achieving dreams. Particularly, the younger generation, who experienced periods of restricted physical movement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, faces additional economic pressures from rising prices and a weaker yen, resulting in significantly fewer experiences compared to other generations.

In fact, a survey conducted on current middle and high school students, university students, and young professionals revealed that approximately one in four respondents had given up on their dreams due to travel-related reasons. Additionally, a survey of teachers, including club activity advisors, showed that over 60% felt that current students have fewer travel opportunities compared to other generations. This highlights the impact of reduced travel opportunities and the resulting “experience inequality” between generations. (Survey conducted by JAL in September 2024)

JAL has continuously supported children and youth who will shape the future through various initiatives, such as the “Children's Dream Support Miles.” In collaboration with JMB members, JAL aims to address social issues like “mobility inequality” and “experience inequality.” To support young people in pursuing their dreams, like Shohei Ohtani, by increasing their travel and experience opportunities, JAL has decided to implement the “DREAM MILES PASS” project.

About the project overview

JAL has focused on the fact that Shohei Ohtani, who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers in MLB and has a support contract with JAL, has traveled approximately 892,440 km - equivalent to circling the Earth 22 times - since entering Hanamaki Higashi High School, achieving various dreams along the way. Under the message “Give every dream a chance to take flight,” JAL will provide airline tickets (*2) from the departure points to the destinations of young people who need to travel to realize their dreams, based on Ohtani's total travel distance.

In addition, to enable adults across Japan to support the youth pursuing their dreams, JMB members can donate their miles. Each mile donated will be converted to the equivalent of 1 yen, and the corresponding amount will be provided as airline tickets. This system allows adults to participate in the project as well.

To offer travel opportunities to as many youth as possible, JAL plans to conduct multiple rounds of this initiative, starting with the first phase and continuing into the next year.

About the project application process

The youth who have dreams that require travel will participate in the project as “Dreamers,” while adults who support these young people will participate as “Supporters.”

“Dreamers” can enter their dreams, departure location, destination, and other details on a dedicated website (*3), and an original design “Dream Pass” will be issued. The application is complete once the “Dream Pass” is shared on social media. “Supporters” can also participate through the dedicated website.

FLEET - Japan Airlines finalises order for A350-900s and A321neo aircraft

Farnborough, United Kingdom, 23 July 2024 – Japan Airlines (JAL) has signed a firm order with Airbus for 20 A350-900 widebody aircraft and 11 single-aisle A321neo, finalising a commitment announced earlier this year.

The order was announced at the Farnborough Air Show 2024 during a signing ceremony with Yukio Nakagawa, Executive Officer and Senior Vice President Procurement of Japan Airlines, and Christian Scherer, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Commercial Aircraft business.

The new A350-900s will join the carrier’s A350 fleet serving international routes, while the A321neo will operate on domestic services within Japan. To date, JAL has ordered a total of 52 A350s, with 18 in service. The A321neo contract represents JAL’s first order for the Airbus single-aisle product line.

Executive Officer and Senior Vice President Procurement of Japan Airlines Yukio Nakagawa said, “We are delighted to have signed the firm order for the introduction of additional A350s and new A321s. We will accelerate the introduction of the state-of-the-art and fuel-efficient aircraft to provide our passengers with excellent service and to reduce CO₂ emissions. The deal includes 10 787-9s with options for 10 more, adding to JAL's current fleet of more than 50 of the popular widebody jet.

SPECIAL SCHEME - JAL Unveils 'JAL MYAKU-MYAKU JET' for International Routes in Expo 2025 Celebration

Japan Airlines announces the introduction of a special livery on its international flight aircraft, the Boeing 787-8, to commemorate the 2025 World Exposition (EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan) held in Yumeshima, Osaka, from April 13 to October 13, 2025. This special design, featuring the Expo's official character 'MYAKU-MYAKU' among other original elements of the EXPO 2025, is scheduled to begin operations on June 3. This initiative follows the introduction of a special livery on the Embraer 190 aircraft operated by J-AIR, based at Osaka International (Itami) Airport, marking it as the second phase in this series.

The deployment of the second aircraft is aimed to introduce both domestic and international passengers to EXPO 2025, encouraging visits not only to the exposition but also to various destinations throughout Japan. FLEET - Japan Airlines has announced the decision to introduce a total of 21 A350-900 from Airbus, along with 11 A321neo, and 10 B787-9 from Boeing, as part of its fleet renewal plan

The introduction of both aircraft types is planned over a period of approximately six-years, starting in fiscal 2027. The A321neos will replace B767 domestically, as one of the A350-900 on order joins the domestic fleet. Also, 21 B737-8 to replace its current B737-800 fleet.

Toulouse, 14 December 2023 – Japan Airlines (JAL) has taken delivery of its first A350-1000 from Airbus’ delivery centre in Toulouse, France. The A350-1000 is set to become the airline’s new international aircraft, initially flying on the prestigious Tokyo Haneda - New York JFK route.

JAL’s A350 is configured in four classes. The First Class features six Suites, each with a choice of three modes: sofa, seat and single bed or double bed. The Business Class also offers Suites, with 54 seats and privacy doors. Meanwhile, the Premium Economy Class (24 seats) and Economy Class (155 seats) both feature more personal space and comfort in their respective categories.

JAL’s A350-1000 cabin has been designed to make passengers immerse in the elegance of Japanese aesthetics and tranquillity. Meanwhile, a serene ambiance highlights the beauty of Japan. The cabin’s stylish interior is tailored to a high quality, high comfort passenger experience which echoes JAL’s renowned service.
JAL has ordered 31 A350 aircraft, comprising 18 A350-900s and 13 A350-1000s. The carrier has been operating the A350-900 on high density Japanese domestic routes since 2019.
The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient widebody aircraft and the long-range leader in the 300-410 seater category. The A350’s clean sheet design includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort.

The A350’s unique Airspace cabin is the quietest of any twin-aisle in the sky. It offers passengers and crews the latest modern in-flight products for the most comfortable flying experience. The aircraft’s new generation engines and use of lightweight materials make it the most fuel efficient large widebody aircraft. The A350 is the quietest aircraft in its class featuring a 50 percent noise footprint reduction versus the previous generation aircraft, making it a good airport neighbour wherever it flies.

By the end of November 2023, the A350 Family has won 1,070 firm orders from 57 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.

Japan Airlines announced today that it will begin introducing its new Airbus A350-1000 International aircraft on the Tokyo (Haneda) - New York (JFK) route (JL006/JL005) starting from January 24, 2024. Additionally, JAL is scheduled to receive its second aircraft by the end of Fiscal Year 2023 (March 31, 2024), which will allow daily A350-1000 operations on the same flights. After the delivery of the third A350-1000, JAL has decided to expand the aircraft’s reach to include JAL’s Tokyo (Haneda) – Dallas Ft. Worth route.
Japan Airlines new A350-1000 aircraft will provide customers with all new cabins interiors that offer a comfortable and relaxing cabin space. And, the environmentally friendly aircraft offers improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise compared to previous international aircraft models. The operation of the latest fuel-efficient equipment enables a reduction of 15-25% in CO 2 emissions. Furthermore, in line with the expansion of the A350-1000 fleet, JAL plans to replace the amount equivalent to 1% of the onboard fuel with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on Japan-bound flights to reduce CO 2 emissions and further minimize environmental impact.
To enhance customer satisfaction and to strive towards a sustainable future, JAL will be replacing its fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs with new A350-1000 international aircraft that combines comfort and the latest environmental performance. FLEET - Japan Airlines to start B767 freighter ops in mid-1Q24

JAL - Japan Airlines (JL, Tokyo Haneda) intends to begin operating B767-300ER(BCF) flights on February 19, 2024, according to a December 5 statement from the airline. The flights, which remain subject to government approval, will mark the carrier's return to dedicated freighter operations after a 13-year absence.

While Japan Airlines is yet to disclose any details, the first of three B767 freighters it intends to introduce, ch-aviation fleets advanced data reveals, is JA653J (msn 40365), a 13.02-year-old B767-300(ER) undergoing conversion at Singapore Paya Lebar. A second out-of-service Japan Airlines passenger-configured B767-300(ER) - JA654J (msn 40366) - is also at Singapore Paya Lebar, while a third, JA619J (msn 37550), is at Guangzhou.

"The operation of the freighters will enhance stable and flexible air transportation capabilities, ensuring a steady supply," the airline's statement reads. "Furthermore, the development of a network strategy based on growing demand will ensure the satisfaction of customer needs and contribute to the sustainable development of the logistics infrastructure."

The initial schedule for the freighter operations show flights scheduled to depart from Tokyo Narita and Nagoya Chubu. Scheduled freighter flights will link both airports with Taipei Taoyuan, Seoul Incheon, and Shanghai Pudong.

NEW AIRCRAFT - JAL to add dedicated freighters

Japan Airlines has announced on 2 May 2023 that it will add dedicated freighters to its fleet as part of its updated business plan to expand its revenues from cargo. In total the airline will add three converted B767-300ERs to the fleet, the first of which is expected to arrive at the end of the 2023 fiscal year. JAL will utilize the new freighters on flights between Japan and destinations in East Asia, as well as domestic operations. It's currently unclear where the airframes are coming from.

The addition of the trio freighters means a return of dedicated freighters in the JAL-fleet after thirteen years when it retired its final Boeing B747-400BCFs. However, it's not the only expansion of the freight business JAL is developing as the company will also operate three Airbus A321P2Fs by their subsidiary Spring Airlines Japan for Japanese delivery company Yamato.
