ROUTES - My Freighter starts scheduled operations with Asia-Europe route

Uzbekistan-based cargo airline My Freighter has officially begun scheduled cargo operations with the launch of a new route from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) via its main hub in Tashkent (TAS).

Flights will operate twice a week on a Boeing 767-300 freighter.

Last month, My Freighter operated its first flight from TAS to Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) in eastern China.

This follows a network expansion in July 2024, when My Freighter began operating flights to PVG and Ezhou Huahu (EHU) after receiving authorization to operate routes to and from Mainland China in April of that year.

FLEET - US’s Samaritan’s Purse purchases one B767-300F

Samaritan's Purse (NSP, Boone, NC) has purchased a B767-300F from AFG Aviation Ireland, the lessor announced.

The aircraft, N367SP (msn 33510), was already introduced into Samaritan’s Purse’s fleet in February 2025. It is the first of the type for the US-based evangelical Christian organisation. It will replace the 56.5-year-old DC-8-72(CF), which the operator plans to retire in late 2025.

The aircraft is used for in-house freighter operations alongside a B757-200(PCF), with both providing heavy airlift capacity to deliver aid worldwide, the organisation told ch-aviation in March.

N367SP is a 19.5-year-old aircraft that operated between 2006 and 2011 for ANA - All Nippon Airways and between 2011 and 2024 for Express Freighters Australia.

The organisation’s fleet comprises the two Boeing freighters, one DC-8-72(CF), one Falcon 900EX, two G550s, one SkyCourier 408 (with two more on order¨), one Bell 407, one Bell 412, two CN-212-200s, one Cessna 172, one Cessna 182E, one Cessna A185F, one Cessna 208, five Cessna 208Bs, two Daher Kodiak 100s, one Daher Kodiak 200, one DHC-8-300, one King Air B200, two King Air B350s, and one Piper PA-18.

- Dedicated Air Tanzania freighter will support the East African nation's growing export and import market

NEW AIRCRAFT - Air Tanzania expects Africa's first production B767F

Air Tanzania (TC, Dar es Salaam) will become the first production B767-300F operator in Africa when it takes delivery from Boeing of its first dedicated freighter, the ch-aviation fleets history module confirms.

ch-aviation fleets advanced data shows the brand-new medium-body freighter, already registered as 5H-TCO (msn 67788), is currently awaiting delivery from Boeing's factory at Everett where it concluded its first successful test flight on March 19. Approached by ch-aviation, Air Tanzania Managing Director Ladislaus Matindi was unable to confirm a delivery date. Last month he said delivery was expected by the end of March.

A Boeing spokesperson could not immediately confirm the delivery date either. According to the OEM, the B767-300F is well-suited for developing new long-haul, regional, or feeder markets thanks to its intercontinental range capability and payload configuration. The aircraft benefits from advanced avionics and aerodynamics due to being constructed from a combination of light aluminium alloy and composites.

NEW AIRCRAFT - Air Tanzania now expects first B767 freighter by late 1Q23

Air Tanzania (TC, Dar es Salaam) expects delivery of its first dedicated freighter by the end of March as well as four more passenger aircraft before the end of the year, says Managing Director Ladislaus Matindi.

He told a media briefing in Dar es Salaam on February 20 that Air Tanzania (known as ATCL) expects delivery of one B767-300F by March 31, as well as one DHC-8-Q400, two B737-9 MAX, and one more B787-8 by the end of the year, which would vastly improve the airline's capacity as several of its aircraft are currently grounded for various reasons.

Matindi did not respond to a request for more information from ch-aviation. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the B767-300F freighter was ordered by TGF - Tanzania Government Flight (Dar es Salaam) – the state-owned aircraft lessor – on July 29, 2021. All of ATCL's aircraft are owned by and leased from TGF.

The Tanzanian flag carrier currently has 12 passenger aircraft, including four A220-300s, two B787-8s, one DHC-8-Q300, and five DHC-8-Q400s. Matindi confirmed that only eight aircraft in the fleet are currently functional. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module confirms that three A220-300s and the Dash 8-300 are out of service.

Matindi explained that two A220-300s are grounded due to technical problems with the Pratt & Whitney PW1524G-3 engines, but he is hopeful they could be back in service in March. The airline needs four spare engines for the two aircraft whose power plants were sent to Frankfurt, Germany for maintenance. "We expect to receive more spare engines from March," Matindi told The Citizen newspaper.

He said that one A220-300 was in service after the engine manufacturer provided replacement power plants in December.

Matindi declined to disclose how much the carrier has lost due to the faulty engines but said ATCL was still negotiating compensation from the manufacturer. "The compensation being issued is small compared to the loss we have incurred after grounding our aircraft," he said.

Meanwhile, a third A220-300 remains attached in The Netherlands over a land rights dispute between Tanzania and two Swedish investors. As reported, EcoDevelopment in Europe AB and EcoEnergy Africa AB were awarded USD165 million in damages after Tanzania unilaterally revoked a land rights claim. The companies persuaded a Dutch court to uphold the attachment of 5H-TCH (msn 55047) owned by TGF. According to The Citizen, the matter is pending before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Tanzania argued the attachment was unlawful because it was obtained a day after the state petitioned the ICSID to annul EcoDevelopment's award.

Matindo said SATCL would consider wet-leasing aircraft to bridge the gap before the A220-300s are returned to service. "We are currently monitoring demand. We may consider leasing aircraft if demand exceeds the airline's capacity."

Meanwhile, he said, ATCL plans to increase its frequencies to Guangzhou, China, to twice weekly from March 2. The carrier also serves Mumbai International in India once weekly with the two B787-8s. In total, it serves 24 destinations, including 14 domestic routes.

Maersk launches Maersk Air Cargo

Shipping giant Maersk has announced that it is launching Maersk Air Cargo, a new cargo airline to support Maersk's global operations. As part of the launch, Maersk's current airline, Star Air, will be merged into the new airline which will be based at Billund.

Operations are launching in 2022, with three B767-300Fs, which are transferred from Star Air. Later, the two newly ordered B777Fs will also join the operations of Maersk out of Billund. Maersk Air Cargo will also lease three additional B767-300Fs, which will, initially, be operated by a third party and will be used to boost the company's flights to China.

Star Air currently also operates twelve B767-200Fs, mainly for the British Royal Mail and UPS. These contracts will continue for now.

Boeing Announces UPS Purchase of 19 767 Freighters

SEATTLE, Dec. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] today announced an order for 19 767 Freighters from UPS highlighting the 767 Freighter's outstanding operational efficiency and payload capability to serve its customers at a time of robust air cargo demand.

UPS was the launch customer for the 767 Freighter in 1995, and since then has ordered a total of 91 of the aircraft. The carrier currently operates 236 Boeing freighters including the 747, 757, 767 and MD-11.

iAero Airways looks to remove fleet cap; eyes B767s

iAero Airways (SWQ, Greensboro) has revealed plans to induct widebody jets as part of a petition to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to remove restrictions on the size of its fleet.

According to the application lodged last week, the Florida-based cargo and passenger charter specialist said only that if given the go-ahead, it would induct an unspecified number of B767s in 2022. Although iAero declined to comment on the exact nature of the aircraft, given the plan has yet to be finalised, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that one B767-300(ER), N827RC (msn 26389), is due to iAero and is currently parked at Miami Int'l.

Formerly known as Swift Air (United States of America) (WQ, Greensboro), iAero's freighter fleet consists of one B737-300(F), two B737-400(F)s, four B737-800(BDSF)s, and two B737-800(SF)s, while for passenger services, it deploys eight B737-300s, twenty B737-400s, and five B737-800s. Its application said it also plans to induct two more unspecified aircraft by the end of 2021.

While iAero’s certificate authority was originally limited to the operation of no more than five large aircraft, the DOT has increased the cap, most recently in August this year when it was raised to a maximum of 45 aircraft.

FedEx firms options on B767F

FedEx has announced, in a call with investors about its Q4-2021 results, that it has decided to firm options on twenty B767-300Fs. The additional freighters are set to be delivered in FedEx's fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

With this order, the cargo company has now ordered a total of 150 B767-300Fs with Boeing. Of these, 102 have so far been delivered. With two taken-over from Silk Way West Airlines, FedEx's current B767F-fleet is 104 aircraft strong.

Next to the B767Fs, FedEx operates/utilises a fleet of twenty ATR42s, 23 ATR72s, 65 A300Fs, eight B737-400Fs three B737-800BCFs, 119 B757Fs, 46 B777Fs, thirteen MD-10Fs and 55 MD-11Fs. The remaining MD-10Fs (all -30Fs) are planned for retirement by the end of next year.

Icelandair merges Air Iceland Connect, to add B767-300(F)s

Icelandair (FI, Reykjavik Keflavik) will convert two of its B767-300(ER)s into freighters and lease them back under a long-term deal with Titan Aircraft Investments.

With a continued positive outlook for cargo operations post COVID, I am confident that the B767-300ER freighters will allow us to maximize new opportunities in our markets," Icelandair's Chief Executive Bogi Nils Bogason said.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Icelandair operates four B767-300(ER)s, of which it owns three and dry-leases the remaining one from GECAS. Three aircraft are active, while one of the owned units has been parked at Reykjavik Keflavik airport since early February 2021, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. Icelandair also owns a fourth B767-300(ER) which is dry-leased to Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) and has been in Guangzhou for maintenance since February 19, 2021.

The airline did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment on the identity of the two B767s that will be sold, converted, and then leased back.

Icelandair's current freighter fleet includes one B757-200(PF) and one B757-200(PCF), both of which are dry-leased.

Titan Aircraft Investments is a joint-venture between Titan Aviation Holdings and Bain Capital Credit. Titan Aviation Holdings owns twenty-one B767-300(ER) freighters, of which 19 are dry-leased to fellow Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings unit Atlas Air and two to ATI - Air Transport International, according to the ch-aviation fleets ownership module.

In a separate announcement, Icelandair Group has confirmed that the operational merger of its domestic unit Air Iceland Connect (NY, Reykjavik Domestic) with its mainline sister carrier will close on March 16, with all services branded and sold by Icelandair.

"The integration of Icelandair and Air Iceland Connect is an important step that will create a stronger and more streamlined airline with more options and improved customer service. Domestic flights are crucial for Icelanders and with this step, we can further strengthen our current network for all passengers with more accessibility and more competitive fares," Bogason said.

The Icelandic group announced the merger almost a year ago, in late March 2020. Air Iceland Connect will retain its own Air Operator's Certificate and its own staff, but will no longer use its separate brand or sales system. All sales and marketing will be done through Icelandair after March 16. Currently, tickets for domestic services are not sold on Icelandair's website and require a separate booking.

The merger will have no impact on the carrier's domestic network, which currently comprises services from Reykjavik Domestic to Akureyri, Egilsstadir, Isafjordur, and Vestmannaeyjar. The airline also has an interline agreement with Norlandair (FNA, Akureyri), covering services from Reykjavik to Bíldudalur and Gjögur, and from Akureyri to Grimsey, Vopnafjördur, and Thorshöfn.

Air Iceland Connect operates three DHC-8-Q200s and two DHC-8-Q400s. Icelandair itself does not ply any domestic routes and has no aircraft capable of landing at most of them, except for Akureyri and Egilsstadir which have runways capable of handling narrowbody jets.

Icelandair said the merger would lead to the development of "new products and services", which will be unveiled during spring 2021.
