AIRCRAFT - Unpacking the A350F’s new livery

Airbus transformed graphic design into a high-tech paint job for the first A350F
When the A350F rolled out of the paintshop last week, sporting shiny new livery, an almost four year journey came to an end. Beginning in October 2022, over 4,000 people submitted design proposals for the aircraft’s livery, with the winners announced at the 2023 Paris Air Show. Two designs were chosen as winners, which were then combined into one by the Airbus corporate design department.

Creating a digital mockup of the combined design was one thing, but bringing it to life was much more complicated. Successfully pulling off this paint job required close collaboration between the branding, paintshop, engineering and manufacturing, and marketing teams. Balancing delicate weight requirements with practicality and modifications to infrastructure in the paintshop, the successful completion of this livery is a credit to dozens of people at Airbus.

What did it take over the last four years to get here?

Turning a 1,000-square-metre canvas over to the public

Like all aircraft paint jobs, everything started with the design. But unlike all other Airbus paint jobs, the design came from the public. The competition was open to everyone and presented contestants with a unique design opportunity that would be hard to find elsewhere: a 1,000 m² canvas. Since freighter aircraft have almost no windows, contestants had the entire fuselage to work with, giving them a maximum level of creative freedom.

Two cardboard box-themed designs inspired by the freighter's cargo ended up being selected as the winners.

"The concepts were similar but focused on slightly different elements, so they complemented each other perfectly,” says Airbus Corporate Design Manager Cassian Koshorst, who spearheaded the integration of both designs. “We were able to place graphics from both designs – including adhesive tape, stickers, and stamps – exactly where we wanted on the aircraft, even adding extra details to the cargo doors to make them stand out.”

The distinctive A350 carbon-fibre weave design was also added to the vertical tail plane, to align with the other A350 prototype aircraft. It takes on additional importance with the A350F, as it is the only freighter on the market with a predominantly carbon-fibre airframe.

"Ensuring the feasibility of this unique paint design required close collaboration with the paintshop team, who approached the task with absolute dedication and enthusiasm to ensure every detail was executed to perfection,” affirmed Koshorst.


Safety was also given a high-tech boost as well. A digital zero-collision system deploys precise 3D laser mapping to guide the giant automatic painting platform around the fuselage, using sensors that automatically slow its movement as they approach the aircraft and stop it completely five centimetres from its exterior. This dramatically reduces stress for the painters, who no longer have to operate this platform manually, and lets them focus on paint quality, application and precision.

"For a new programme like the A350F, avoiding disruptions is vital,” says Sebastien Casellas, an industrial systems engineer in the Airbus paintshop. “Damage to the aircraft means costly repairs, schedule delays and bottlenecks in the paint halls. Since we’ve implemented this anti-collision system, there have been zero recorded impacts.”

Developing a custom aircraft primer for the A350 Family


With the design finalised and the industrial system modified to welcome the freighter into the paintshop, all that remains is to paint the aircraft – but that is no small feat either. While most people may think of the livery as cosmetic, it also serves to protect the aircraft, shielding composites from UV rays and metals from corrosion, insulating the fuselage from contact with everything from jet fuel to deicing fluid.

Proper paint application thus relies on a variety of different factors: the paint itself, the surface preparation, temperature and humidity conditions in the shop, the thickness of the layers and more. It also depends on the material being painted. The A350F surface is composed of more than 90% composite material, the remainder being metallic. Composites expand and contract differently with temperature changes when compared with metals and paint. 

"To optimise performance for composites, we developed a new, more flexible external primer that is specifically designed to absorb thermal stress,” says Monica Asuad Ferrer, Head of External Paints and Coatings at Airbus. Primer is perhaps one of the most important layers of the process: “It ensures adhesion, allows for paint stripping and repainting when the aircraft is in-service, and of course ensures a durable paint system that our customers expect,” Asuad Ferrer explains. 

Balancing complex artistry with aircraft weight restrictions

Once the aircraft is primed, there are still more variables to consider. The visible livery consists of several layers applied over the initial structural primer and external primer: an intermediate coat, then a base coat (when colour is added), before the final clear coat layer. A delicate balance must be struck here between design and weight, as dry film paint adds considerable mass to the aircraft, which amounts to approximately 400 to 500 kilograms on an A350. 

"First, the artistic vision must be translated into an industrial process that manages all technical and regulatory requirements,” says Maxime Chincholle, Head of External Livery Design for the A330 and A350 Families. “Both paint and adhesive films are technologies that have been mastered by our painting division, and they both deliver the same high levels of performance and durability.”

The A350F’s complex livery was thus achieved using a mix of decorative-film adhesives and paint. The adhesives are printed with the required design and colors and placed over the painted background. This saves several layers of paint and complex masking, and reduces the number of individual paint colours required. It also cuts down on the time needed to paint the entire aircraft, as the curing and drying time of each paint layer can significantly extend the painting schedule.

A full circle moment for the winners

And what did the winners of the design contest have to say when they saw the final result roll out of the paint shop?

"Looking back at the first sketch I did and seeing the final, brilliant reality, it seems impossible to believe,” says John Feehan. “But Airbus has made it possible, and even more so, delivered it all in a fantastic cargo package.”

Quinnten Iversen echoed a similar sentiment, saying

"I feel incredibly proud to see the design come to life. It’s a full-circle moment for the passion for aviation that I have long shared with my younger brother [co-winner Ellisten]. Knowing that my excitement and interest in aviation have played a part in what is a revolutionary aircraft for the industry is a truly special moment.”

Both men sent their support and congratulations to the various Airbus teams who helped make this livery a reality.

"What was in my mind that day has been elevated and combined to make for a very bold, striking livery that will no doubt cause a stir wherever it goes. Can't wait to see it up close!” says Feehan.


"I’m grateful for the many people who have worked hard to make this a reality,” says Iversen. “Getting started in my aviation career, I hope to continue contributing to the passion that has helped to guide me through life.

SPECIAL LIVERY / AIRCRAFT NEW - The First Airbus A350F Emerges with 'Delivery Box' Paint Job


The first flight test aircraft is now fully assembled and painted, with its maiden flight scheduled for the end of September.

Airbus has unveiled its first fully assembled and painted A350F.

The aircraft emerged from the paint hangar with a paint job resembling a large delivery package.


The paint scheme resulted from a competition organized by Airbus that attracted around 4,000 entries. Two winning concepts were combined to create the final scheme applied to the first A350F.

The aircraft is the first flight test prototype of the freighter and will now undergo ground testing before taking off.

Airbus has officially stated that the maiden flight will take place before the end of 2026.

Airbus currently anticipates the first customer delivery in the second half of 2027.

Ramping up A320 Family production

How Airbus is expanding its operations to meet growing demand
Responding to strong demand from airlines and lessors, Airbus is ramping up all its commercial aircraft programmes. The company’s industrial capability is growing fast, around the world – including two new A320 Family final assembly lines, in China and the US. The largest member of that family, the A321neo, is at the heart of this story.

Fun fact: an Airbus A320 Family aircraft takes off or lands somewhere in the world every two seconds. The programme has notched up nearly 20,000 orders. Moreover, in October 2025, it became the most delivered airliner type in history. The widebody market is also in robust shape, stoking demand for the Airbus A330neo and A350 Family. As supply chain delays have begun to ease post-pandemic, Airbus is executing an historic production ramp-up.

The A321neo, a firm favourite

Airbus is increasing production of all its civil aircraft programmes. The ramp-up focuses principally on reaching an output of 75 A320 Family aircraft every month in 2027, while maintaining the on-time, on-quality delivery customers expect.

This ‘rate 75’ is civil aerospace’s highest-ever production level, and it’s uniting Airbus, its affiliates and the entire supply chain in a mammoth push to reach it.

Airbus’ current backlog includes over 7,000 A320neo Family aircraft. The big story behind rate 75 is the runaway success of the A321neo in its standard, long range (LR) and extra long range (XLR) configurations. The largest member of the A320 Family has rapidly become an industry favourite, accounting for around two-thirds of the Family order book. Its popularity in terms of sales volume and speed is the dominant factor in Airbus’ decision to increase narrowbody production.

The sun never sets on A320 Family production

To produce 75 A320 Family aircraft each month, Airbus has strategically grown the programme’s global industrial footprint and setup over recent years. The final quarter of 2025 is pivotal to this expansion.

The inauguration in October 2025 of a second final assembly line (FAL) in Mobile, Alabama, USA, doubles A320 Family production capacity in the United States.

Coming just a few days later, the inauguration of the second A320 Family FAL in Tianjin, China, underscores Airbus' commitment to that country’s aviation market. It’s projected to become the world's largest by the early 2030s.  
These new FALs are an indispensable addition to Airbus’ industrial setup, adding flexibility and resilience to A320 Family production.

Notable features of the new Tianjin line include a range of advanced manufacturing technologies, as well as solar panels, reclaimed water and geothermal energy. Beyond the second line, for its part Airbus’ Mobile facility has undergone a major extension. This includes new double-bay hangars for A320 production, quad-bay hangars for the A220, additional paint shops, a new distribution centre and expanded delivery and welcome centres.

The expansion across continents confirms that making the A320 Family is an endeavour on which the sun never sets. Over 20 Airbus and affiliate sites participate in its production, on top of a total of ten FALs, located in Tianjin (China), Toulouse (France), Mobile (USA), and Hamburg (Germany). This reach, coupled with a committed global supply chain, is central to making rate 75 a reality.

Alongside the FAL boost, Airbus is in the midst of transforming its customer line and delivery centre activities, to bring customers a smoother, more consistent hand-over experience.

Home-nation investment – and bringing work packages in-house

In Europe, investment in Hamburg’s four assembly lines, the A320 Family’s historical home alongside Toulouse, makes them fully equipped to produce the A321. This includes the LR and XLR's often complex, customised cabins.

A highly-automated assembly hall for the A321XLR’s range-extending rear centre fuel tank was inaugurated at Airbus’ Augsburg, Germany, facility in September 2025. What’s more, a second A320 Family FAL at Toulouse’s Lagardère facility – the repurposed former A380 line – is due for completion by mid-2026.

Lastly, Airbus is strengthening its industrial system by acquiring Spirit AeroSystems' operations for the A350, A220 and A320 Families – a core aerostructures activity. The acquisition will welcome over 4,000 skilled, experienced employees to Team Airbus, further increasing the company’s aerostructure activities together with subsidiaries Airbus Atlantic and Airbus Aerostructures.

With a total backlog of over 8,600 aircraft, of which the A320neo Family represents the lion's share, Airbus' expanded industrial system is poised to continue leading commercial aviation.

NEW AIRCRAFT - Airbus completes first A350F wingset in Broughton


Broughton, 30 May 2025 - Airbus is celebrating a major milestone at its Broughton after finishing the first ever set of wings for the new A350 freighter aircraft (A350F).

The wings same line, for the A350F have been designed similarly to the A350 so can be built in the
allowing for operational and industrial benefits and improvements.

Engineered as the world's most advanced freighter aircraft, the A350F is designed to meet the evolving needs of the global air cargo market. Similar to the A350 widebody passenger aircraft, the wings incorporate the latest composite material technology, reducing weight and increasing aerodynamic efficiency.

Airbus is building two A350F test aircraft which will undergo flight tests throughout 2026 and 2027. 

The wings will soon be transported via Airbus’ iconic freighter, the BelugaXL, from Broughton to Bremen for final equipping before being sent to Toulouse to be joined to the fuselage of the first test aircraft.

A321XLR programme completes second cold-weather testing campaign

This week the A321XLR development flight-test aircraft (“FT3”, MSN11080) dedicated to the cabin returned from its four-day cold-weather ground testing at Iqaluit in northern Canada.

A few weeks earlier, one of the other A321XLR test aircraft (“FT2”, MSN11058) made a similar visit to Iqaluit. On that initial occasion the mission was to test the operation of the hydraulics and other systems at extreme cold temperatures – after an overnight soak at minus 40 degrees Centigrade.

“The objective of this most recent cold-weather campaign was to validate the aircraft operation in cold weather for ground operations,” says Tuan Do, Lead Flight Test Engineer.

He notes: “This time around we tested the cabin water and waste system – which required the temperatures inside the unheated cabin to ‘soak’ at below -15 degrees Centigrade overnight. To this end, several cold soaks were conducted over successive nights with the doors left open, while the outside temperature was around minus 20 degrees Centigrade.

In each case different heating and insulation configurations were applied for subsequent comparative analysis by the engineering department.”

As part of this, a new ‘cold weather option’ available for A321XLR operators, was tested in real conditions for the first time – it adds heaters to ensure the system doesn’t freeze-up overnight. The tests also validated the ‘standard aircraft’ configuration – ie. without the optional package activated - and a weight-saving opportunity configuration, with less insulation.


Of course, every airliner cruises at high altitudes where the outside temperatures are much lower. However, inside the cabin the water and waste systems operate in above zero temperatures. This is why ground testing (in a completely powered-down state) is specifically called for – so that the ambient environment inside the cabin and below the passenger deck, where many systems are located, can cold-soak at sub-zero temperatures.

“During our first five-day visit to Iqaluit a month ago, when we powered-up the aircraft in the morning, we would ‘wake-up’ the hydraulics, electrics, and other systems and see how long it took to operate the aircraft and get it ready for taxiing and takeoff.”


“There were also some flights to validate the landing gear operation in very cold temperatures. Notably, the A321XLR features an uprated landing gear – to support the higher maximum take-off weight of the aircraft (whose MTOW is 101 metric tonnes, vs 97 tonnes for the A321LR). Consequently, the shock-absorbers on this new variant are designed to handle higher loads compared with those on the other A320 Family members.


The test objective was to check the ‘weight-on-wheels’ signal, so the aircraft knows when the main landing gear shock absorbers are compressed or extended.


“There are many systems on the aircraft which depend on the weight on wheels signals to tell them whether the aircraft is in flight or on ground. So during our first visit to Iqaluit we verified how the weight-on-wheels function is affected by the physical changes in the main landing gear, and how shock absorber stiffness is affected by cold temperatures,” recalls Tuan.


Another design feature of the -XLR related to hydraulics which needed to be evaluated in the cold environment were new hydraulic lines which pass through Rear Centre Tank, located aft of the Landing Gear bay. “Our design office colleagues wanted us to check that the routing of the pipes did not significantly affect the hydraulic temperatures and operations after warm-up of the aircraft,” notes Tuan.


Other cold weather challenges, applicable for any aircraft, include ensuring that hatches don’t freeze shut, or that the systems in general don't freeze up – not only the water pipes, oil and hydraulics systems, but also the electrical system, especially batteries. “Batteries don’t hold as much charge or provide as much power output when they are at low temperatures. Meanwhile, oil and hydraulics become very viscous at very low temperatures which makes it hard to move flight control surfaces around and drive pumps etc. So you need to heat the aircraft up and its pipework to be able to operate the aircraft,” explains Tuan.

Human challenges
The challenges behind the cold weather campaign also include human ones,” he notes. “We have maintenance and ground support teams who need to prepare and configure the aircraft, and check everything outside. They need to have the right clothes and equipment compatible with operations outside. But even with those provisions, the wind-chill factor is so strong in Iqaluit that it's difficult. You can only work for a limited time outside, so we have shifts to ensure that nobody stays outside for too long.”


On-site Airbus for its part, had brought a team of more than 30 people. These included: six flight crew – pilots, flight test engineers, and a test-flight engineer; a cabin specialist engineer; a maintenance team – comprising mechanical specialists, electrical specialists, quality inspectors; instrumentation specialists; systems design specialists; technical photographers; as well as an operations colleague to oversee the logistics for the overall journey
The human challenges are not simply on-site in Iqaluit, rather, they begin much earlier. The flight-test engineers will have agreed the test requirements with the design engineers’ office several months in advance, and from that will have prepared the campaign mission plan together with the mission flight-crew and ‘test-flight’ engineer colleagues. Together they determine how they need to configure the aircraft inside and out, when to start taxiing and then take-off, and what the ambient and systems temperature conditions should be etc. They will sequence all the testing and planning of the campaign, and of course, ensure that the whole mission is conducted safely.

Airbus announces large Chinese A320neo-family order




Airbus has announced that it has secured a large order for the A320neo-family from Chinese airlines, which always order in bulk. In total, the manufacturer has sold 292 A320neo-family aircraft to four different Chinese airlines. Air China has ordered 64 aircraft, and also signed-up for 32 for its subsidiairy Shenzhen Airlines. China Eastern has ordered 100 A320neo-family aircraft, while China Southern is ordering 96.

The Chinese airlines will use the additional aircraft to renew the fleet and increase capacity. In a stock exchange filing, China Southern Airlines has mentioned that their new Airbuses will be used to cover for the removal of 100 B737MAXs in their fleet plan and that the airline has decided to scrap the deliveries of these aircraft due to the uncertain delivery timeframes. Deliveries for the new A320neos is to begin in 2024 with 30 aircraft, 40 in 2025, nineteen in 2026 and the final seven in 2027.

Airbus readies large-scale presence at Aero India



Will showcase four aircraft, including flying display by A330neo and demonstration flights by C295
Exhibits will demonstrate Airbus’ commitment to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Startup India’

From flying and static displays of its best-in-class products to showcasing its cutting-edge aerospace services, Airbus has planned one of its biggest-ever participations at Aero India, to be held in Bengaluru from 20 to 24 February, 2019.



Static & flying displays

The centrepiece of the flying displays will be the A330neo – the latest addition to the leading Airbus widebody family featuring advanced materials, new optimised wings, composite Sharklets and highly-efficient engines that together deliver 25% reduced fuel burn and CO2 emissions. Demonstration flights will be performed by the new-generation tactical airlifter C295 which can perform multi-role operations in all weather conditions.

On static display will be Airbus’ most versatile twin-engine rotorcraft – the H135 & H145. The H135 is known for its endurance, compact build, low sound levels, reliability, versatility and cost-competitiveness. The H145 is a member of Airbus’ four-tonne-class twin-engine rotorcraft product range – with designed-in mission capability and flexibility, especially in high and hot operating conditions.

Visitors at the Airbus exhibit – Hall E 2.8 & 2.10 – can witness the company’s continued commitment to supporting the growth of India’s aviation, defence and space sectors, particularly in the areas of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Startup India.’ Aerospace fans can also savour interactive virtual and augmented reality experiences at the Airbus stand.

“Aero India is the jewel in the crown of the world’s largest defence and third-largest commercial aviation market,” said Anand E Stanley, President and Managing Director of Airbus India & South Asia. “Airbus’ large-scale commitment to the show demonstrates that India is more than a market, it’s a core base for us.”

On display will be scale models of the C295 – medium transport aircraft; the A330 MRTT – Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft; the A400M – the most versatile airlifter currently available; the SES-12 – a geostationary communications satellite and a holographic display of the Hybrid SAR Earth observation radar satellite.

In helicopters, scale models of the H225M – the military version of Airbus’ H225 Super helicopter; the AS565 MBe – the all-weather, multi-role force multiplier; along with the H135 and H145 will be on display. Commercial aircraft scale models will include A330-900, the member of Airbus’ A330neo new-generation widebody, the A321neo and ATR 72-600.

Airbus will also demonstrate a wide range of service offerings, including through its fully owned subsidiaries Satair and Navblue, with particular focus and demonstrations of Skywise-based digital services. Also on display will be Airbus’ Advanced Inspection Drone which accelerates and facilitates visual checks, considerably reducing aircraft downtime and increasing the quality of inspection reports.

It is Airbus’ firm belief that technology and talent are the key to unlocking the enormous potential of the region. In India, it has sought to foster innovation and entrepreneurial spirit through Airbus BizLab, which will be present at Hall E 2.9. Visitors will get a first glance of the opportunities that the startup accelerator has created in the Indian innovation ecosystem. Airbus Bizlab will also partner with Invest India to organise the ‘Startup Day’ at Aero India.

Talent acquisition

Airbus will also leverage the event to acquire talent. On February 23 and 24, it will offer members of the public the opportunity to explore career prospects with Airbus India in Avionics Software, Aircraft System Simulation and Airframe Structures as well as in API Development, Full Stack Development, Big Data, Cloud and DevOps.
