FLEET - airBaltic (Latvia) has outlined a revised business plan focused on strengthening its balance sheet, reducing its A220-300 fleet to 36 by 2026 end, and improving profitability.

As part of the plan, the carrier is seeking US$260 million in interim financing, with $260 million of new debt and $115 million of new equity in the longer term. The restructuring also proposes converting a portion of its 2029 Senior Secured Notes into equity.

Since the introduction of Airbus A220-300 into its fleet in 2016, airBaltic has carried more than 24 million passengers on the Airbus A220-300, operated approximately 250 000 flights, and logged over 551 000 flight hours, demonstrating the suitability of this aircraft type for both shorter and longer routes.

At the same time, the aircraft feature a significantly lower noise level and reduced CO₂ and NOx emissions compared to previous generation aircraft, reinforcing their efficiency and environmental performance.

Riga. On December 1, 2025, the Latvian national airline airBaltic welcomed its 51st Airbus A220-300 jet, registered as YL-BTA, in Riga. This is the second aircraft of the type delivered to airBaltic in 2025. Thus far, the airline’s A220-300 fleet has carried more than 23 162 000 passengers, completed nearly 241 000 flights and flown 530 000 block hours.

Since May 2020, airBaltic operates all its flights with a single aircraft type – Airbus A220-300, thus minimizing the complexity and benefiting from the additional efficiency provided by the aircraft.

The Airbus A220-300 has performed beyond the company’s expectations, delivering better overall performance, fuel efficiency and convenience for both passengers and the staff. This aircraft offers an excellent flying experience with such benefits for passengers as wider seats, larger windows, more hand luggage space in the cabin, improved lavatories and much more.

The airline is also gradually equipping its fleet with free high-speed SpaceX Starlink internet, becoming the first European carrier to offer this service.

airBaltic Aircraft Participates in the Latvian Ceremonial Parade

Riga. In honor of the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia, the Latvian national airline airBaltic today participated in the ceremonial parade. The airline performed a special flyover along the 11th November Embankment with its Airbus A220-300 aircraft (registration number YL-CSL), painted in the red-white-red colors of the Latvian flag.

This was the sixth time (previously in 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024) that airBaltic has participated in the national holiday ceremonial parade. The aircraft was flown by experienced and highly qualified Latvian pilots on this honorable occasion.

To capture this flyover from multiple perspectives, airBaltic Content Team were positioned on board the aircraft, at the 11th November Embankment, and in the tower of St. Peter’s Church.

In 2018, as part of Latvia's centenary celebrations, airBaltic presented Latvia with a unique gift – an Airbus A220-300 aircraft in a special red-and-white Latvian flag color scheme. Additionally, in April 2023, the airline received its 40th Airbus A220-300 aircraft, also painted in the colors of the Latvian flag. ROUTES - Air Serbia and airBaltic to expand cooperation agreement on Airbus A220-300 operations

 

Air Serbia and airBaltic announce the expansion of their existing cooperation with the signing of a two-year wet lease agreement. Starting from 1 November 2025, airBaltic will operate flights on behalf of Air Serbia using modern Airbus A220-300 aircraft with a capacity of 148 seats. By introducing airBaltic and next-generation aircraft into its own operations, Air Serbia is further enhancing the passenger experience and continuing the process of strengthening and expanding its route network. During the upcoming winter season, two airBaltic aircraft will be engaged in Air Serbia’s operations, while as many as four aircraft will be in service during the 2026 summer season.

ROUTES - airBaltic Launches New Direct Route from Riga to Faro

Riga. The Latvian national airline airBaltic has today launched a new direct route connecting Riga with Faro, Portugal. The service will be operated once per week, on Saturdays. This addition is part of airBaltic’s expanded winter schedule, which will also include flights from Gran Canaria (Spain) to Ljubljana (Slovenia), starting on October 25, 2025, and from Tallinn (Estonia) to Madeira (Portugal), beginning on October 26, 2025.

Mantas Vrubliauskas, VP Network Management at airBaltic: “We are delighted to add Faro to our network, marking the fourth destination we serve in Portugal alongside Lisbon, Porto, and very soon – Madeira. This new route opens a direct gateway for Latvian travelers to the Algarve – one of Europe’s most attractive leisure regions – while also offering passengers from Portugal convenient access to Riga and beyond. With Faro and our expanded winter schedule, we continue to broaden the variety of leisure options available during the colder months and to strengthen airBaltic’s role as the leading carrier in the Baltics.”

The flight time between Riga and Faro is four hours and 55 minutes.

For the upcoming winter season, airBaltic will increase flight frequencies from all three Baltic capitals to Amsterdam – offering 19 weekly flights from Riga, and 14 weekly flights each from Tallinn and Vilnius (Lithuania), enhancing access to onward destinations through one of Europe’s largest hubs. The airline will significantly expand its presence in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) by launching daily flights from its home base in Riga and doubling service from Vilnius with four weekly flights between the two cities.

Furthermore, airBaltic will extend some of its summer season routes into the winter season, with flights from Riga to Pisa (Italy) and Porto (Portugal) operating through November. Meanwhile, flights from Riga to Catania (Italy) will begin earlier than usual – in March 2026 – providing travelers with even more leisure options. Additionally, the airline will increase its flight frequencies from Riga to Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt) and Hurghada (Egypt), offering three flights per week to each destination. During the upcoming winter season, airBaltic also plans to resume flights between Riga and Dublin (Ireland), operating two weekly flights between the two cities.

Throughout the winter season, airBaltic will also offer an extensive selection of ski destinations, including Innsbruck (Austria), Salzburg (Austria), Geneva (Switzerland), Verona (Italy), and Kittilä (Finland) – covering some of Europe's top skiing resorts.

SPECIAL SCHEME - airBaltic Begins Naming Aircraft After Cities in the Baltic States

Riga. Latvian airline airBaltic has begun naming its Airbus A220-300 fleet after cities across the Baltics, based on the results of a public voting contest held in August 2024. The first three aircraft, featuring special Baltic State liveries, now proudly bear the names of the capital cities – Riga for the Latvian flag livery, Tallinn for the Estonian flag livery, and Vilnius for the Lithuanian flag livery – with registration numbers YL-ABN, YL-CSJ, and YL-CSK, respectively.

The naming contest, held last year to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Way, invited the public to vote for their most beloved cities across Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. A total of over one million votes were cast during the voting period from August 5 to August 22, resulting in a shortlist of 48 cities – 16 from each Baltic country – reflecting the airline’s fleet size at the time of the contest. This initiative celebrates the unity and cultural heritage of the Baltic States. This symbolic meaning also strengthens the recognition of the Baltic States region worldwide and encourages tourism, making these cities attractive to both local and international travellers.

SPECIAL LIVERY - airBaltic unveils 50th Airbus A220-300 with dazzling new livery in Canada

At a special ceremony in Mirabel, Canada, representatives from airBaltic and Airbus gathered for the official unveiling of the carrier’s newest and 50th A220-300.

As the launch customer of the Airbus A220-300 eight years ago, the event celebrating the collaboration between airBaltic and Airbus held a particular significance for those in attendance.

The new aircraft was unveiled on February 4, 2025, complete with a dazzling new livery designed by way of a public competition launched by airBaltic in 2024.

The Airbus A220-300 features an artistic twist on the Latvian flag and portrays a girl soaring through the clouds with long, flowing hair crowned by a traditional wreath.

All three Baltic states, Latvia, Lithuanian and Estonia, are represented within the new livery through a variety of creative elements including a ladybug, a swallow, and a stork.

“More than eight years ago, we became the global launch operator of the Airbus A220-300, which has since become the backbone of our operations. This milestone aircraft represents the completion of our initial order and brings us halfway to our goal of doubling in size and operating a single-type fleet of 100 A220-300s by 2030,” said Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic.

Gauss added: “We are glad to be here with our long-standing partner Airbus and stakeholders to celebrate the reveal of our special milestone aircraft.”

From 840 livery design entries, airBaltic whittled down the best to just three following a vote amongst loyalty program members.

The airline picked from the remaining three and then the final sketch of the design was modified and redesigned by airBaltic to meet the technical requirements of the aircraft.

airBaltic has unveiled its 50th Airbus A220-300, freshly painted at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada. This aircraft features an artistic portrayal of the Latvian flag and unique livery elements representing all three Baltic States – Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. The specially painted A220-300 is set to join the airBaltic fleet in February 2025.

In late 2023, airBaltic launched an exciting design contest, inviting global participation in creating the livery for its milestone 50th Airbus A220-300. A total of 840 entries were submitted, and following voting by over 28 000 airBaltic Club loyalty program members, 21 designs were shortlisted. The top three designs all were acquired by airBaltic and represented national or Baltic region heritage, with the winning design receiving over 30% of the total shortlisted design votes.

This striking livery portrays an artistic depiction of a girl soaring through the clouds with long, flowing hair crowned by a traditional wreath and proudly featuring the Latvian flag. The design also incorporates several other elements that are inspired by the rich heritage and nature of the Baltic region – a ladybug, a swallow, and a stork. The final sketch of the design was modified and redesigned by airBaltic to meet the technical requirements of the aircraft.


The painting of this A220-300 livery was completed over an 18-day period. A total of 21 colors were used to bring this design to life, and for the first time ever, a stencil overlay technique was used to layer colours by the Airbus A220 paintshop teams in Mirabel, Canada.

FLEET - airBaltic places order for 10 additional A220 aircraft bringing airline’s total order to 90

airBaltic confirms an incremental order for an additional 10 A220-300s. This new and fourth reorder will take the airline’s total firm order to 90 A220 aircraft. Already operating a strong fleet of close to 50 A220-300s, airBaltic is currently the largest A220 customer in Europe and the largest A220-300 operator in the world.

The Latvian flag carrier has a long standing history operating the Airbus A220-300, having been the launch customer in 2016. Since 2020, the airline has operated an A220-exclusive fleet. With a firm order for 90 A220-300, airBaltic further reinforces its position as the largest A220 customer in Europe.

Combining state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines, the A220 brings customers a 50% reduced noise footprint when compared to previous generation aircraft and around 40% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. The aircraft offers 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

As at the end of July, Airbus won more than 900 orders from around 30 customers for the A220, of which around 350 have been delivered. The A220 is already in successful service with more than 20 operators worldwide on 1,400+ routes.

Dubai, 13 November 2023 - airBaltic will become the largest A220 customer in Europe after confirming an incremental order for an additional 30 A220-300s. This new order will take the airline’s total firm orderbook to 80 aircraft.
Already operating a 44 strong fleet of A220-300s, airBaltic is currently the largest A220-300 operator in the world.

The airline’s history with the Airbus A220-300 dates back to 2016 where it was the launch customer, and in 2020, it refreshed its fleet to solely operate this aircraft type.

“This day marks a significant milestone in the history of airBaltic – our plans for the first time ever to operate a fleet of 100 aircraft by 2030. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with 100% SAF by 2030.

As at the end of October, Airbus won close to 820 orders from around 30 customers for the A220, of which more than 295 have been delivered, including 50 deliveries so far in 2023. The A220 is already in successful service with 17 airlines worldwide on 1,350+ routes.

SPECIAL LIVERY - Flying the flag: the most eye-catching special flag liveries

On March 11, 2023, airBaltic received its 40th Airbus A220 during a ceremony in Montréal. This aircraft came out of the factory painted in the red and white colors of the Latvian flag.

This aircraft, with registration YL-ABN, will be the second in airBaltic’s fleet sporting the national flag of Latvia, airBaltic’s home country. The first, also an A220, was received in 2018.

airBaltic in the last few days further adjusted planned summer 2020 operation, as the airline schedules service resumption as early as 13MAY20. Latest update sees additional service reduction compared to earlier report on Airlineroute. Upon service resumption, the airline will only operate Airbus A220-300 aircraft, leading to selected routes previously served by Dash8-Q400 only with minimal capacity changes despite frequency reductions.

Airlineroute earlier this month highlighted the airline’s network changes citing July 2020 schedule, resulted in conclusion of service cancellations at Tallinn. Per airline’s full update, certain routes will be resumed by late-August 2020.

airBaltic in the last few days further adjusted planned summer 2020 operation, as the airline schedules service resumption as early as 13MAY20. Latest update sees additional service reduction compared to earlier report on Airlineroute. Upon service resumption, the airline will only operate Airbus A220-300 aircraft, leading to selected routes previously served by Dash8-Q400 only with minimal capacity changes despite frequency reductions.




Airlineroute earlier this month highlighted the airline’s network changes citing July 2020 schedule, resulted in conclusion of service cancellations at Tallinn. Per airline’s full update, certain routes will be resumed by late-August 2020.

Airbus celebrates the 100th A220 aircraft produced

Airbus has celebrated the 100th A220 aircraft produced for a customer during a ceremony at the aircraft programme’s headquarters in Mirabel, Canada. The aircraft, an A220-300, destined for Riga, Latvia-based airBaltic, features a brand new and comfortable cabin layout with 149 seats plus a modernised livery.

The A220 Family is assembled at Airbus’ main Final Assembly Line in Mirabel and more recently, also at the programme’s second assembly line in Mobile, Alabama. The world’s first A220 (formerly called the C Series) was delivered in June 2016 to A220-100 launch operator SWISS.

airBaltic became the A220-300 launch operator when the Latvian airline received delivery of the first ever A220-300 three years ago, on 28 November, 2016. airBaltic has since then re-ordered A220-300 aircraft twice – bringing its firm order to 50 aircraft to become the current biggest European A220 customer. The airline now operates a fleet of 20 A220-300 aircraft.

In an extremely competitive market, the aircraft’s unequalled fuel efficiency and excellent performance has been instrumental to airBaltic which has an all-A220 fleet as the backbone of its new business plan. airBaltic is operating its A220 fleet to various European and Russian destinations as well as to the Middle East. It currently operates the longest flight on an A220 – a 6.5-hour flight from Riga to Abu Dhabi.

Initially designed and delivered as the Bombardier C Series, the A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market; it delivers unbeatable fuel efficiency and widebody passenger comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to offer at least 20 percent lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, along with significantly lower emissions and a reduced noise footprint. The A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft.

Close to 100 A220s are in operation with six operators on four continents. At the end of October 2019, the aircraft had received 530 firm orders from over 20 customers worldwide.
