SCAC and Adria Airways: LOI for 15 SSJ100 and MRO Joint Venture

Minister of industry and trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov said that JSC “Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company” and ADRIA Airways signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for 15 SSJ100.

«The delivery is to be started at the beginning of 2019. They will be handed over under a long-term lease arrangement. In addition, both Parties signed Memorandum of Understanding upon establishing an SSJ100 Maintenance and Repair Organization (MRO) at Ljubljana Airport (Slovenia)».

The JSC «Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company» President Alexander Rubtsov, the CEO of ADRIA Airways Holger Kowarsch and AA Aviation’s Managing Director Dr. Martin Vorderwulbecke indicated that the agreements signed opened a new chapter towards a strategic relationship between the Parties:

He also added that SSJ100 operation would allow to offer more of the current CRJ and Airbus aircraft for ACMI service.

Superjet 100 (SSJ100) is a new-generation Russian commercial jet developed and produced by SCAC. SSJ100 was designed with the latest technologies, ensuring operational efficiency and a high level of passenger comfort. The SSJ100 can be operated on both short and medium distance routes. SCAC manufactures the commercial airliners SSJ100, a version of the Business Jet (SBJ) and special-purpose aircraft. The SSJ100 commercial operation started in 2011.

Slovenia’s Adria Airways – and its German-run owner 4K Invest – have signalled a move towards a possible strategic relationship with Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), by expressing an intention to lease 15 Superjet aircraft whilst also establishing a joint SSJ100 maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business for the type in the central European republic.

The Ljubljana-based carrier, currently an operator of western-built predominantly regional aircraft, has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Sukhoi Civil covering 15 Superjet 100 aircraft. In addition, the parties have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a joint MRO venture for the SSJ100 at Ljubljana Airport, reveals Denis Manturov, the Russian Federation’s minister of industry and trade. Aircraft deliveries will commence as early as “the beginning of 2019, under a long-term lease arrangement,” the minister adds.

SCAC president Alexander Rubtsov, Holger Kowarsch who is chief executive of Adria Airways and Dr Martin Vorderwulbecke, managing director of AA Aviation (a 4K Invest company), have all indicated that the signed papers open a new chapter towards “a strategic relationship between the parties”, a SCAC statement reads. The Slovenian airline, which claims to have been evaluating the Superjet 100 since 2016, believes the Russian-built regional aircraft “will totally support” Adria Airways´ development strategy.

“During the past two years we have been analysing the SSJ100 type and have come to the conclusion that all the technical and operational characteristics of this aircraft would best suit our strategic goals,” says Kowarsch. He also adds that the introduction of the SSJ100s would release more of its Bombardier CRJs and Airbus aircraft for outsourced ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) operations.

Addressing the issue of the SSJ100’s international operator concerns over poor after-sales support and the type’s ‘childhood diseases’, the manufacturer has agreed to set up the MRO joint venture with the Slovenian flag carrier at its base. “We realise that the SSJ100 after-sales support at the entry to the European market must be organised profoundly and professionally. Together with Adria Airways we will create a joint maintenance and repair organisation for the SSJ100 at Ljubljana Airport. That service platform will secure the operational reliability of the SSJ100 aircraft in Europe,” SCAC’s Rubtsov states.

In September, Belgium’s Brussels Airlines announced that it is not extending its Superjet 100 wet lease contract with service provider Ireland-based CityJet, citing ‘challenging maintenance’ issues. Mexican airline Interjet has 22 of the Russian-built jets, with only 12 currently operational.



100 per cent owned by Germany-based private equity firm 4K Invest, Adria Airways currently operates a fleet of 15 jets: three Airbus A319s, three Bombardier CRJ700s and nine CRJ900s, as well as three Saab 200 turboprops.

ADRIA Adds Maribor – London Southend Service June – Sep 2015

Star Alliance member ADRIA from 01JUN15 will launch seasonal operations on Maribor – London Southend route, which sees Airbus A319 aircraft operating 3 weekly flights. This seasonal service operates on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, until 29SEP15.

Adria Airways launched a new service to Amsterdam (AMS), this time from Lodz (LCJ) in Poland on 29 March. The Star Alliance member will serve the 1,001-kilometre sector with six weekly flights, using its 81-seat CRJ 900s. No other carrier operates this link, while Adria Airways already flies to Amsterdam from Ljubljana with thrice-weekly departures.

Slovenia's Adria Airways commences CRJ-700 operations

Adria Airways  will deploy its maiden CRJ-700 into service this week.

The aircraft already flew a first rotation from Ljubljana to Frankfurt on March 29.
According to schedule data, S5-AAZ (cn 10014), on lease from Lufthansa CityLine will be used on flights from Ljubljana to Brussels National, Frankfurt Int'l, Munich, Paris CDG, Podgorica, Prague, Pristina, Sarajevo, Skopje, Tirana, Vienna, Warsaw Chopin, and Zurich.

Slovenia's Adria Airways to start Munich - Bratislava flights

Adria Airways will expand its Munich operations with flights to Bratislava later this summer EX-YU Aviation News reports. The flights will compliment the Slovenian carrier's Munich operations which include Ljubljana, Lodz, and Pristina.

Though still not officially confirmed, it is believed the routes will be operated using a CRJ-700, D-ACPK (cn 10063), on lease from Lufthansa CityLine.

Slovenia's Adria Airways phases out last A320

Adria Airways has completed the phase out of its A320-200 fleet with S5-AAS (cn 444) having now been returned to its lessor. According to EX-YU Aviation News, the twinjet operated its last commercial flight on Tuesday, October 21.

As it stands, the Slovenian national carrier operates two A319-100s and six CRJ-900s. Its two CRJ-200s are scheduled to leave the fleet in early 2015 to be replaced with additional CRJ-900s.

Long-Time Bombardier Customer Adria Airways Orders Two CRJ900 NextGen Aircraft

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - March 27, 2014) - FIDAE 2014 - Bombardier Aerospace announced today that Adria Airways of Ljubljana, Slovenia has signed a firm purchase agreement for two CRJ900 NextGen regional jets. A Star Alliance member with over fifty years of experience in scheduled and charter services, Adria Airways has been a Bombardier customer since March 1997. It currently operates four CRJ200, two CRJ900 and two CRJ900 NextGen regional jets.

Based on the list price for the CRJ900 NextGen aircraft, the order is valued at approximately $92 million US.
