ROUTES / FLEET - Air Canada’s Glowing Hearted Era Begins as First Airbus A321XLR Commercial Flight Takes Off

New Air Canada aircraft to feature Glowing Hearted cabin, including lie-flat seats, a first for a Canadian airline on a single-aisle aircraft
A321XLR is scheduled to make its inaugural international flight on June 15 from Montréal to Toulouse

Air Canada today marked the entry into scheduled service of its first Airbus A321XLR. The 182 passengers onboard AC413 from Montréal to Toronto experienced the start of a whole new chapter in how - and where - Air Canada customers can fly.

“Air Canada is building one of the most capable fleets in the industry. The entry into service of the first Airbus A321XLR marks a transformative moment for Air Canada and the beginning of an exciting new era for our customers, industry partners, and colleagues,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada. “Today, we celebrate an aircraft that will unlock new destinations, improve service on existing markets, and enhance the onboard experience. For our premium customers, the A321XLR will offer the only lie-flat seats on a single-aisle aircraft for a Canadian carrier as it crosses the Atlantic and connects destinations across North America.”

"ADM Aéroports de Montréal is pleased to mark the official launch of the A321XLR departing from YUL Montréal-Trudeau today. This next-generation aircraft is a core part of the development and expansion of Air Canada and YUL," said Yves Beauchamp, ADM's President and CEO. "This modern and versatile aircraft will open up new markets and strengthen Montréal’s international connectivity, in addition to bringing greater flexibility to existing routes."

“We are thrilled to celebrate this historic milestone alongside our long-standing partner Air Canada. As the first airline in Canada to operate the A321XLR, Air Canada is showcasing true leadership in fleet modernization,” said Colin, Bole, Senior Vice President Customers, North America, Airbus. “This aircraft is the perfect tool to support their network growth, seamlessly bridging the gap between short-haul and long-haul operations while delivering a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat and the ability to operate with up to 50% neat Sustainable Aviation Fuel. We are proud to see our next-generation technology support Air Canada’s ambitions and operate on both new and already-existing non-stop transatlantic markets like Montréal to Toulouse in a more sustainable way.”

Air Canada

Air Canada’s new Glowing Hearted cabin standard is making its debut on the A321XLR, offering calm, comfort and connectivity to customers. It features personal device power at every seat, fast, free Wi-Fi for Aeroplan Members sponsored by Bell, next-generation in-flight entertainment screens that are larger and offer Bluetooth connectivity, and thoughtfully curated cabin finishes inspired by the Canadian landscape and aligned to the airline’s brand and commitment to enduring quality.

To the 14 lie-flat seats in Air Canada Signature Class, the A321XLR has 168 Economy class seats, with every seat featuring seatback in-flight entertainment with 4K OLED IFE screens (13-inch in Economy, 19-inch in Signature Class) with Bluetooth audio.

The aircraft will operate several domestic flights prior to its first trans-Atlantic flight between Montréal and Toulouse on June 15.

Air Canada plans to integrate the A321XLR into its schedule progressively to support growth across its network. The aircraft’s performance and range characteristics are well suited to adjust for seasonal demand patterns and evolving market opportunities.

The arrival of the A321XLR is an important milestone and the latest step in Air Canada’s multi-year fleet modernization program, which is focused on customer experience, operational resilience and fuel efficiency improvements versus older-generation aircraft. It reflects the airline’s commitment to prudent growth, continuous product investment, and disciplined execution of Air Canada’s business plan. In addition to 30 A321XLRs (15 will be leased, 15 are being acquired directly from Airbus S.A.S) that are expected to enter the fleet over the coming years, Air Canada has announced orders for 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners as well as eight A350-1000s. It also continues to take deliveries of the Canadian-built Airbus A220, with 21 aircraft remaining on its firm order of 65. Five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft have already been delivered in 2026.

FLEET - Airbus delivers first A321XLR for Air Canada

The first of 30 Airbus A321XLRs for Canada’s flag carrier Air Canada, has been delivered. The aircraft is on lease from SMBC Aviation Capital. The delivery marks a significant milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal strategy, enabling the carrier to bridge the gap between its narrowbody short-haul and widebody long-haul operations.

The delivery makes Air Canada the first operator of the A321XLR in Canada. The aircraft will play a pivotal role in the airline’s network expansion, operational efficiency gains on new and existing long-haul routes, as well as providing additional range and economics required to serve secondary markets with non-stop connectivity.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, Air Canada’s A321XLR features a sophisticated two-cabin layout designed for maximum comfort on transcontinental and transatlantic flights. The premium cabin has 14 Air Canada Signature Class full-flat seats in a 1-1 configuration, offering every passenger direct aisle access, while there are 168 Economy cabin seats. Passengers will experience the Airspace interior design, which boasts the latest in-flight entertainment with Bluetooth audio, full in-seat connectivity, and XL overhead bins providing 60% more storage space. Additionally, an advanced ambient lighting system enhances the overall travel experience to help mitigate jetlag.

The A321XLR is the next evolutionary step of the A320neo Family, responding to market needs for more range and payload, creating even more value for the airlines. It delivers an unprecedented Xtra Long Range of up to 4,700nm and 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared with previous generation competitor aircraft, as well as reduced NOx emissions and noise. The range allows for Air Canada to operate non-stop transatlantic flights from Montreal and Toronto to destinations such as Berlin, Toulouse and Edinburgh. At the end of March  2026, Airbus had secured over 500 orders for the type.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A321XLR is able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030.

Air Canada currently operates a fleet of 136 Airbus aircraft and has 61 aircraft on order, including recently ordered A350 aircraft.

Air Canada today announced the first of its updated Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft has entered service at Air Canada Rouge, introducing the industry’s best leisure carrier experience. This marks the latest milestone in Rouge’s comprehensive cabin renewal program, focused on delivering a more comfortable, connected, and consistent onboard experience.

This fleet transition will allow most customers flying Rouge leisure and sun routes across North America and the Caribbean to enjoy upgraded interiors, including personal seatback entertainment, reclining seats and complimentary Fast, Free Wi-Fi sponsored by Bell.

“When customers step onto our aircraft, they should instantly feel a sense of comfort, care, and pride,” said Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at Air Canada. “Supported by award-winning service from co-workers across the company, this renewal program is about delivering that feeling consistently, across every flight. To support this leisure-focused growth, Air Canada has opened a new Rouge crew base in Vancouver, coinciding with the entry into service of the first Rouge Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This investment directly supports more sun and leisure flying from Western Canada, such as the recently announced return of winter service from Calgary to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

Bringing More Comfort to Air Canada Rouge

Customers flying Rouge will enjoy free wine, beer – including non-alcoholic beer - and Canadian-made premium snacks on all North American and Caribbean flights. The in-flight menus showcase beloved Canadian brands, for an elevated in-flight experience tailored to a range of tastes, including Canadian favourites like MadeGood Morning Bars (on flights before 10 a.m.), TWIGZ pretzels, and Leclerc Célébration cookies.

The cabins are configured to give customers a choice of 12 Business Class seats, 18 Preferred seats offering extra space, and 147 Standard Economy seats.

Modernizing the North American Fleet

The transformation extends across the entire network. Upgrades to the customer experience also extend to regional travel, with Air Canada Express aircraft operated by Jazz to be fitted with new cabins and next generation Fast, Free Wi-Fi.

Upcoming Additions to the Fleet

As part of its ongoing fleet modernization program, Air Canada recently announced an order for eight Airbus A350-1000s. This is in addition to the 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners expected to start entering service later this year. Air Canada is also set to welcome in the coming months the first of its 30 Airbus A321XLRs, while continuing to take deliveries of the Canadian-built Airbus A220, with 23 aircraft remaining on its firm order of 65.

These aircraft will enter service with Air Canada’s next generation cabin design and standards, including improved connectivity and in-flight entertainment offerings.

Toulouse, France, 12 February 2026 – Air Canada has disclosed a firm order for eight Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, marking a pivotal upgrade to the airline’s long-haul fleet strategy with an additional commitment to Airbus widebody aircraft. The order was listed as undisclosed in November 2025.

With an industry-leading range of up to 9,000nm, the latest generation widebody aircraft will be central to the airline’s global expansion, enabling seamless, non-stop connectivity from Canada to high-growth markets across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

Designed for ultra-long-haul comfort, the aircraft features the Airspace cabin, representing the next evolution of Air Canada’s award-winning passenger experience. Travelers will benefit from the lowest altitude and noise levels of any aircraft cabin to support passenger wellbeing on the longest flights.

The A350 includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort. Its latest generation Rolls-Royce engines and use of lightweight materials bring a 25 per cent reduced fuel burn and emissions advantage, compared to previous generation competitor aircraft.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A350 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030. At the end of January 2026, the A350 Family had won over 1,500 orders from 67 customers worldwide.

ROUTES / FLEET - Going Global - New Destinations Take Flight as Air Canada Expands Network for Summer 2026

New Montréal – Catania, Italy
New Montréal – Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Return of Toronto–Shanghai; Toronto–Budapest
Extension of Vancouver–Bangkok to year-round

MONTRÉAL, September 10, 2025 - Air Canada today announced its international network for Summer 2026 with new destinations taking flight in Europe and Asia. Beginning next year, the airline will launch new routes from Montréal to Catania in Sicily, Italy and, as unveiled yesterday, to Palma de Mallorca, Spain. From Toronto, Air Canada re-establishes non-stop flights to Shanghai and Budapest, and increases flights to Prague. Air Canada’s popular seasonal Vancouver-Bangkok route will now become year-round, strengthening the airline’s position as the only North American carrier offering direct, non-stop service to the Thai capital.

“Air Canada’s continued international expansion reflects our bold ambitions, and leverages our network reach and scale to capitalize on global travel demand driven by leisure travel trends, growing demand for services to Asia, and cargo development opportunities. Next summer, we will be launching exciting, new services to Sicily and Mallorca from our Montréal trans-Atlantic hub. Air Canada is the first Canadian carrier to offer customers non-stop flights to these sought after Mediterranean destinations, and the only airline operating scheduled service from Canada to Sicily and Mallorca,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, and President, Cargo at Air Canada.

“From Toronto, we are further cementing our global hub with the launch of two celebrated, international routes linking Canada’s largest metropolitan area directly to Shanghai and Budapest, and adding capacity to Prague. Our seasonal Bangkok services from our Vancouver trans-Pacific hub become year-round, solidifying our position as the only airline with non-stop, continual service to Thailand from the North American continent. In all, these strategic additions reinforce Air Canada’s global network as one of the most wide-reaching from North America, connecting our customers to all six inhabited continents,” concluded Mr. Galardo.

"Canadians will enjoy more travel options, greater convenience, and stronger connections to Europe and Asia with Air Canada’s new destinations in 2026. These expanded routes mean easier access to the places people want to go—whether for business, leisure, or to visit family. And as more passengers take flight, they promote trade and tourism, supporting jobs across the country, and helping us grow a stronger Canadian economy,” said the Honourable Chrystia Freeland , Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.

“Air Canada’s expanded network is more than new destinations—it’s a gateway to stronger trade, investment, and people-to-people ties. Most of Canada’s air cargo travels in the belly of passenger planes, so when we expand passenger routes, we’re also expanding trade routes—moving Canadian goods faster, farther, and more reliably. These new connections to Europe and Asia give Canadian businesses better access to key markets, strengthen our global competitiveness, and build on what was already a record year for Canadian air cargo. Stronger connectivity in the skies means stronger growth on the ground, and ensures Canada remains a leader in the global economy,” said the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, Government of Canada.
