Boeing, Alaska Airlines Announce Order for Five Next-Generation 737-900ERs

All-Boeing carrier invests in its fleet and improved fuel performance

SEATTLE, Sept. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK) today announced an order for five additional Next-Generation 737-900ERs (Extended Range). The order, valued at $481 million at list prices, continues Alaska Airlines' investment in its fleet and efforts to improve fuel performance.

"Today's announcement supports our goal of growing Alaska Airlines by 4 to 8 percent a year," said Mark Eliasen, Alaska Air Group's vice president of finance and treasurer. "The 737-900ER is a great aircraft, with the cost efficiency and reliability needed for us to be successful in today's competitive marketplace."

"The order of five additional 737-900ERs is an affirmation of our hometown partner's successful strategy of offering customers good value, delivering a great onboard experience and running an on-time airline," said Brad McMullen, vice president of North America Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 737-900ER offers Alaska Airlines the best seat-mile cost of any single-aisle airplane in production, which is especially important with today's high fuel prices. The interior also complements Alaska's excellent customer service, providing the passengers with a wonderful flying experience."

The largest and newest model in the Next-Generation 737 family, the 737-900ER can carry up to 26 more passengers or fly about 500 nautical miles (926 km) farther than the 737-900. Alaska Airlines operates the 737-900ER in a two-class configuration with 181 seats and features the Boeing Sky Interior.

The Boeing Sky Interior is the latest in a series of enhancements for both airlines and passengers that introduces new lighting and a curving architecture that create a distinctive entry way. Passengers enjoy a more open cabin feel and an environment simulated by light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. The interior also features sculpted sidewalls and newly improved and expanded pivot bins. In addition, all of Alaska's seats will feature outlets providing dual 110-volt and USB power.

The longer range of the 737-900ER can connect distant city pairs across continents, such as Seattle to Orlando, Fla., in a generous two-class configuration. It has substantial economic advantages over competing models, including 6 percent lower operating costs per trip and 4 percent lower operating costs per seat mile.

With today's order, Alaska Airlines now has unfilled orders for 35 737-900ERs and 37 737 MAX airplanes.

Air New Zealand unveils 'distinctive' new look

Air new Zealand

Air New Zealand is putting the silver fern on its aircraft on an all black or black and white colour scheme.

The airline has unveiled the new look this afternoon which will be painted on to its 103 aircraft starting later this year and take 18 months to roll out across the fleet. The koru stays where it is on the tail but airline's historic teal colour will disappear.

Chief executive Christopher Luxon said the livery design involved extensive consumer testing including focus groups both in New Zealand and overseas.

Air New Zealand has an agreement to use the Government-owned New Zealand Way Fern Mark which was approved by 78 per cent of those surveyed.

"The new-look livery is distinctive and iconic and we believe will inspire a sense of pride in New Zealanders," said Luxon.

The majority of the airline's fleet will eventually feature the white version of the new livery and a limited number will feature the distinctive black version of the new design, including the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, due for delivery next year.

Airbus’ newest A330 version: “The right aircraft, right now” for domestic and regional operations

The newly-unveiled A330-300 domestic/regional version benefits from Airbus’ continued investments in the most efficient mid-size widebody jetliner operating today, providing a highly reliable, cost-effective and modern aircraft for growing passenger markets such as China and India.

Its increased capacity of 356-400 seats – combined with a lower operational weight, optimised thrust engines, a latest-technology cockpit and tailored passenger cabin – will provide the new A330-300 with unit costs similar to Airbus’ single-aisle A321.

In matching the A330-300 to shorter-range operations, its cabin will incorporate modern lightweight slim-line economy seats (weighing just over half that of typical long-haul seats), galleys optimised for food service on domestic/regional routes (with the capacity for one meal, plus a snack for travel times of two/three hours), and the elimination of crew rest areas utilised on long-distance flights.

The cockpit integrates Airbus’ latest technology from the A350 XWB and A380, further facilitating the A330-300’s operations in high-frequency service. Features earmarked for the domestic/regional version include dual head-up displays (which meet upcoming requirements from civil aviation authorities) and protection from runway overrun situations during landing.

Airbus’ development of the latest A330 version builds on this jetliner’s already successful deployment on short/medium-range routes around the world, including in China – where A330s already operate a significant number of domestic services.

Overall, Airbus has sold more than 1,250 A330s in passenger, freighter, VIP and multi-role variants, with the production rate at its highest level ever – confirming this jetliner’s tagline as: “The right aircraft, right now.”

Singapore Airlines Prepares for Arrival of SilkAir Boeing 737

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has revealed the first Next-Generation Boeing 737-800 of its partner carrier, SilkAir, will provisionally enter passenger operation on February 20, 2014 between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and Penang. The information was detailed following the latest update of the carrier’s GDS flight inventory which shows the 737-800s operating to six international markets during the first quarter of 2014.

SilkAir, the regional wing of SIA, is currently an exclusive Airbus operator but it agreed terms with Boeing in August last year to rollover and expand its existing fleet with up to 68 new aircraft from the US manufacturer, including its new MAX version of the 737. The deal, formalised in November 2012 included firm orders for 54 aircraft (23 737-800s and 31 737 MAX 8s) and purchase rights for an additional 14, with flexibility to switch to other variants within the B737 product range.

SilkAir will end this year with 24 Airbus A320 Family aircraft – a mix of A319s and A320s – so the Boeing deal not only allows it to renew its fleet but provides scope for future network growth. At the time of the commitment Boeing confirmed that deliveries were due to begin in 2014 and continue to 2021 and it appears that the first aircraft will arrive at Singaporean carrier as early as late January or early February next year.

According to SIA’s GDS listing the SilkAir 737-800s will debut on the Singapore – Kuala Lumpur and Singapore – Penang routes from February 20, 2014 as well as the Singapore – Phuket link from February 21, 2014. As additional aircraft arrive the type will subsequently debut on the Singapore – Siem Reap – Da Nang and Singapore – Da Nang – Siem Reap routes from March 17, 2014 and March 18, 2014, respectively and then on Singapore – Kochi from March 20, 2014.
