FLEET - Edelweiss withdraws first Airbus A340-300 from service
Edelweiss transferred its first Airbus A340-300, registered HB-JMG, to long-term storage in Teruel on October 13. The aircraft exited commercial service the previous week.
The move comes as part of Edelweiss’ ongoing fleet renewal strategy. The airline is transitioning to newer, more fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900 models to reduce costs and enhance operational efficiency.
Edelweiss currently operates three A350-900s, with the first having entered service in March. Three more A350-900s are scheduled to join the fleet, enabling further phase-out of older widebodies.

HB-JMG joined Edelweiss in October 2016, after previously operating for SWISS, which took delivery of the aircraft new from Airbus in 2003. The airframe’s withdrawal marks the start of the airline’s planned retirement of its remaining four A340-300s.
The A340-300s are configured with 27 business class and 287 economy seats. In comparison, the A350-900s offer 30 business and 309 economy seats, reflecting a capacity increase and modernized cabin experience.

The A350-900’s twin-engine design provides improved fuel efficiency over the four-engined A340-300, aligning with industry trends toward more sustainable operations. Edelweiss expects to complete the transition as additional A350s are delivered.

ORDER - Edelweiss to Receive Its First Airbus A320neo in 2026
Edelweiss announced on Tuesday the expansion of its short-haul fleet to a total of 16 aircraft. This growth is being realized through the addition of two aircraft from Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS).
An Airbus A320 (registration HB-JLQ) will be integrated in October 2025, followed by the first Airbus A320neo (registration HB-JDB) in April 2026.
The arrival of the A320neo positions Edelweiss on a path toward modernization and efficiency. This aircraft is the successor to the classic Airbus A320 and is equipped with technology that reduces fuel consumption by at least 15% compared to its predecessor.

Furthermore, the model significantly decreases emissions and noise levels. This not only improves its environmental footprint but also opens the door to more versatile use on longer-range routes.
Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer emphasized the importance of this step: “I am delighted that Edelweiss continues to develop its short- and medium-haul route network and that we are taking a key step toward modernizing our fleet with our first Airbus A320neo. The aircraft combines state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly technology with greater comfort for our passengers.”
With this expansion, Edelweiss strengthens its position at its Zurich hub and ensures sustainable growth, aligning with the global aviation trend toward efficiency and emission reduction.

FLEET - Edelweiss welcomes first Airbus A350 in Zurich
Hundreds of aviation fans followed the arrival live on the ground
The Airbus A350 is one of the most advanced long-haul aircraft in the world
Today was a historic day for all aviation fans and for Swiss aviation: the first Airbus A350 with Swiss registration arrived at Zurich Airport this afternoon. The aircraft, with the registration HB-IHF, had previously taken off from Lourdes Airport (LDE).
During its landing approach, the modern long-haul aircraft provided an additional goosebump moment: after a planned go-around manoeuvre, the Airbus A350 made a celebratory lap of the airport before finally touching down safely on runway 16 at 3:13 p.m.
The aircraft taxied down the runway accompanied by follow-me vehicles and was greeted with a water salute from the fire engines of the Zurich Protection & Rescue service. The Airbus A350 then headed for its parking position B38. More than 100 employees and the Edelweiss management team were already waiting there to give the newest member of the fleet and its flight crew a fitting welcome.
Huge interest from aviation enthusiasts
Hundreds of spectators, plane spotters and aviation fans gathered at Zurich Airport today to witness this historic moment up close. Hours before the scheduled arrival, many were already securing the best places to watch the spectacle up close. Particularly popular were viewing terrace B, the car parks with an ideal view of the runway, and the numerous spotting points around the airport. Equipped with cameras, binoculars and full of anticipation, the fans eagerly awaited the long-awaited landing.
Airbus A350: an environmentally friendly and economical aircraft
The Airbus A350 sets new standards in efficiency with the latest technologies and outstanding aerodynamics. The aircraft is considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly long-haul aircraft in the world. The latest generation of engines and the use of lightweight materials make the twin-engine Airbus A350-900 one of the most fuel-efficient wide-body aircraft. It consumes 25 per cent less fuel and thus produces 25 per cent less CO2 than the four-engine Airbus A340 it replaces. In addition, noise emissions are up to 50 per cent lower.Edelweiss is procuring a total of six highly efficient and low-emission Airbus A350-900 aircraft. By mid-2027, the five existing long-haul Airbus A340-300 aircraft will be replaced and Edelweiss' long-haul fleet will be expanded back to its pre-coronavirus level of six aircraft.

FLEET - Edelweiss Air to add six A350-900s
Edelweiss Air (WK, Zurich) has confirmed that it will replace its existing fleet of five A340-300s with six A350-900s. Deliveries will begin in the Summer 2025 season with the entire fleet rollover expected to conclude by the end of 2026.
The airline said the initial four aircraft will be ex-LATAM Airlines Brasil (JJ, Sao Paulo Congonhas) units and will be delivered in the Brazilian carrier's configuration albeit with "slight modifications to the cabin and Edelweiss design" due to supply chain issues affecting the global MRO sector. They will seat up to 339 passengers with 30 business class, 63 economy plus, and 246 economy class seats. The Swiss leisure specialist, a subsidiary of Swiss (LX, Zurich), plans to eventually reconfigure the aircraft to its own specifications but did not provide any dates.
The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows the aircraft will be N285BN (msn 35), N286BN (msn 45), N287BN (msn 79), and N264AR (msn 363). All four are currently stored at Victorville, following the retirement of the type by LATAM Airlines Group, and are owned by Deucalion Aviation Funds.
"The other two aircraft were also originally ordered by LATAM Airlines. They will be in service with another operator until the transfer to the Lufthansa Group. For this reason, the MSNs will only be announced at a later date," the airline told ch-aviation.
LATAM Airlines Brasil operated thirteen A350-900s, but the other nine aircraft have already been taken over by Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson).
According to the ch-aviation fleets history module, the airline operated up to six widebody aircraft between 2018 and 2021 which, at that time, comprised four A340-300s and two A330-300s. Edelweiss Air retired the A330s during the COVID-19 pandemic, transferring them to fellow leisure specialist EW Discover (Frankfurt International). Besides the A340s, the airline continues to operate thirteen A320-200s.
The airline said it would deploy the A350s on existing routes but eventually plans to use their superior range to launch new services from Switzerland.
