NEW AIRCRAFT - Bulgaria Air takes delivery of its first A220

 

Bulgaria Air, flag carrier airline of Bulgaria, has taken delivery of its first A220, on lease from Air Lease Corporation (ALC) (NYSE: AL), from the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada. The A220 will be flying on both regional and international routes across Europe. Bulgaria Air will lease a total of five A220-300s and two A220-100 from ALC.

The A220 is the latest-generation aircraft type from Airbus to join Bulgaria Air’s fleet. The airline already operates seven A320 aircraft demonstrating the fleet complementarity between the A220 and the A320 Family. With a range of up to 3,450 nm (6,390 km), the A220 provides airlines such as Bulgaria Air with increased operational flexibility.

Bulgaria Air’s first A220 configuration will comprise a total of 143 seats in dual-class, including eight Business class seats. The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation engines. The aircraft offers unbeatable comfort in a small single-aisle with the widest windows, largest seats and overhead stowage, as well as the widest and quietest cabin in its category.

The A220 supports Bulgaria Air’s engagement towards the aviation decarbonisation journey

as it delivers up to 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. In addition, the aircraft noise footprint is reduced by 50% compared to previous-generation aircraft.

As of the end of May 2023, Airbus has received close to 800 orders from 30 customers for the A220, of which 265 have been delivered. The A220 is already in successful service with 16 airlines worldwide. To date, more than 90 million passengers have enjoyed the A220. The fleet is currently flying on over 1,100 routes and over 375 destinations worldwide.

Bulgaria Air launched two services from its Sofia (SOF) base between 28 and 30 April, starting on the former date with a connection to Lisbon (LIS).

The 2,757-kilometre sector will be served by the carrier weekly (Thursdays) onboard the airline’s A320 fleet. The second launch on the latter date was to Alicante (ALC), a 2,704-kilometre sector which will also be served weekly (Saturdays) onboard a mixture of the airline’s A319 and E190 fleets according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. Although services to Lisbon will face no incumbent carrier, flights to Alicante will compete with Wizz Air which operates twice-weekly services.

FIRST EMBRAER 190 JOINS BULGARIA AIR FLEET

Embraer and Bulgaria Air celebrate the first delivery of four EMBRAER 190s, today, in a ceremony at the airline’s headquarters in Bulgaria‘s capital city, Sofia. The remaining three aircraft will be delivered by the end of this year.

The airline’s E190s are the Advanced Range (AR) version with a nominal range of 2,400 nautical miles (4,448 kilometers). Each aircraft is configured in dual-class layout with eight Business Class seats and 100 Slimline seats in Economy Class.

Welcoming the Bulgarian airline to the portfolio of E-Jet customers, Paulo Cesar Silva, Embraer President, Commercial Aviation, stated: “Bulgaria Air is the 22nd E-Jet operator in Europe and the CIS region. Like so many other Embraer customers, I’m confident the Bulgarian flagship airline will begin seeing real economic benefits and hearing highly positive passenger comments as soon as this airplane enters revenue service.”

“We’ll be flying the EMBRAER 190s in parallel with our larger narrow body fleet to open new markets and supplement frequency in existing ones. The AR version will give us the range we need to access cities from Sofia that have market volumes that are ideal for the E190,” commented Yank Georgyev, Bulgaria Air’s CEO.

Like European majors British Airways, Air France-KLM, Lufthansa or Alitalia, Bulgaria Air joins a growing list of customers operating E-Jets, specifically in Northern and Eastern Europe, where airlines have identified E-Jets as the preferred platform to replace their ageing aircraft and simplify their fleets. Ten airlines – Bulgaria Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Finnair, Estonian Air, Air Moldova, Montenegro Airlines, Belavia, Dniproavia, Aerosvit, and Air Astana – have ordered, or are currently flying, Embraer E-Jets.
