Bombardier Kicks Off Q400 NextGen Airliner Demonstration Flights in the Latin American Region at FIDAE Air Show in Chile

Bombardier Aerospace’s technologically advanced Q400 NextGen airliner will start a series of demonstration flights in Chile and Peru around the 2012 FIDAE airshow where the aircraft will be on static display in Santiago, Chile. The air show is the largest in Latin America and runs from March 27 to April 1.

The Q400 NextGen aircraft, which features a custom “Get More” livery that reflects its outstanding performance, economics, passenger comfort and environmental consciousness, will also travel to Peru after the air show.

“The demonstration flights will provide many opportunities to showcase our Q400 NextGen aircraft to potential customers who are eager to experience the airliner first-hand,” said Kevin Smith, Vice President, Americas Sales, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The Q400 NextGen aircraft’s fuel efficiency, operational flexibility, low-cost operation, reduced environmental impact and onboard passenger experience, position it as an outstanding solution for regional air transport in Latin America.

“In addition, the Q400 NextGen aircraft’s high rate of climb, single-engine service ceiling and optional drop-down oxygen system are important factors that contribute to its suitability for Chile and other mountainous regions,” added Mr. Smith.

Latin America is experiencing robust economic growth that is projected to continue with the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics being held in Brazil. These major international sporting events are spurring regional growth, including investment in secondary aviation infrastructure, and the development of low-fare carriers, providing wider access to affordable air travel.

Some low-fare carriers have started utilizing smaller regional jet and turboprop aircraft to access secondary or tertiary markets. Starting from a base of nearly 1,000 commercial aircraft located in the region currently, Bombardier’s 20-year commercial aviation market forecast projects deliveries of 1,000 units in the 20- to 149-seat category to Latin America and the Caribbean (including Mexico) through 2030. More than 60 per cent of the deliveries are expected to be in the 100- to 149-seat segment, while most of the remainder will be in the 60- to 99-seat segment, according to the forecast. Currently, more than 60 Bombardier Dash 8/Q-Series turboprops and CRJ regional jets are in service in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Bombardier has booked firm orders for 428 Q400 and Q400 NextGen airliners. The delivered aircraft are in service with approximately 40 operators in 30 countries, on six continents. These aircraft have transported more than 177 million passengers and have logged more than 3.2 million flight hours and over 3.5 million take-offs and landings

Boeing Celebrates Delivery of Japan Airlines’ first two 787 Dreamliners

EVERETT, Wash., March 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) today celebrated the delivery of the airline's first two 787 Dreamliners. JAL is the first airline to take delivery of a 787 powered by fuel-efficient General Electric GEnx engines.

"Today is an important moment in our 60-year relationship with Japan Airlines as we celebrate the deliveries of not one, but two Dreamliners," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 787 will provide the fuel-efficient airplane needed to serve Japan Airlines' growing international operations."

The 787 Dreamliner is more efficient to operate and has lower fuel use compared with today's similarly sized airplanes because of use of light weight composites and advancements in systems, engines and aerodynamics.

"JAL will be the first airline to start new routes that have never been flown before by taking full advantage of the efficiencies of this aircraft, starting with Boston service next month and San Diego later this year," said Yoshiharu Ueki, president of Japan Airlines. "The 787 with GEnx engines has the performance economics that JAL is looking for to ensure route profitability, and also the enhanced in-flight comfort that our customers will be delighted with."

Japan Airlines ceremonially took possession of the 787 Dreamliner at a celebration with Japanese Taiko drummers and a dramatic airplane unveiling earlier this morning. Guests from Boeing, Japan Airlines and General Electric attended.

"GE is proud that its GEnx-1B engines will power JAL's Boeing's 787 Dreamliner," said Chuck Nugent, vice president and general manager of the GEnx program at GE Aviation. "The GEnx engine combines advanced technology and material to offer improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and less noise to benefit our operators."
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an all-new airplane featuring a host of technologies that provide exceptional value to airlines and unparalleled levels of comfort to passengers. It is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes, enabling airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public

Porter Airlines to Conduct Canada's First Biofuel-Powered Revenue Flight

In mid-April, Porter Airlines plans to use one of its Bombardier Q400 turboprop airliners to conduct the first biofuel-powered revenue flight in Canada. On February 9, 2012, in preparation for Porter’s upcoming flight, a Bombardier Q400 turboprop test aircraft became the first aircraft in Canada to fly on the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D7566 bio-derived jet fuel, which was recently certified.

“We are timing our biofuel-powered flight close to Earth Day to emphasize the contribution that biofuels are expected to make in helping the aviation industry meet its targeted reduction in emissions,” said Robert Deluce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Porter Airlines. “Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft are already among the ‘greenest’ aircraft in the world and the use of biofuel will make the aircraft even more environmentally conscious.”

Porter’s biofuel-powered revenue flight will utilize a 50/50 blend of biofuel with Jet A1 fuel. The biofuel portion is derived from the oilseed crop, Camelina sativa* (49 per cent) and Brassica carinata* (one per cent).

“The two-hour preparatory flight was flawless and the bio-derived fuel performed as expected,” said Mike Arcamone, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “During the flight, the Q400 aircraft successfully undertook several maneuvers including engine-out climbs, rapid engine accelerations and cruising to verify the performance of the aircraft while using the bio-derived fuel.”

Other key partners in the biofuel program, which was first announced in 2010, include Saskatchewan-based Targeted Growth Canada (TGC), the producer of the crop of Camelina sativa and Pratt & Whitney Canada, the manufacturer of the PW150A engines that power the Q400 aircraft. Funding for the program is being provided by the partners as well as by the Green Aviation Research & Development Network (GARDN).

Further details regarding Porter’s biofuel-powered revenue flight will be released in the coming weeks.

Atlantic Airways takes delivery of its new Airbus A319

Aircraft to boost travel to and from Faroe Islands
Atlantic Airways, the national carrier of the Faroe Islands has taken delivery of its Airbus A319 as part of its plan to increase its capacity, becoming Airbus’ newest operator, equipped with CFM engines.
The aircraft is configured in a single economy class layout with 144 seats. All passengers will benefit from state-of-art mood lighting and drop-down screens throughout the cabin. It will be deployed on route from Faroe Islands to Copenhagen, Denmark.
The aircraft will operate at Vágar Airport, which is known for having poor visibility due to extreme weather conditions. To ease approach procedures into Vágar Airport, Atlantic Airways has chosen Quovadis for flight operations consultancy services to design the first European Required Navigation Performance - Authorisation Required (RNP-AR) procedures. RNP-AR represents the most modern navigation technique, allowing the aircraft to fly precisely along a predefined route using on-board navigation systems and the GPS-based ‘Global Navigation Satellite System’ (GNSS).
Magni Arge, Chief Executive of Atlantic Airways, said: “We selected the A319 as our future platform having evaluated various alternatives. To provide us with optimal performance and range we have chosen the most powerful CFM engines for the aircraft. This one aircraft contract, even if small in size will have a significant input on our islands’ tourism and trade. We are proud to present Atlantic Airways` brand-new Airbus A319 on the occasion of its 24th birthday”.
"We are pleased to welcome Atlantic Airways as a new Airbus operator," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, Airbus. “We congratulate Atlantic Airways on this first Airbus aircraft delivery and we are confident the airline will benefit from the proven reliability, outstanding and unbeatable low operating costs the industry’s best-selling single aisle product line offers."

FIRST EMBRAER 190 JOINS BULGARIA AIR FLEET

Embraer and Bulgaria Air celebrate the first delivery of four EMBRAER 190s, today, in a ceremony at the airline’s headquarters in Bulgaria‘s capital city, Sofia. The remaining three aircraft will be delivered by the end of this year.

The airline’s E190s are the Advanced Range (AR) version with a nominal range of 2,400 nautical miles (4,448 kilometers). Each aircraft is configured in dual-class layout with eight Business Class seats and 100 Slimline seats in Economy Class.

Welcoming the Bulgarian airline to the portfolio of E-Jet customers, Paulo Cesar Silva, Embraer President, Commercial Aviation, stated: “Bulgaria Air is the 22nd E-Jet operator in Europe and the CIS region. Like so many other Embraer customers, I’m confident the Bulgarian flagship airline will begin seeing real economic benefits and hearing highly positive passenger comments as soon as this airplane enters revenue service.”

“We’ll be flying the EMBRAER 190s in parallel with our larger narrow body fleet to open new markets and supplement frequency in existing ones. The AR version will give us the range we need to access cities from Sofia that have market volumes that are ideal for the E190,” commented Yank Georgyev, Bulgaria Air’s CEO.

Like European majors British Airways, Air France-KLM, Lufthansa or Alitalia, Bulgaria Air joins a growing list of customers operating E-Jets, specifically in Northern and Eastern Europe, where airlines have identified E-Jets as the preferred platform to replace their ageing aircraft and simplify their fleets. Ten airlines – Bulgaria Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Finnair, Estonian Air, Air Moldova, Montenegro Airlines, Belavia, Dniproavia, Aerosvit, and Air Astana – have ordered, or are currently flying, Embraer E-Jets.
