Etihad Airways and TAP Air Portugal enter into codeshare agreement

Etihad Airways and TAP Air Portugal have agreed a strategic codeshare agreement, which will come into operation from December 5, 2023, enabling passengers of both airlines to enjoy greater connectivity across a range of destinations within their respective networks.
The agreement allows passengers to streamline their travel by making a single booking with a single check-in process at the beginning and the added convenience of having their baggage transferred seamlessly to their final destination.
This partnership will provide Etihad’s customers with easy one-stop access to a variety of destinations across the TAP network. These include iconic cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil, as well as San Francisco and Miami in the USA.

“This partnership offers our customers convenient access to 26 of TAP’s fantastic leisure and business destinations. Equally, it expands the options available to TAP customers traveling from Europe to Abu Dhabi, offering them the opportunity to explore the welcoming hospitality and rich culture of our home, and connect seamlessly to a selection of our destinations in the GCC and the Seychelles,” commented Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue Officer.
“The codeshare agreement between TAP Air Portugal and Etihad adds diversity and quality to the travel experience that both airlines offer their customers, said TAP Chief Revenue Officer Mario Cruz.
The agreement follows the start of Etihad’s non-stop services to Lisbon earlier this year and enables both Etihad and TAP customers to connect to each other’s network through Frankfurt and London Heathrow

TAP Air Portugal pursues fleet cuts amid COVID-19 downturn

TAP Air Portugal (TP, Lisbon) says it expects to continue reducing the size of its fleet during the remainder of 2020 as it grapples with low travel demand brought on by COVID-19-related travel restrictions.

In its 1Q20 trading report, the majority state-owned carrier said six aircraft (one A321-200, one A320-200, three A319-100s, and one E190) would be retired as their leases expire through the end of 2020 with no replacement capacity planned. In addition to these, further aircraft exits are being considered to better match the fleet with current and anticipated demand.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, TAP operates seventeen A319-100s, nineteen A320-200s, seven A320-200neos, four A321-200s, six A321-200Ns, seven A321-200NX(LR)s, seven A330-200s, and nineteen A330-900s. Its Portugália Airlines (NI, Lisbon) subsidiary operates nine ERJ 190-100LRs and four ERJ 190-200ARs.

TAP posted a 1Q20 net loss of EUR395 million (USD443 million) driven by events related to the COVID-19 pandemic, namely a jet fuel overhedge of EUR150.3 million (USD169 million), with net income also impacted by negative net currency exchange differences of EUR100.5 million (USD112.92 million).
