Airbus announces large Chinese A320neo-family order

Airbus has announced that it has secured a large order for the A320neo-family from Chinese airlines, which always order in bulk. In total, the manufacturer has sold 292 A320neo-family aircraft to four different Chinese airlines. Air China has ordered 64 aircraft, and also signed-up for 32 for its subsidiairy Shenzhen Airlines. China Eastern has ordered 100 A320neo-family aircraft, while China Southern is ordering 96.

The Chinese airlines will use the additional aircraft to renew the fleet and increase capacity. In a stock exchange filing, China Southern Airlines has mentioned that their new Airbuses will be used to cover for the removal of 100 B737MAXs in their fleet plan and that the airline has decided to scrap the deliveries of these aircraft due to the uncertain delivery timeframes. Deliveries for the new A320neos is to begin in 2024 with 30 aircraft, 40 in 2025, nineteen in 2026 and the final seven in 2027.

1st passenger A319neos delivered

 The first two passenger A319neo aircraft have been delivered. B-328A (10239) and B-328C (10288) were both delivered to China Southern Airlines and ferried from Hamburg-Finkenwerder to China. Both aircraft are equipped with CFM LEAP -1A engines and have a passenger cabin with 132 economy seats and four business seats. Airbus has already delivered four A319neo Corporate Jets.

The A319neo is the slowest selling variant of the Airbus A320neo-family. As of mid-February 2022, Airbus has only sold 63 pax versions of the A319neo and eight A319neo Corporate Jets. The two aircraft delivered today, are the only A319neos China Southern Airlines has ordered. Other airlines which have ordered the pax version of the A319neo are Spirit Airlines (31 aircraft on order) and Air Cote d’Ivoire (Two aircraft on order). 28 A319neos have been ordered by “unannounced commercial operators”

First A319neo flight with 100% sustainable aviation fuel

Airbus, Dassault Aviation, ONERA, the French Ministry of Transports and Safran have launched the first in-flight study of a single-aisle aircraft running on unblended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

During the flight test over the Toulouse region on 28 October, one CFM LEAP-1A engine of an Airbus A319neo test aircraft operated on 100% SAF. Initial results from the ground and flight tests are expected in 2022.

The unblended SAF is provided by Total Energies. It is made from Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA), which primarily consists of used cooking oil, as well as other waste fats. HEFA is made of paraffinic hydrocarbons and is free of aromatics and sulfur. Approximately 57 tonnes of SAF will be used for the entire test campaign. It is produced in Normandy close to Le Havre, France. The 100% SAF will also be utilised for compatibility and engine operability studies on the Safran Helicopters Arrano engine used on the Airbus Helicopters H160, which are expected to start in 2022.

Airbus, in collaboration with DLR, is responsible for characterising and analysing the impact of 100% SAF on ground and in-flight emissions. Safran focuses on compatibility studies related to the fuel system and engine adaptation for commercial and helicopter aircraft and their optimisation for various types of 100% SAF fuels. Safran will perform LEAP engine ground tests with 100% SAF at its Villaroche facilities later this year to complete analysis. ONERA is supporting Airbus and Safran in analysing the compatibility of the fuel with aircraft systems and will be in charge of preparing, analysing and interpreting test results for the impact of 100% SAF on emissions and contrail formation. Dassault Aviation is contributing to the material and equipment compatibility studies and verifying 100% SAF biocontamination susceptibility.

The study – known as VOLCAN (VOL avec Carburants Alternatifs Nouveaux) – contributes to global decarbonisation efforts currently underway across the entire aeronautical industry, and is benefiting from a financing of the France Relance recovery plan, the part thereof dedicated to the decarbonisation of aviation, which is implemented by DGAC under the supervision of Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, French Minister of Transports. The study’s ultimate goal is to promote the large-scale deployment and use of SAF, and certification of 100% SAF for use in single-aisle commercial aircraft and the new generation of business jets.

And now there are three! The A319neo performs its first flight

The third member of Airbus’ best-selling A320neo Family – the A319neo – has gone airborne, performing its maiden flight today. After taking off from Hamburg-Finkenwerder Airport in Germany (which is one of four final assembly line sites worldwide for the single-aisle jetliner family), the aircraft touched down five hours later at Airbus’ Toulouse, France headquarters location. This shortest-fuselage member of the A320neo product line is equipped with CFM International LEAP-1A engines – one of the two powerplants available on the NEO jetliners.

Once in airline service, the A319neo will provide the same remarkable fuel efficiency as the longer-fuselage A320neo and A321neo versions, enabling airlines to choose between three aircraft sizes accommodating from 100 to 240 seats – depending on the specific passenger cabin layout. The choice allows carriers to match capacity with demand, covering the entire single-aisle jetliner segment from low- and high-density domestic operations to longer-range routes.
The A319neo’s flight campaign will focus primarily on aircraft handling qualities, autopilot, performance and systems – building on the required engine tests that already have been performed with the A320neo and A321neo versions.

Third member of successful A320neo Family starts flight test campaign

The first Airbus A319neo performed its maiden flight today, The smallest member of the A320neo Family, powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines took off from Hamburg and landed in Toulouse after a 5 hour flight.
It was piloted by Experimental test pilots Michel Gagneux and Eckard Hausser. They were assisted in the cockpit by Test-Flight Engineer Jean Michel Pin, while two flight test engineers Sylvie Loisel-Labaste and David O’nions directed the flight from the aircraft’s Test Engineer station.

This flight was the occasion for the crew to assess the general handling of the aircraft and to check the main systems. The A319neo, registered as D-AVWA, will be based in Toulouse in order to complete its flight test programme.

The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with over 5,000 orders received from over 90 customers, capturing almost 60 percent share of the market. The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020.
