With JetBlue’s First Airbus A321neo Delivery Nearing, Airline Announces First New Route Made Possible by Aircraft’s Extended Range and Increased Fuel-Efficiency

First JetBlue A321neo Set to Arrive Soon Featuring 20% Increase in Fuel Efficiency

New Route between New York-JFK and South America Advances International Presence and Further Grows Network Relevance in Northeast Focus City

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) today announced that delivery of the airline’s first Airbus A321neo (new engine option) aircraft is set for this spring with entry into service this summer. The A321neo will make it possible for JetBlue to operate a new, nonstop route between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Guayaquil, Ecuador’s José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE). (a)

The new nonstop flight between the Northeast and South America will be made possible by the A321neo’s extended range and fuel efficiency. JetBlue’s growth in its existing Ecuador market advances the airline’s leadership position in Latin America and the Caribbean where it serves nearly 40 destinations.

“The introduction of the A321neo to our fleet opens up a world of new possibilities as we think about the future of our growing network, building out our focus cities, and offering new and unique nonstop routes to our customers,” said Andrea Lusso, director route planning, JetBlue. “At the same time we are ensuring we deliver the best the best travel experience to customers and meet our long-term financial targets as we grow into the future.”

New Flying Opportunities with Comfort and Connectivity

The A321neo – the newest aircraft type to join JetBlue’s growing fleet of more than 250 aircraft – boasts a 20% increase in fuel efficiency which results in an extended range of some 500 nautical miles. The extended flying capabilities of the A321neo opens up a host of new markets which JetBlue’s existing fleet could not serve with nonstop flights. Additionally, each JetBlue Airbus A321neo will be powered by two Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, which produce a smaller noise footprint and lower operating costs when compared with today's engines.

Inside the aircraft, JetBlue’s award-winning comfort and connectivity will be the focus of the onboard customer experience. The A321neo will feature the Collins Meridian seat -- which is the widest seat available for the single aisle Airbus family of aircraft – with enhanced cushion comfort, adjustable headrests, power connections at every seat and the most legroom in coach (b). Inflight entertainment will be powered by Thales AVANT and ViaSat-2 connectivity. With this system – featuring 10.1 inch, 1080P high definition screens, more than 100 channels of live television with DVR-like pause and rewind functionality, picture-in-picture function and more – JetBlue will offer customers expanded entertainment choices in nearly every region the airline flies (c). JetBlue is the only major U.S. airline with seatback entertainment screens at every seat on every aircraft.

Expanding Service in Ecuador

JetBlue will launch new service between New York-JFK and Guayaquil starting December 5, 2019, pending government approval. Flights will operate daily and the new route will become the longest in the JetBlue network, stretching beyond today’s longest route by more than 200 nautical miles. Today, the existing New York-Guayaquil market suffers from high fares and limited connecting flight choices. JetBlue aims to bring affordable fares to the market while also offering the only nonstop service by a major U.S. airline between the two cities. JetBlue will announce details of when seats will go on sale soon.

Schedule between New York (JFK) and Guayaquil (GYE)

Beginning December 5, 2019
JFK - GYE Flight #1769
GYE - JFK Flight #1770  2:00 p.m. – 9:04 p.m. 10:55 p.m. – 5:13 a.m. (+1)

Home to more than two million people, Guayaquil is buzzing with colorful cityscapes, outdoor gardens and zoos. The city is also a convenient gateway to the natural beauty of the Galapagos Islands. With quick and easy flight access from Guayaquil, travelers can get up close and personal with wildlife while surrounded by unique landscapes unlike anywhere else in the world.

“On behalf of the Government of Ecuador, and through the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works, we are dedicating efforts to improve the connectivity of our country,” said Aurelio Hidalgo, Minister of Transport and Public Works, Ecuador. “JetBlue’s official announcement of its new direct route between New York and Guayaquil by the end of 2019, is the result of this work. We are pleased to receive them, and we wish them success, which will undoubtedly be our success.”

JetBlue has already seen success in Ecuador. The airline first launched daily service between Fort Lauderdale and Quito in 2016 and will add a second daily seasonal flight on the route this summer. Existing service between Fort Lauderdale and Guayaquil launched February 2019.

a) Subject to receipt of government operating authority.

(b) JetBlue offers the most legroom in coach based on average fleet-wide seat pitch for U.S. airlines.

(c) Fly-Fi and live television are available on all JetBlue-operated flights. On ViaSat-2 equipped aircraft, Fly-Fi will not be available on portions of some routes, and live television will not be available while operating outside of the contiguous U.S., or until the aircraft returns to the coverage area. On all other aircraft Fly-Fi and live television will not be available while operating outside of the contiguous U.S., or until the aircraft returns to the coverage area.

ATR congratulates Silver Airways on first new ATR 42-600 flight in the US

Toulouse, 23 April 2019 – Silver Airways yesterday launched its regularly scheduled flights aboard its new ATR -600 series aircraft. The first flight departed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 10:40 a.m. and arrived at Key West International Airport at 11:55 am (EST).

Silver Airways, America’s leading independent regional airline, is reinventing the regional flying sector by being the first U.S. carrier to operate the technologically advanced, customer friendly ATR -600 series aircraft. Silver Airways has taken delivery of three new ATR 42-600 aircraft from NAC. The aircraft is specifically designed for short-haul markets, but with the same look, feel and customer amenities of larger jetliners. Yesterday marked the first time revenue passengers have flown on an ATR -600 operated by a U.S carrier.

The new aircraft are allowing Silver to expand its service in the Southeastern United States, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. By initially introducing the mission-specific ATR 42-600 aircraft, with seating for 46, Silver now has the unique ability to offer quicker direct flights to even more short and medium-haul leisure and business destinations in both domestic and nearby international markets.

“This is truly a great day for Silver Airways, ATR, Nordic Aviation Capital and our customers that would not have been possible without the hundreds of dedicated men and women of Silver Airways and Seaborne Airlines who have worked tirelessly over the past year to arrive at this historic moment,” said Silver Airways and Seaborne Airlines CEO Steve Rossum. “The new ATR -600 series aircraft will be transformational for Silver Airways and is ideal for our short-haul domestic and nearby international operations. The state-of-the art aircraft allows for a safe, highly reliable and efficient fleet operation and a superior overall experience for our guests.”

“We are proud to see the ATR -600 aircraft take flight in the U.S. and to introduce the most modern standards of passenger experience and regional aircraft with our valued partner Silver Airways,” said ATR Chief Executive Officer Stefano Bortoli. “We are grateful to our friends at Silver for being our U.S. launch customer; leading what we expect to be a new wave of eco-responsible and passenger-friendly regional travel and the return of the ATRs in the U.S.”

“Nordic Aviation Capital is proud of its relationship with Silver Airways, and we are particularly pleased to be part of their great success story,” said Martin Moller, Chairman of Nordic Aviation Capital. “The introduction of the ATR -600 series represents an essential milestone for them. We congratulate Silver Airways on their service expansion and look forward to continuing our outstanding relationship with them for many years to come.”

Silver Airways has taken delivery of three of up to 50 new ATR -600 series aircraft, including an initial order for 20 ATR -600 aircraft split among the 46-seat ATR 42s and the 70-seat ATR 72s. As the world’s leading regional flying aircraft, the new ATRs will provide Silver’s passengers unparalleled experience and reliability and pilots the industry’s most advanced cockpit.

Silver intends to take delivery and begin operating five more ATR 42-600s in 2019, and subject to regulatory approval, the airline is planning to take delivery of at least three ATR 72-600s this year. All of the initial 20 aircraft are expected to be in service by 2020.

Kazakhstan start-up FlyArystan takes delivery of its first A320

The six-year-old aircraft, with tail number P4-KBB, was previously operated by Air Astana (FlyArystan)
Kazakhstan start-up FlyArystan, the country’s first low-cost carrier (LCC), has taken delivery of its first Airbus A320 at an April 23 presentation at its Almaty airport base.

The six-year-old aircraft, with tail number P4-KBB, was previously operated by the LCC’s parent company Air Astana, and was flown to Almaty on April 20 from Mineralnye Vody in Russia where it had undergone scheduled maintenance at the facility of MRO specialist S7 Technics.

In addition to the scheduled maintenance, S7 Technics also reconfigured the aircraft’s cabin to accommodate 180 seats in a full economy layout, offering new Recaro slim seats with leather upholstery and a 70-82-cm seat pitch.

The low-fare airline will start scheduled flights on May 1, 2019, with an initial route network to include flights from Almaty to the cities of Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), Taraz, Uralsk and Karaganda. Later, the list of routes will be added to with flights from Almaty to Shymkent and Pavlodar. At the first stage, the carrier’s fleet will consist of four Airbus A320s but, by 2022, it plans to increase the fleet size to 15 aircraft.

FlyArystan was created in November 2018 at the behest of Kazakhstan’s then president Nursultan Nazarbayev. Initially, the LCC will use the parent airline’s Air Operator’s Certificate, but is to apply for its own in the future.

Nordavia is rebranded as Smartavia

Nordavia turned Smartavia promises to revolutionise its service through new technologies (Nordavia)

In a long awaited move, Russia’s privately owned Nordavia-Regional Airlines has officially launched its re-branded image, with the airline changing its name to Smartavia to emphasise its commitment to revolutionising its service through new technologies.

The gradual rebranding process will occur throughout 2019, with the first aircraft sporting the airline’s new livery scheduled for early April, but the changes are not limited to a new name, a different livery and upgraded cabin crew uniforms. Smartavia is implementing new technologies to create “a conceptually new system of e-commerce,” insists Sergey Savostin, the airline’s general director. Among other things, the plan includes new passenger service standards, a new fares structure, a native website and a mobile app. The new brand will target “active people with a pronounced desire for self-development, and family audience,” he adds.

Smartavia is positioning itself as an airline that is “comfortable to interact with smartphones,” says a statement. The re-branded carrier’s business model will retain that of Nordavia by remaining a “classic legacy airline” focusing on regular and charter services inside and outside Russia.

Headquartered at Arkhangelsk in the northwest of Russia, the airline “respects the history and success of the original Nordavia,” but notes that its new ambitions are not reflected by the old name. Also, apart from Nordavia, there are two other airlines in Russia – Nordwind and Nordstar – whose names are directly associated with the north.

Smartavia’s new colour scheme will be radically different from that of Nordavia, which resembled Aeroflot in a tribute to the times when the regional airline was a subsidiary called Aeroflot Nord. The aircraft fuselage will retain its basic silver background colour but with the addition of purple and coral. The creators of the new brand, DuckDesign, reveal that a pair of paper airplanes was chosen as the symbol of the airline, signifying the convenient turnaround of flights with people flying where they want to and then returning to where they belong. In addition, a compass arrow points at the company’s desire to serve its passengers’ needs.

As well as the re-branding project, in the period from April to July of this year, Smartavia is to take delivery of six aircraft: five Boeing 737-800s and a single B737-700. These aircraft will all feature the new livery, and some of the existing fleet will also be repainted, Savostin says. As a result of fleet expansion, the company expects to almost double its traffic levels from last year’s 1.19 million to 2.2 million passengers in 2019.

The airline is counting on strengthening its presence at St Petersburg and Moscow. It is currently coordinating its route network expansions with the main focus on providing direct services between Russian cities, particularly in the northern region with destinations in the south of the country. Passengers will be offered more connection options, it says.

Nordavia Airlines currently operates a fleet of 11 Boeing 737s from its base airports at Arkhangelsk, St Petersburg and Moscow to more than 50 destinations in Russia and beyond.

Meanwhile, the prospect of the privately owned Nordavia merging with state-controlled Red Wings Airlines, an initiative announced in 2017, is no longer on the agenda, Evgeny Klyucharev, Red Wings’ general director has confirmed. However, the two carriers will continue with their ‘alliance’ cooperation. “Shareholders from both sides realise that consolidation is vital, particularly in the current market environment. So our airlines will continue working in an alliance,” adds Klyucharev, who attended the partner airline’s re-branding ceremony.

Airbus launches “Skywise Health Monitoring” with U.S. airline Allegiant Air as early adopter

Enabling the real-time management of aircraft events and troubleshooting
Allowing prioritisation and tracking
Increasing dispatch reliability

Airbus has launched first operations of a new Skywise service – Skywise Health Monitoring (SHM) – with Allegiant Air on its A320s. Dynamically coupled with Skywise Reliability Services (SRS) and Skywise Predictive Maintenance (SPM), SHM is hosted on Skywise, gathering live diagnostic feeds from the aircraft through its ACARS* link to the airline’s information system.

Using the power of the Skywise aviation data platform, SHM collates and centralises the alerts, flight-deck effects, maintenance messages etc., prioritises them, correlates any faults with the relevant troubleshooting procedures, highlights operational impacts, provides the maintenance history of the system (from the logbook and MIS** information collected through Skywise Core and stored in the data lake), allowing effective tracking of the alerts.

When fully deployed, and following the in-service feedback from Allegiant Air and other “early adopters,” SHM will support airlines’ Maintenance Control Centers, Line Maintenance and Engineering departments in identifying, prioritising, analysing and handling in-service events, enabling quicker decision-making and preparation of the optimal solution to ensure aircraft on-time dispatch and minimising AOG risks.

Overall, SHM saves airlines time and decreases the cost of unscheduled maintenance. Natively interfaced with SPM and SRS to provide an integrated user experience, and also ready to harness the new on-board Flight Operations and Maintenance Exchanger (“FOMAX”) data router which can capture over 20,000 real-time aircraft parameters, SHM enables end-to-end unscheduled event management/fixes, for example by anticipating tools and parts’ availability closest to the aircraft. More early adopters will join in the months to come to pilot SHM for other Airbus aircraft, including the A330, A350 and A380.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation, and Tourism (MLITT) has issued Type Certification for the Airbus A350 XWB, enabling the A350 XWB first customer from the country Japan Airlines to operate the aircraft. The Type Certification covers the aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

Airbus Japan President Stephane Ginoux said: “Receiving the A350 XWB Type Certification from the Japanese authority is a great achievement. We are very pleased that Japan Airlines will soon join other world class carriers flying the world’s most modern widebody aircraft.”

JAL placed an order for 31 A350 XWBs (18 A350-900s and 13 A350-1000s) in 2013. It was JAL’s first ever order for Airbus aircraft.

The carrier’s first A350-900 is scheduled for delivery in the middle of the year. JAL’s A350 XWB fleet will enter service on major domestic routes starting with its Haneda-Fukuoka route from September, replacing older-generation widebody types.

The A350 XWB is the world’s most modern and eco-efficient aircraft family shaping the future of air travel. It is the long-range leader in the large widebody market (300 to 400+ seats). The A350 XWB offers by design unrivalled operational flexibility and efficiency for all market segments up to ultra-long haul (15,000 km). It features the latest aerodynamic design, carbon fibre fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines. Together, these latest technologies translate into unrivalled levels of operational efficiency, with a 25% reduction in fuel burn and emissions. The A350 XWB’s Airspace by Airbus cabin is the quietest of any twin-aisle and offers passengers and crews the most modern in-flight products for the most comfortable flying experience.

At the end of March 2019, the A350 XWB Family had received 890 firm orders from 50 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.

jetBlue to launch TATL ops in 2021

jetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) has announced it will launch transatlantic flights from New York JFK and Boston to London in 2021 using A321-200neo(LR) aircraft.

The carrier said it will fly "multiple times daily" from both American airports. It is still evaluating which London airport to serve.

jetBlue said it will convert thirteen of its eighty-five A321-200neo on firm order from Airbus into the LR variant, "with the ability to convert more".

The American carrier has been mulling over the decision to launch transatlantic flights for some time.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, there are currently 55 weekly flights between Boston and London. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Delta Air Lines operated from London Heathrow, while Norwegian UK flies from London Gatwick. There are also 217 weekly flights between London and New York, with British Airways serving New York JFK from Heathrow, Gatwick, and London City (via Shannon on the outbound leg) and New York Newark from Heathrow, Virgin Atlantic serving JFK and Newark from Heathrow, United Airlines - Newark from Heathrow, Delta and American Airlines - JFK from Heathrow, and Norwegian UK - JFK from Gatwick.

In anticipation of jetBlue's planned market entry, earlier this month, Virgin and Delta have announced plans for new Gatwick to Boston and JFK routes to be launched in 2021 as well.

Iraqi Airways eyes widebody fleet renewal, US ops

Iraqi Airways (IA, Baghdad) is planning to renew its widebody fleet and is considering either B777s or A330neo for this purpose, Assistant Director General (Commercial Affairs) Sana Al-Khayyat said.

Al-Khayyat told Arabian Aerospace in late 2018 that the carrier was planning to retire all its Boeing widebodies in 2019, subject to government approval of the plan.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, the Iraqi carrier's widebody fleet currently includes two B747-400s, one B777-200LR, and one A330-200. The airline recently decided that it will retire its two B767-300(ER)s due to the excessive cost it would take to return the units to active service.

The Iraqi carrier is looking at expanding its network to the United States and Bangladesh.

Iraqi Airways is also hoping to be removed from the EU blacklist and secure EASA Third Country Operator (TCO) authorisation within the first half of 2019, which would allow it to operate to the European Union. Currently, all Iraqi Airways flights to Europe are operated under its code and with its aircraft but using the Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) of AtlasGlobal (KK, Istanbul New).

ANA Takes Delivery of Airline’s First Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner

All Nippon Airways becomes the first Asian airline to operate every Dreamliner airplane model Delivery bolsters the world’s largest in-service 787 fleet to 67

Charleston, S.C., April 4, 2019 – Boeing [NYSE:BA] delivered the first of three 787-10 airplanes to ANA (All Nippon Airways), the original launch customer of the 787 Dreamliner. With this milestone delivery, ANA becomes the first airline in Asia to operate the entire Dreamliner family.

As a stretch of the popular 787-9, the 787-10 carries a total of 330 seats in a standard two-class configuration, adding about 40 more passengers, while setting new benchmarks for fuel efficiency and operating economics with 25 percent better fuel per seat.

“Over the past several years, the Boeing 787 has formed the backbone of our world-class fleet and today we are excited to introduce the latest member of the Dreamliner family, the 787-10,” said Shinya Katanozaka, President and CEO of ANA HOLDINGS Inc. “The added capacity of the 787-10 provides our passengers with the most innovative and memorable flying experience, while also delivering the lowest operating cost per seat and tremendous efficiency overall.”

The market-leading fuel efficiency of the 787 has enabled ANA and more than 50 other airlines to open at least 210 new non-stop routes around the world. With over 800 Dreamliners in service around the world, the 787 has helped airlines save 35 billion pounds of fuel since its launch in 2011.

This delivery marks the 67th Dreamliner to join ANA’s fleet of 36 787-8s and 30 787-9s, the largest 787 fleet in the world. The SKYTRAX rated five-star airline plans to operate the new super-efficient 787-10 on its popular Tokyo-Singapore route.

“ANA is one of the most respected and globally-renowned airlines in the industry, and we are honored to partner with them on yet another 787 milestone. We continue to support them as they move forward with their plan to operate one of the youngest, and most efficient widebody fleets in the world, which now includes the entire 787 family and will soon include the new 777X,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing for The Boeing Company.

In addition to being the launch customer for the 787, ANA was one of the first airlines in Asia to sign up for the 787 Landing Gear Exchange program. The program provides customers with reliable, Boeing-certified landing gear exchanges when and where they are needed, greatly reducing maintenance time and returning airplanes to service in a timely manner.

Like its sister variants, the 787-10 is built with strong, lightweight composites and is equipped with advanced systems and a suite of innovative cabin features including the largest windows of any jet, soothing LED lighting and comfortable cabin air that is cleaner and more humid.

Level to fly from Amsterdam to seven European destinations

Level (Austria) (Anisec) has announced it is coming to Amsterdam as its second hub after Vienna. The brand will start flying from AMS to Rome and Vienna starting on April 6.

Service to London (Luton) will begin operating on April 7 followed by Fuerteventura and Lisbon in June.

Barcelona and Milan (Malpensa) will be added in August.
Three Airbus aircraft will be based at AMS.

American Airlines launches A321neo service with new cabin, larger overhead luggage bins

American Airlines is starting scheduled flights with the first of its 100 new Airbus A321neo aircraft on order. These aircraft come equipped with an all-new cabin interior designed for enhanced passenger comfort and convenience, including larger Airspace XL overhead luggage bins that increase carry-on bag capacity.

American is the launch customer for the Airspace XL bins, which provide approximately 40 percent more overhead storage space for passengers on board the 196-seat aircraft. In addition to equipping its new A321neos with the XL bins, American also plans to retrofit its entire in-service fleet of earlier A321 models – more than 200 aircraft – with the cabin features included on the new A321neos.

Ingo Wuggetzer, Airbus’ Vice President of Cabin Marketing said: “We are very pleased that American Airlines’ first A321neos with the Airspace XL bins are now entering service. We constantly work with airline customers to improve our aircraft cabins, and American in particular played an instrumental role with us in developing our biggest and best overhead bins to date.”

The Airspace XL bins accommodate larger luggage – up 24” x 16” x 10” – allowing standard roll-on bags to be loaded on their sides instead of being inserted flat. This creates room for up to four bags in each bin instead of the current three. The larger bins will significantly reduce the number of passenger bags checked at the gate, and sent to the cargo hold.

American‘s selected cabin layout allows the airline greater flexibility in seating arrangements and use of cabin space. The two class cabin will gain an additional row of first-class seats, bringing the total to 20. Outfitting the A321neo with a free wireless inflight-entertainment (IFE) system allows passengers to select a wide-range of options from their own devices. LED mood lighting will enhance the cabin environment.

Powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines and ETOPS certified for lengthy over water flights, the A321neo will allow American to carry larger loads on its longer, more densely travelled routes such as Los Angeles and Phoenix to Orlando, or West Coast hubs to Hawaii.

The A321neo is the largest member of the A320 Family, seating up to 240 passengers, depending on cabin configuration. Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances, and cabin innovations, the A321neo offers a reduction in fuel consumption of at least 15 percent per seat from day one and 20 percent by 2020 as well as a 50 percent noise reduction.

Palau Asia Pacific Air to launch Taiwan-Saipan flights

Palau Asia Pacific Air (Koror) will launch charter flights between Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands and Taipei Taoyuan in June 2019, Taiwan News has reported.

The service will mark the resumption of direct air connectivity between Taiwan and Saipan after a 12-year gap. Flights will operate three times every two weeks.

Palau Asia Pacific Air is a virtual carrier, a successor to the bankrupt Palau Pacific Airways (ED, Koror). It currently charters a single A320-200 from Cambodia's Sky Angkor Airlines (ZA, Phnom Penh), XU-718 (msn 1595), to run flights from Koror to Hong Kong Int'l and Macau Int'l. The airline said it will also use an A320 for the Saipan-Taipei route.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, Saipan currently sees scheduled services to South Korea, Guam Int'l, Hong Kong, and mainland China.

New faces of Virgin Atlantic

We’re saying farewell to our Flying Lady and welcoming five new “Flying Icons” to adorn our brand new Airbus A350-1000 fleet. The high flyers are a diverse range of men and women representing modern Britain, rolled out on four brand new aircraft this year, followed by a further eight by 2021.

Our use of the Flying Lady was inspired by figureheads that have decorated ships since the 16th century. The artwork was based on the pin up girls made famous by Alberto Vargas in the 1930s and 1940s.
