SPECIAL COLOURS - Brussels Airlines unveils its newest Belgian Icon

Tintin discovers new horizons, this time in space

© Brussels Airlines / Hergé / Tintinimaginatio 2026

Brussels, February 12, 2026 - Brussels Airlines proudly presents its latest Belgian Icon, a tribute to one of Belgium’s most internationally cherished creations: Tintin. The airline revealed its freshly painted aircraft (A320 – OO‑SNJ), inspired by Hergé’s universe and the famous adventures on the Moon and in space. It is the second Tintin‑themed aircraft in the Belgian Icons collection. The aircraft’s inaugural commercial flight is scheduled for February 13 to Milan Linate.

The new design was developed in close collaboration with Tintinimaginatio, who explored several creative directions. The Moon and space theme quickly emerged as the strongest choice as it is instantly recognizable, emotionally powerful, and visually striking. Its connection to aviation through flight, altitude, and exploration made it a natural fit, while its clean aesthetic ensured a refined and balanced livery. The final concept features Tintin’s characters in weightlessness, creating a light and dynamic visual effect across the fuselage.
“After the incredible success of the first Tintin plane - Rackham - Brussels Airlines decided to continue with the adventure. And we accepted their proposition without any hesitation. We actually see this as the first step towards celebrating the 100th Anniversary of TINTIN on the 10th January 2029.”
- Nick Rodwell, CEO, Tintinimaginatio
“Comic art is an essential part of Belgium’s cultural identity, and Hergé’s work continues to inspire people around the world. It is no coincidence that ‘Rackham’ was our very first Belgian Icon. With this new aircraft, we deepen that legacy and strengthen our mission to showcase Belgian creativity around the world. We are proud to bring another iconic piece of Belgian culture into the skies and to offer our passengers a unique experience.
- Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO, Brussels Airlines
A tribute to Hergé’s universe
The two sides of the aircraft are different, which makes it possible to feature several characters (Tintin and the Moon on one side, Snowy and Captain Haddock on the other) without overloading the visual design of the livery. The cherry under the cake is the moon-rocket on the belly of the aircraft, which will take off, fly, and land “for real”. The background of the livery is a gradient going from midnight blue to black.

Inside the cabin, the Belgian Icon experience continues, where the lunar atmosphere is extended through various design elements. The overhead compartments tell a story with a sequence of visuals following one another like comic-book panels: the rocket taking off from Earth, the risk of encountering an asteroid… All of it framed by Hergé’s handwritten quote: « A force de croire en ses rêves, l’Homme en fait une réalité » (“By believing in his dreams long enough, Man turns them into reality”1).
Passengers will also encounter Snowy and Tintin again as well as Thomson and Thompson on the bulkheads and the digitally printed floor carpet by Lantal Textiles is a subtle reference to outer space.
The painting of the aircraft was carried out entirely by Airbourne Colors, a long‑standing and trusted partner of Brussels Airlines.

The aircraft’s inaugural commercial flight is scheduled for February 13, departing Brussels Airport for Milan Linate at 10:25am.

About the Belgian Icons
As with every Belgian Icon, the new aircraft embodies the airline’s ambition to bring a little piece of Belgium in the air and sharing the best of the country with the world.

Brussels Airlines introduced its very first Belgian Icon, Rackham (OO‑SNB), in 2015. More than a decade later, Rackham remains one of the most photographed aircraft in the world and will continue flying in the airline’s fleet until 2027.
With OO‑SNJ, Brussels Airlines expands its homage to Tintin, adding a second aircraft celebrating the timeless universe created by Hergé.

In November 2022, the new version of Trident - the aircraft dedicated to the Belgian Red Devils and Red Flames, the Belgian male and female national football teams - was presented. In April 2024, the second edition of Amare was revealed, which is a collaboration with the world-famous music festival Tomorrowland. Atomium, the fourth Belgian Icon, was unveiled in March 2025.

Previous Belgian Icons include:

Magritte, part of the fleet between 2016 and 2021, paying homage to René Magritte, the Belgian surrealistic painter.
Aerosmurf, which smurfed the fleet between 2018 and 2023, created following a design contest organized by Brussels Airlines.
Bruegel, celebrating Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder, which traveled the world between 2019 and 2023.

SPECIAL LIVERY - Brussels Airlines unveils "Atomium": the newest Belgian Icon and brings yet another little piece of Belgium in the air. March 26, 2025

Brussels, March 26, 2025 - Brussels Airlines, in proud collaboration with the Atomium, is thrilled to introduce its newest Belgian Icon dedicated to the renowned landmark. After a contest launched in August last year, the winning design of architect Thomas Faes (Faes Architecture) was brought to life. The “Atomium” celebrates the nation's spirit of creativity, innovation, and pride.

The OO-SNM (Airbus 320), arrived in Brussels early this morning from the painting facility and is set to embark on its first flight to Prague tomorrow.

At a special event held in Brussels Airlines’ Maintenance & Engineering hangar, media, guests, and employees gathered to witness the grand reveal. "Atomium" pays tribute to one of Belgium’s most recognized symbols.

The "Atomium" proudly joins the prestigious lineup of Belgian Icons, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to showcasing local heritage worldwide and bringing little pieces of Belgium in the air.

From contest to soaring reality
Last August, Brussels Airlines launched a contest, inviting Belgians and residents to submit designs capturing the essence of the country. The response was impressive with over 900 creative entries highlighting Belgium’s diverse heritage: from cycling and Art Nouveau to comic book characters and, of course, the Atomium. After a rigorous selection process, 15 finalists were chosen, and a public vote of over 50,000 participants narrowed them down to the top five.
A distinguished jury - including singer Sandra Kim, musician Alex Callier, artist Philippe Geluck, and designer Gabrielle Szwarcenberg - ultimately selected the Atomium design by Belgian architect Thomas Faes (Faes Architecture). His vision encapsulated the iconic building’s historical significance and timeless appeal. Even as a child, Thomas was fascinated by the structure, an admiration that inspired his technical design approach.

“There are many parallels between an architectural project and the design of an aircraft livery. Both involve a series of stages to complete and constraints to consider. What stands out most to me of these last months, is the human journey behind it all. However, I will also always remember the first 3D simulation - that moment when you can truly say that it has the desired impact. Equally unforgettable is seeing the aircraft in real life, experiencing that magical transition from concept to reality. I am incredibly proud of the result, which blends elegance with modernity.”
- Thomas Faes, designer of the Belgian Icon “Atomium”

Thomas Faes
“Though the final decision wasn’t easy, looking back, choosing Thomas Faes’ design is the perfect fit. The Atomium has long been woven into our identity, from the nine red dots in our logo or on our aircraft’s tails to the lining of the blazers or the scarves in our uniforms. I am very happy to see our newest member of the Belgian Icon’s family joining our fleet for the coming five years.”
- Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO, Brussels Airlines
Bringing the Atomium to the skies
To transform Thomas Faes’ (Faes Architecture) concept into reality, Brussels Airlines’ marketing team refined his design to meet all technical specifications. The painting process required over 400 liters of paint and took about 2,400 hours from start to finish. Renowned XXL airbrush artist André Eisele, who has worked on all eight previous Belgian Icons, once again created a stunning masterpiece.
OO-SNM’s interior is also remarkable, guiding passengers through the structure’s history. From original sketches and historical photos of its 1958 construction to present-day imagery, the design tells the story of Belgium’s iconic monument.

"This collaboration between the Atomium and Brussels Airlines represents a perfect union of two Belgian icons that have long served as ambassadors for our country's innovation and creativity. Just as the Atomium has welcomed visitors from around the world since 1958, Brussels Airlines connects Belgium to global destinations daily. Seeing our beloved monument soaring through the skies is not only a stunning visual tribute but also a powerful symbol of our shared mission to showcase the best of Belgium internationally. We are incredibly proud to see the Atomium take flight and bring a piece of Belgium to every corner of the world Brussels Airlines reaches."
- Julie Almau Gonzalez, General Director, the Atomium
First maiden flight
The aircraft's first commercial flight is scheduled for March 27, 2025, departing for Prague (SN2809) at 9.25am.

SPECIAL SCHEME - 50,000 people voted for their favorite Belgian Icon, jury selects winner from top 5

Lucky Luke, the Atomium, Cycling, Poppies and Shrimp fishers were the most popular designs

Brussels Airlines received over 50,000 votes for the next Belgian Icon. The five designs with the most votes have been presented to a jury who selected the final winner who will be announced early November. The five most popular designs are (in random order): Lucky Luke, the Atomium, Cycling, Poppies and Shrimp Fishers.

In August, Brussels Airlines launched a contest: everyone with the Belgian nationality or living in Belgium could submit a design for the next Belgian Icon. The airline received no less than 900 designs. An internal jury selected 15 finalists. Between October 4 and October 11, everyone could vote for their favorite design.

“We are pleased to see so many people cast their vote. It’s clear that the Belgian Icon contest was ‘the talk of the town’ in Belgium. As the Belgian home carrier, we want to proudly present our country to the world, and our Belgian Icons play an important part in that strategy. The design contest challenged people in Belgium to reflect on what makes us proud and who we are as a nation. We’re glad to have sparked that discussion.”
- Michel Moriaux, Head of Marketing, Brussels Airlines

Jury time
Brussels Airlines gathered a jury to choose the winning design from the final five.
These were the members of the jury:
- Sandra Kim, who won the Eurovision Song Contest for Belgium in 1986,
- Alex Callier, from Hooverphonic, the band that made the iconic safety video for Brussels Airlines,
- Philippe Geluck, from the well-known ‘Le Chat’ cartoons,
- Michèle George, who won two gold medals during the Paralympic games in Paris 2024,
- Sandrine Corman, former miss Belgium and TV Host,
- Gabrielle Szwarcenberg, the designer of the Brussels Airlines uniforms,
- Elisia Poelman, painter, and Griet Aesaert, who has her own label of designer handbags, and both created the amenity kits for Brussels .

Brussels Airlines also had two members in the jury: CEO Dorothea von Boxberg and Michel Moriaux, Head of Marketing.

“We’ve shown all the designs to the entire jury and had a very interesting debate. Afterwards, each jury member could vote individually for their favorite design. The jury was not informed about the number of votes the designs got during the contest last week, to give all five designs an equal chance. It was not an easy decision as all designs in the final five are very impressive and could be great Belgian Icons.”
- Michel Moriaux, Head of Marketing, Brussels Airlines
Brussels Airlines will reveal the winner on November 5.

SPECIAL SCHEME - World premiere: Brussels Airlines and Tomorrowland present aircraft with augmented reality in new livery

“Amare” is the new Belgian Icon representing the music festival and airline all over the world

Brussels, April 25th, 2024 – Brussels Airlines and Tomorrowland proudly present “Amare”, the newest Belgian Icon. Amare represents unity for people all over the world. The brand-new Airbus A320neo’s livery features augmented reality, a world-first. Both partners also ramp-up efforts to make the Tomorrowland-flights more sustainable.

During an event in Brussels Airlines’ Maintenance & Engineering hangar, the new livery was presented to media, guests, and employees. The new Belgian Icon is a tribute to the world-famous music festival Tomorrowland and demonstrates once more the Belgitude of Brussels Airlines, whereby the airline brings the world to Belgium and brings the best of Belgium to the world.

The design is a world premiere: Amare is the first aircraft to feature augmented reality in its livery as the bird comes to life when scanned through specific Social Media channels such as Instagram and TikTok. This feature provides The People of Tomorrow a first augmented storytelling behind the world-famous magical creature Amare, which symbolizes unity and transcending time and space. The whole design process of the livery took about 15 months and great attention has been given to details, from the feathers of the bird to the sparkles of the fireworks transitioning into the Brussels Airlines’ logo.

The Tomorrowland experience will of course continue inside the aircraft where passengers will enjoy the impressive sound system and special mood lighting in the cabin.

Exploring the world in a more responsible way
Both partners are aware of their environmental impact and have been working to reduce it over the past few years. The new Amare is the second brand-new A320neo (with registration number OO-SBB) having joined Brussels Airlines’ fleet in December 2023.
The neo emits up to 20% less CO2 and up to 50% less noise than its predecessors. The new Amare is thus a tangible example of how Brussels Airlines and Tomorrowland are aiming to reduce their ecological impact.
Furthermore, all Global Journey Packages Brussels Airlines and Tomorrowland sell together will from now on be Green Fares, which compensate the flight emissions with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (20%) and thanks to the investment into qualitative CO2-reducing programmes (80%). To top it off, Tomorrowland and Brussels Airlines signed an agreement to invest in the purchase of SAF to compensate the total carbon emissions of all party flights that will be operated.
“Brussels Airlines has been a proud partner of Tomorrowland since 2012 and I am happy to announce that we will extend this partnership until 2028. We have many things in common such as the passion to explore the world and connecting cultures, but also the awareness of our environmental footprint and our willingness to take the necessary steps to reduce our impact. These shared values make this partnership such a success.”
- Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO, Brussels Airlines
First maiden flight
Amare will not only bring the festivalgoers to Tomorrowland but will be operating commercial flights as from 26 April 2024. It will leave on its “maiden voyage” on 26 April 2024 to Tenerife, at 1.20pm, flight number SN3781.

FLEET - Brussels Airlines takes delivery of its first A320neo

Brussels Airlines, Belgium’s national airline and member of the Lufthansa Group, has taken delivery of its first out of five new A320neo aircraft.

The A320neo is part of the airline's fleet renewal strategy to operate the latest state of the art, efficient aircraft in order to meet Brussels Airlines’ ambitious sustainability targets.

The A320neo incorporates the latest technologies, including new-generation CFM International LEAP-1A engines for more efficiency and Sharklets for improved aerodynamics, which together reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions by at least 20 per cent. The aircraft is also a good neighbour at airports with a 50 per cent lower noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft.

The Brussels Airlines A320neo features a single class layout with 180 seats.

Equipped with the Airbus Airspace cabin, the A320neo will take the passenger experience to new highs in comfort, ambience and service. Unique and customisable lighting sets the mood for all phases of the flight, maximising passenger relaxation in the widest and quietest cabin in its class.

The new A320neo will join Brussels Airlines' all Airbus fleet of 43 aircraft, including 34 A320 Family aircraft and nine A330-300s. Perfectly sized for the European market, the new aircraft will enter into service on the carrier’s short- to medium-haul network.

With over 9,700 orders from more than 130 customers worldwide, the A320 Family is the world’s most popular aircraft.

Brussels Airlines expands A320neo fleet, wet-leases CRJs

Brussels Airlines (SN, Brussels National) has expanded its A320-200N plans by a further two aircraft, with deliveries expected in 2024. The carrier also plans to restart a wet-lease cooperation with CityJet (WX, Dublin Int'l) during the summer 2023 season.
The Belgian carrier will source the two new additional A320neo from the order book of its parent, Lufthansa Group, to replace two A319-100s. Brussels Airlines previously announced plans to add three A320neo in 2023. The aircraft will also replace A319s, although the carrier did not provide a more specific delivery timeline.
The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows the carrier's narrowbody fleet comprises fifteen A319-100s (17.6 years old on average) and sixteen A320-200s (17.9 years).
Following the recent delivery of the first two A320-200Ns to Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna), Brussels Airlines remains the only mainline Lufthansa Group carrier with no A320neo Family aircraft in its fleet.
On top of the A320neo plans, Brussels Airlines outlined other steps to add more capacity during the expected busy Summer 2023 season. The airline plans to induct a further two A320-200s on a permanent basis, although it did not reveal their source and did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment.
Brussels Airlines will also resume the wet-leasing in of regional aircraft. It said that during summer 2023, Ireland's CityJet would operate two CRJ900s on its behalf. The ACMI/charter specialist currently operates twenty-two CRJ900s, all of them on behalf of SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK, Copenhagen Kastrup). However, CityJet had operated four SSJ 100/95s and then five CRJ900s on behalf of Brussels Airlines between 2017 and the COVID-induced termination of the contract in April 2020. Brussels Airlines does not operate any in-house regional aircraft.
