Blue1 ends B717 revenue operations

Blue 1 has ended B717-200 operations as of Saturday, October 31. Research indicates the type's last flight was SK1768 from Prague to Stockholm Arlanda. Three of Blue1's five remaining B717s are destined for Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) with the other two believed to be going to Spain's Volotea (V7, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan) though this is subject to change.

Earlier this year, Blue1's new owner CityJet (WX, Dublin Int'l) announced plans to re-equip the Finnish carrier with a fleet of eight CRJ-900s. Once the Bombardier twinjets arrive, they will then be leased out to SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK, Copenhagen Kastrup) on a three-year wet-lease contract beginning March of next year.

Blue to offload B717 fleet to Volotea, Delta

Blue 1 (KF, Helsinki Vantaa) has secured sales agreements with Spanish budget operator Volotea (V7, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan) for four of its outgoing B717-200s Flygtorget has reported. 

"Demand for used machines is good," Michael Wångdahl, Blue 1's CEO said. "The first four have gone to Volotea in Spain and there will not be any problem in getting rid of the five we have left."

The Swedish aviation news site claims the Finnish operator's remaining five B717s will end up with Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson), now the world's largest operator of the type with eighty-eight mostly ex-AirTran Airways (FL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) jets acquired from Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field). Other operators that had expressed a keen interest in the Finnish B717s include Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingford Smith) and Hawaiian Airlines (HA, Honolulu).

Late last year, SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK, Copenhagen Kastrup) president and CEO Rickard Gustafson said the B717's high unit costs would see it phased out in favour of five B737-600s beginning in autumn this year. In all, SAS plans to transform Blue 1 from a commercial airline focussing on the Finnish domestic market, to a production company offering flexible wet-lease services to SAS.

Where Does the Boeing 717 Fly? - November 2013 Network Update

When Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas the future of its MD-95 programme was in serious doubt. However, Boeing stuck with the project with the belief there was a sufficient demand for a 120-seat aircraft and relaunched the jet as the Boeing 717. Unfortunately, it was much heavier than many of the new regional jet arrivals in the 100- to 120-seat market and never really fulfilled its potential. Although only 156 aircraft were delivered when production ended in May 2006, the type continues to be used across the globe with US major, Delta Air Lines, recently becoming the latest customer for the type.



Every month The HUB will provide an update on the current Boeing 717 flight schedule and the routes the aircraft is being deployed upon. This list for November 2013 was compiled from OAG Analyser on October 31, 2013 and changes to planned routes are likely. In the table below we also feature the Boeing 717 network size of each operator and the top destinations served by the aircraft. Our latest analysis shoes that Boeing 717 air capacity fell 3.2 per cent in November 2013 versus October 2013.
