i-Fly Air from Kenya took delivery of Fokker 70 5B-DDF (11562)

It does not happen very often nowadays that we can report on a new Fokker airline, so we are happy to announce a new Fokker 70-operator. On 10 November, i-Fly Air from Kenya took delivery of Fokker 70 5B-DDF (11562), which is now registered as 5Y-IFA. The aircraft was ferried from Woensdrecht to Nairobi and saw stops at Luxembourg and Cairo.

It has previously been operated by Tus Airways, between February 2018 and December 2019, and before that with KLM cityhopper as PH-KZB, between February 1996 and October 2017. Originally, this Fokker 70 was destined for Malév and later Sempati Air but that never happened.

i-Fly Air launched in February this year and is currently flying domestic routes only from its base at Nairobi-Wilson. Until now, the fleet consisted only of Fokker 50 5Y-IFL (20151).

VLM Airlines introduced three new destinations to its Antwerp (ANR) network on 4 June, namely Aberdeen (ABZ), Cologne Bonn (CGN) and Rostock

The airline will offer three weekly flights to the Scottish city, with two of the three weekly return services flying via the carrier’s existing Birmingham service. The latter two new destinations will be flown on a tri-city routing, with flights operating Antwerp–Cologne Bonn–Rostock–Cologne Bonn–Antwerp. This service will be flown five times weekly. None of the routes launched this week will face direct competition, with VLM utilising its fleet of Fokker 50s on the new services. The average sector length of the new routes is 530 kilometres

Austrian Airlines ends Fokker 70 operations

Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) has confirmed it has ended Fokker 70 operations following the retirement of its last active machine of the type late last month.

In a statement to ch-aviation, the Lufthansa Group unit confirmed OE-LFQ (msn 11568) conducted its last commercial service on July 30 as OS536 Bologna-Vienna. As with the other Fokker Aircraft in Austrian's fleet, it will be ferried to Bratislava where it will be taken up by Alliance Aviation Slovakia (Bratislava), the Slovak sister of Australian carrier Alliance Airlines (QQ, Brisbane Int'l).

It is recalled that in November 2015, Alliance Air's parent firm, Alliance Aviation Services, agreed to acquire Austrian Airlines' entire fleet of twenty-one Fokker jets - fifteen Fokker 100s and six Fokker 70s - for a total consideration of USD15 million.
As it stands, the Austrian Fokker fleet now consists of just four Fokker 100s, the last of which is slated to end commercial service in December.
Austrian is replacing the outgoing Fokker capacity with seventeen ex-Lufthansa CityLine EMB-195s.

Suriname's Fly All Ways to resume scheduled ops in late 2Q17

Fly All Ways Airlines (8W, Paramaribo Int'l) is planning to resume scheduled passenger flights later this month following a six-month hiatus from the market.

In a statement, the Surinamese carrier said a 2x weekly Paramaribo Int'l-Curacao return service would commence from June 25 onwards. Operations are on-board Fokker 70 equipment.

The airline's management has said that aside from Curacao, other unspecified destinations are also under active consideration.

Since withdrawing from the scheduled passenger market in January, Fly All Ways has focussed on the ACMI/charter market - assisting Insel Air (7I, Curacao) in particular.

Suriname's Fly All Ways readying for scheduled operations

Fly All Ways Airlines is planning to commence scheduled passenger flights later this year having conducted charter operations since its inception in early 2015.

In a statement, the Surinamese carrier said it was considering offering regular flights from Paramaribo Int'l to Georgetown Cheddi Jagan In Guyana and St. Maarten with route studies currently being finalized.

The Blue Wing Airlines (BWI, Paramaribo Zorg en Hoop) subsidiary currently operates a pair of ex-KLM cityhopper (WA, Amsterdam) Fokker 70s.

KLM sells seven Fokker 70s to Air Niugini

Today saw the symbolic transfer of the first of seven Fokker 70 aircraft from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea. KLM will begin phasing out the Fokker 70 in December this year, at which time it will also welcome two new Embraer 190s.

Insel Air eyes four more ex-KLM Fokker 70s

Insel Air is planning to acquire four more Fokker 70s from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines  this year adding to the three it bought in July 2014. CEO Albert Kluyver told CAPA in an interview that the Curaçaoan carrier's board is still considering the purchase which, if concluded, would see two delivered in early 2016 and two more in early 2017.
