SPECIAL LIVERY - From runway to home run: WestJet unveils Toronto Blue Jays co-branded aircraft

Livery signifies seven-year partnership renewal as the official airline of Canada’s team

WestJet today celebrated the renewal of its long-standing partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays by taking it to new heights – 35,000 feet to be exact. The airline unveiled a specially designed co-branded Toronto Blue Jays Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, connecting fans in communities across Canada and reinforcing WestJet’s position as a leading national airline.

“Our renewed partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays represents a shared commitment to bringing Canadians closer together through meaningful, memorable moments,” said Samantha Taylor, WestJet Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Experience Officer.

“Together, we are creating opportunities to connect fans to the game they love while celebrating the spirit of community that unites us across the country. Our co-branded aircraft is a bold and visible symbol of that connection, proudly showcasing our partnership from coast-to-coast-to-coast and reinforcing our shared dedication to delivering exceptional experiences for Canadians.”

The co-branded livery on WestJet tail #386 was revealed during a special celebration at the WestJet YYZ hangar. Nearly 1,000 WestJetters, Toronto Blue Jays representatives, and community members gathered to commemorate the long-standing partnership and get an insider look at the aircraft livery. Among the celebrations were Toronto Blue Jays alumni Edwin Encarnación and Pat Borders, and even an appearance from ACE, the Toronto Blue Jays’ beloved mascot.

The livery connects the dynamic energy that defines both WestJet and the Toronto Blue Jays. The iconic colours paired with the sweeping design depict the action of an aircraft at takeoff and the arc of a ball soaring off the bat. Guests should keep their eyes to the skies as the aircraft is scheduled to take its first flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport on June 24.

“This partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays is rooted in uniting Canadians through shared experiences, a deep love of the game and building connections that go beyond the field,” said Steve McClelland, Vice President, Loyalty and Strategic Partnerships, WestJet.

Originally established in 2012, the renewed agreement coincides with a milestone year for both organizations, as the Toronto Blue Jays celebrate their 50th season and WestJet marks 30 years of connecting Canadians. The new livery and WestJet’s newest player ambassador, Ernie Clement, are just a few of the moments that celebrate the iconic partnership.

“Our partnership with WestJet has been instrumental in bringing Blue Jays baseball to fans across Canada,” said Mark Ditmars, Vice President, Partnerships, Toronto Blue Jays. “As we celebrate our 50th season, this renewed commitment – and the unveiling of this co-branded aircraft – reflects our share values of teamwork and building community.”

WestJet continues its commitment to building meaningful, long-term relationships that resonate with Canadians – fostering community connection and celebrating the moments that bring people together.

Canada's WestJet suspends three transatlantic routes

WestJet (WS, Calgary) has suspended its transatlantic services between three Canadian cities and Europe for the 2023 summer schedule to cope with capacity constraints.

In a statement on January 30, the airline announced it has temporarily halted services between Halifax and Europe. The Canadian Press news agency reported that it had already stopped transatlantic services from Vancouver International and Toronto Pearson in early December 2022.

The moves were part of a series of strategic decisions to suspend transatlantic flying from select Canadian cities as it continues to manage and recover its network amid capacity constraints, the carrier said.

"The airline remains committed to engaging with local stakeholders and community members to evaluate the return of transatlantic service in 2024, as well as for all network opportunities moving forward. WestJet's focus remains on positioning its network to meet the travel demands of Canadians while strengthening its footprint across Eastern Canada through sun and leisure travel which will be bolstered by its recent acquisition announcement of 42 additional B737-10 aircraft," the statement read. The airline also has nineteen B737-8s on order, ch-aviation fleets advanced data reveals.

"As we continue to responsibly balance our schedule alongside operational requirements, capacity constraints and the deployment of our aircraft across Canada, we are making these difficult decisions now to enable us to re-position our investments to best serve the province for years to come," Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, John Weatherill commented on the Halifax decision.

"As WestJet plans to announce its summer schedule in the coming weeks, the airline looks forward to enhancing domestic offerings from coast-to-coast, inclusive of increased service between Halifax and Western Canada," the airline stated.

In December 2022, WestJet announced its 2023 summer B787-9 routes from Calgary, with Tokyo Narita, Japan, as its first destination in Asia. It also announced increased connectivity between Western Canada and Europe with new services between Calgary and Barcelona El Prat, Spain, and Edinburgh, Scotland, along with increased frequencies on existing European routes. The carrier said it was preparing for broader expansion within Canada and North America over the coming months.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, WestJet has a wide-body fleet of seven B787-9 Dreamliners. It currently serves 29 European destinations, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Edinburgh (UK); Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, CH (Switzerland); Stockholm Arlanda (Sweden); Barcelona and Malaga (Spain); Faro (Portugal); Warsaw Chopin (Poland); Amsterdam Schiphol (The Netherlands); Lamezia Terme, Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, Turin, and Venice Marco Polo (Italy); Athens (Greece); Düsseldorf, Frankfurt International, Hamburg Helmut Schmidt, Munich and Hanover (Germany); Bordeaux, Marseilles, Montpellier, Nantes, and Paris CDG (France); Copenhagen Kastrup (Denmark); Zagreb (Croatia); and Vienna (Austria).

WestJet Expands Fleet with Largest Boeing 737 MAX Jet, Ordering Up to 64 Fuel-efficient Airplanes

 - Canadian carrier orders 42 737-10s with options for an additional 22 jets

- 737-10 will enable WestJet to reduce emissions, meet long-term sustainability goals and grow its network

SEATTLE, Sept. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and WestJet today announced the airline is strengthening its commitment to the 737 MAX family with an order for 42 737-10s and options for an additional 22 jets. With industry-leading fuel efficiency and reliability, the 737-10 will enable the Canadian carrier to undertake an ambitious network expansion and meet its long-term sustainability goals.

"The 737-10 will be a game changer, with one of the lowest costs per seat among mid-range aircraft. This will foster our low-cost positioning and affordability for Canadians," said Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet Group chief executive officer. "In addition, with its lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, the 737-10 will further improve the environmental footprint of our fleet."

Since launching its business with three 737s in 1996, WestJet has grown its Boeing fleet to more than 100 airplanes including the 737-8 and 787 Dreamliner. Including the 737-10, the Calgary-based carrier has more than 60 firm orders for the 737 MAX family.

"The 737-10 will provide WestJet with additional capacity and unrivalled efficiency as the airline expands its network of destinations across Canada and around the world," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are proud that WestJet sees the value of the 737 MAX family and is adding the 737-10 to complement the 737-8 for outstanding capability, flexibility and improved sustainability."

Each 737-10 will reduce CO2 emissions by millions of pounds per year compared to the airplanes it replaces, enabling greater sustainability. As Boeing's largest and most efficient single-aisle jet, the 737-10 seats up to 230 passengers with a range of 3,100 nautical miles. WestJet also has more than 15 737-8s in-service, carrying 178 passengers with a range up to 3,500 nautical miles. Together, the two models will enhance the airline's environmental performance for short- and medium-haul air travel.

With the expansion of its 737 MAX fleet, WestJet's order supports the growth of the aviation industry in Canada. The country is home to one of Boeing's largest international supply bases with more than 550 suppliers and partners. Boeing currently contributes CAD ~$5.3 billion in economic benefit to Canada annually, supporting more than 20,000 jobs. Calgary-Paris The resumption increases the number of points served in Europe by WestJet to three.

WestJet has restored flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) from Calgary (YYC), just days after starting a route from the Canadian city to Amsterdam (AMS). Service to France’s capital resumed on Aug. 20, operating once a week using Boeing 787-9s. The current schedule will remain in place until the end of October.

“Calgary to Paris is a key market for inbound tourism to Western Canada,” WestJet CCO John Weatherill said. “Alongside a successful vaccination rollout across Canada, we are proud to see this route return and will continue to invest in the economic recovery and growth of both Calgary and Alberta [province], following the COVID-19 pandemic.”

With the restart of service to Paris, the airline is now offering flights to three European destinations from YYC. Flights to AMS and London Gatwick (LGW) are each operating twice a week, with both markets increasing to 3X-weekly in September. WestJet is also flying 4X-weekly from Toronto (YYZ) to LGW.

The return of Calgary-Paris restores WestJet's longstanding codeshare partnership with Air France, giving Canadian business and leisure travelers the ability to connect to and from 16 cities in Europe, including Athens, Lisbon, Rome and Venice.

WestJet launched the YYC-CDG route in May 2019 and is the sole provider of nonstop flights between the cities. According to data provided by Sabre Market Intelligence, O&D traffic between Calgary and Paris totaled almost 53,000 two-way passengers in 2019—up from about 24,000 during the previous 12 months.

WestJet said its investment in direct flights from Europe to Alberta drove C$90 million ($71 million) in spend from inbound travelers during 2019.

WestJet introduces Amsterdam route, resumes London Gatwick

Amsterdam will join the airline’s route map in August, while flights to London return in July.

By David Casey

Canada’s WestJet is expanding its international network to include Amsterdam, the largest city in the Netherlands, as well as resuming service to London Gatwick (LGW).

Flights between the airline’s Calgary (YYC) hub and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) will begin on Aug. 5 using a 320-seat Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The route will initially operate twice a week, increasing to 3X-weekly from Sept. 9. The schedule is in place through Nov. 1.

WestJet CCO John Weatherill said the carrier was committed to “putting international investments in place” to support the recovery of Canada’s economy.

“With flights set to begin later this summer, we look forward to helping connect Canadians to their loved ones in Europe, while continuing to provide affordable options for those who want to visit or reconnect with friends and family across our great country,” he added.

The new service is timed to ensure that transatlantic flights departing from Calgary to Amsterdam are scheduled to support late-day departures and daytime arrivals.

Although WestJet is not part of an airline alliance, the carrier has a partnership in place with KLM, which will therefore be able to provide onward connections to destinations in Europe.

As well as adding Amsterdam to its route map, WestJet intends to return to London from July 5. Service to LGW from YYC will operate 2X-weekly, while a 3X-weekly route will be offered from Toronto (YYZ).

Canada still has strict border measures in place to control the spread of COVID-19, with most foreign nationals not permitted to enter the country. However, on June 9 the country took a first cautious step to easing border restrictions, saying it was prepared to relax quarantine rules for fully vaccinated citizens starting in early July.
