FLEET - PNG's Air Niugini cancels its B787-8 order

Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) has cancelled its order for two B787-8s, according to Boeing orders and deliveries data for January 2026. The move leaves the state-owned carrier without a confirmed replacement for its B767-300ER fleet, which is scheduled to exit service this year.

Both B767s are due to be returned to lessors in 2026 upon lease expiry. The B787s had been intended to directly replace these aircraft and open new routes to Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

The cancellation aligns with earlier caution expressed by the airline's board. In a January 2025 press release detailing the carrier's refleeting programme, chairman Karl Yalo noted that while the government had previously approved the purchase, "changing circumstances" had compelled the airline to review the agreement.

However, Air Niugini's then-CEO Gary Seddon told ch-aviation in May 2025 that the commitment remained "intact" and was central to the carrier's long-term international strategy, although he acknowledged the delivery timeline had slipped to late 2027. Seddon said at the time that the airline was "actively considering bridging lift capacity options" to ensure operational continuity.

ROUTES - Air Niugini Adds Flights, Switches To A220S On Sydney–Port Moresby

Air Niugini is set to step up competition with Qantas on Sydney-Port Moresby services with new aircraft and an extra weekly flight.

The Papua New Guinea flag carrier is introducing its new A220-300 fleet on the route from 29 March, with a third weekly service also planned for the city pair. The A220s will replace the 737-800s currently used on the route, which is occasionally also operated by 767s.

While the 138-seater A220s have a lower capacity than the 737-800s, the addition of the extra service will nonetheless increase available seats on the route.

Air Niugini now has three A220s, with the third, P2-PGC, having touched down in the country last month. The carrier’s officer in charge, Captain Samiu Taufa, said the arrival of the A220s is part of “the airline’s determination to modernise operations after years of operating ageing aircraft”.

“Each new A220 strengthens our ability to stabilise operations, increase reliability and provide a better experience for our passengers. This aircraft represents progress, renewal and our commitment to building a future-ready national airline,” Captain Taufa said.

The A220 fleet has thus far been used on domestic routes within PNG. According to the country’s Minister for State Owned Enterprises, William Duma, its government is committed to “strengthening Air Niugini and ensuring reliable air connectivity across Papua New Guinea”.

“A modern and dependable national airline is essential for economic growth, trade, tourism and national unity,” he said.

“The A220 will transform the way our people travel domestically and establish our country as a true gateway connector between the markets of Asia and the Pacific.

 

FLEET - Air Niugini welcomes its third brand new Airbus A220-30

The national airline proudly celebrated the arrival of our latest addition to the fleet — the stunning Airbus A220-300, now proudly sporting our signature livery.

Registered as P2-PGC, this aircraft was brought into Port Moresby today, Thursday, 18th December. 

In command was our very own Captain Beverly Paki, alongside Airbus pilot Captain Thomas Oberreiter and Air Niugini pilot Captain Joachim Ortlauf, who attended as an observer.

The journey began in Montreal, Canada, on December 14th, with stops in Vancouver, Honolulu, and Fiji, before arriving in Port Moresby at 12:00 pm today.

The new A220, P2-PGC, was greeted with a traditional water salute and blessing, officially welcoming the third A220-300 into the Air Niugini fleet.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister for State-Owned Enterprises, Honourable William Duma, along with other government ministers, senior officials, diplomatic corps, senior representatives of statutory bodies, airline partners, Air Niugini Board, management, and staff.

The brand-new aircraft, affectionately dubbed the “People’s Balus,” features a vibrant livery that incorporates Papua New Guinea’s national flag and the official 50th Independence Anniversary logo. This unique livery serves as a flying tribute to the nation’s rich heritage and bright future, proudly showcasing the colours of Papua New Guinea both domestically and around the region.

The intricate painting process was meticulously carried out at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada. A dedicated team of 120 painters worked tirelessly over three shifts, 24/7 to bring the design to life, utilizing eleven distinct colours and employing special airbrushing and advanced stencil overlay techniques to achieve the complex layering effect. This innovative approach marks only the second time Airbus has applied such a technique on an A220 aircraft, setting new standards for aircraft livery design and implementation.

The Airbus A220 comes in two variants — the A220-100 (seating 113 passengers) and the larger A220-300 (seating 138 passengers). Powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and with advanced aerodynamics, the A220 delivers approximately 25 % lower fuel burn per seat and 50 % less noise footprint than the older generation aircraft it will replace. Its cabin offers an exceptional and comfortable inflight experience – featuring wide seats, extra-large windows, spacious overhead bins, free wifi, and a quiet, well-lit environment.
The aircraft currently carries the Canadian test registration, C-FOWU, however following the completion of PNG CASA registration requirements, the People’s Balus will be registered P2-PGA. ORDER - Air Niugini discloses order for two more Airbus A220s

Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, has signed a firm order with Airbus for two more latest generation single-aisle A220-100s.

Toulouse, France, 28 May 2025 – Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, has signed a firm order with Airbus for two more latest generation single-aisle A220-100s. This follows an initial order in 2023 for six aircraft. In addition, the carrier has lease agreements signed for three A220-300s from US-based lessor Azorra.

The new order was disclosed as the first A220 for the airline entered final assembly at Airbus facilities in Mirabel in Canada.
Gary Seddon, Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini said: “The A220 is set to form the backbone of our domestic and regional fleet and will support economic development in Papua New Guinea. As we continue to forecast strong growth we have made the decision to increase our orders for this fuel efficient type, bringing a whole new level of efficiency and comfort for our operations.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business said: “This is Air Niugini's second order for the A220. We are committed to working closely with the airline as we support its fleet renewal programme. The A220 is quite simply the most efficient aircraft in its size category, with a wider and spacious cabin and the range to fly non-stop to any destination on the carrier’s network.”
Combining the longest range, lowest fuel consumption, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category, carrying between 100 to 160 passengers on flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). Depending on cabin configuration, the A220-100 serves the 100-135 seat market, while the larger A220-300 is perfectly tailored for the 120-160 seat market.
The A220 is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines and offers a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

As at the end of April 2025, Airbus had received over 900 orders from more than 30 customers for the A220, of which over 410 have been delivered. The A220 is already in successful service with 24 operators worldwide. The fleet is currently flying on more than 1,600 routes and more than 470 destinations across the globe, confirming its leading position in the small single-aisle market.

FLEET - Air Niugini sees first A220 delivery slip into 3Q24

Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) expects a slight delay in the delivery of its first A220-100, with the airline advising in a July 15 press statement that it is now expected in August 2025 rather than the second quarter of the year. In the interim, the airline said another DHC-8-Q400 is due to ferry in this August.

"Air Niugini remains committed to its fleet replacement program, which will see more modern and efficient aircraft arriving to replace the retiring Fokker fleet," the statement reads. The airline inked an order with Airbus late last year for six A220-100s. In addition, it will lease another two plus three A220-300s from third-party suppliers. The A220s will replace Air Niugini's fleet of six F70s and seven F100s. Earlier in 2023, Air Niugini also signed a deal with Boeing to buy two B787-8s to replace its pair of B767-300ERs.

The PNG government's 2024-28 Public Investment Program for Statutory Authorities values the fleet replacement at PGK3.3 billion kina (USD843.5 million). "The entire fleet replacement program is expected to be completed by 2028," the document reads. "Air Niugini envisages delivering this fleet replacement through a blend of purchasing new, nearly new and leasing new aircraft."

In addition to the B787-8s and A220s, the airline also intends to introduce ten DHC-8-Q400s to replace an aging and varied turboprop fleet that currently includes DHC-8-300, DHC-8-Q200, and DHC-8-Q300 types.

"Acquiring new aircraft will provide Air Niugini with a competitive edge in the aviation industry," the documents adds. "With newer more efficient aircrafts, Air Niugini can drastically reduce its operating costs. The new aircraft burn 27% less fuel than the existing, and maintenance costs will be substantially reduced as they are largely covered by the aircraft manufacturer."

FLEET - AIR NIUGINI WELCOMES ANOTHER BOEING 737 AIRCRAFT

Air Niugini has announced the arrival of its third Boeing 737 aircraft into Port Moresby last night(Sunday 12th May).

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Gary Seddon said the Air Niugini fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft will support the domestic and international operations while progress is made toward the introduction of the new Airbus A220 aircraft from late 2025.

Carrying the registration P2-PXB (Bravo), the new addition has a total of 162 seats: 12 business and 150 economy class. The 737s are replacing Fokker aircraft operations (where possible) as Air Niugini introduces greater capacity on domestic trunk routes, similar to the very popular Lae Express.

“The Fokker jet aircraft have done a tremendous job over the decades; safely and reliably meeting our air transport needs. The new Airbus A220s will replace the retiring Fokkers and become the backbone to Air Niugini’s fleet. In the meantime, our Boeing 737s provide excellent reliability, comfort and safety.”

Mr Seddon thanked Air Niugini’s valued customers for their continued support and loyalty.

FLEET - Air Niugini orders the A220

Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, has signed a firm order with Airbus for six latest generation single aisle A220-100s under its fleet modernisation programme. In addition, the carrier will acquire three A220-300s and another two A220-100s from third party lessors. 

The order was announced at a special event in Port Moresby by Gary Seddon, Acting Chief Executive Officer Air Niugini and Anand Stanley, President Airbus Asia-Pacific, in the presence of the Hon. James Marape, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea and Hon. William Duma, Minister for State Enterprises.

Combining the longest range, lowest fuel consumption and widest cabin in the 100-150 seat category, the A220 will be operated by Air Niugini across its domestic and regional network. The new fleet will deliver more capacity and greater reliability across the domestic network and enable the carrier to fly from capital Port Moresby to new destinations across the Asia-Pacific region.

Gary Seddon, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini said: “This is a milestone in the history of our national airline that will support the growth of trade and tourism in Papua New Guinea. Air Niugini also announced that it has selected a flight planning support system from Airbus subsidiary NAVBLUE for its fleet. Called N-Flight Planning (N-FP), the solution will help the airline optimise on fuel, time and cost to meet operational needs, while ensuring overall safety and compliance.

The A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category, carrying between 100 to 150 passengers on flights of up to 3,450 nautical miles (6,390 km). Depending on cabin configuration, the A220-100 serves the 100-135 seat market, while the larger A220-300 is perfectly tailored for the 120-150 seat market.

The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines. Offering 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, the A220 also has the largest cabin, seats and windows in its class, ensuring superior comfort.

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea, June 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Air Niugini today announced an order for two fuel-efficient 787-8 Dreamliners to support the growth of the carrier's long-haul fleet. The jets will enable the national flag carrier of Papua New Guinea to fly new routes from the Pacific island nation and boost capacity for inbound tourism.

"Signing this contract with Boeing for the purchase of two modern, widebody 787 Dreamliners will enable Air Niugini to grow its network across Asia, Australia, and New Zealand and fulfill its mission as the premier airline in Papua New Guinea, providing the best air service in the region," said Gary Seddon, acting CEO of Air Niugini.

More than 85 customers around the world have placed orders for more than 1,600 Dreamliners, making the 787 Dreamliner the fastest-selling widebody airplane in history. Since entering service in 2011, the 787 family's fuel efficiency, flexibility and range have enabled airlines to open more than 350 new nonstop routes.

Boeing has worked with Air Niugini for more than 45 years. The airline operates a domestic network from Port Moresby across Papua New Guinea, as well as international flights across the Asia-Pacific region, including to Australia, Singapore, Solomon Islands and Fiji. The airline's fleet includes Boeing 737s and 767s.

 

Air Niugini plans fleet renewal

The CEO of Air Niugini has told local newspaper Post Courier that the airline is set to embark on a fleet renewal programme. Initially, the airline is focusing on replacing its jetliners and wants to start the renewal next year.

Air Niugini currently operates two B767-300ERs, one B737-800, six Fokker 70s and seven Fokker 100s. The airline is looking at the Airbus A330neo and Boeing B787 as widebody-replacement, the A320neo and B737MAX for the B737 and the A220 and Embraer E2s for the Fokkers.

It also operates one DHC-8-300 and two DHC-8-400, which are currently not part of the fleet renewal plans.

Officially, the airline still has four B737-8s on order with Boeing but the airline is able to cancel these without penalties due to the delayed delivery of these aircraft.

Air Niugini ends Q400 operations

Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) has ended Dash 8-400/Q400 operations following the return of its last remaining aircraft of the type to its owner, the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd, this week.
According to Skyliner Aviation, P2-PXS (msn 4262) was ferried to Abu Dhabi Bateen on June 22.

Air Niugini is replacing the Bombardier turboprops with Fokker 70s and 100s of which it currently operates five and seven respectively. A further four Fokker 70 aircraft are due this year.

“The F70 has significant advantages over the propeller-driven alternatives, such as the ability to fly 35% more distance for the same load and significantly faster," Air Niugini Board Chairman, Fred Reiher, said. "Importantly, the better range of F70 as compared to Fokker 100, Q400 and ATR will provide more opportunities to improve and expand services to the regional South Pacific countries.”
