EVA Air becomes new A321 operator

EVA Air of Taiwan has become a new operator of Airbus single aisle aircraft following the delivery today of its first A321. The aircraft is being leased from Aviation Capital Group (ACG) and is the first of 12 A321s ordered by the US lessor. The aircraft was handed over at a ceremony in Hamburg attended by Chang Kuo Wei, President of EVA Air.

EVA currently plans to introduce 12 leased A321s into its fleet between now and end-2014 for operation on regional routes. The airline has specified a high comfort two class layout for the aircraft seating 184 passengers. EVA’s A321 fleet will be powered by CFM International CFM56 engines.

"We are delighted to take delivery of our brand new Airbus A321.” said Chang Kuo Wei, EVA Air President. “The innovation and outstanding reliability offered by the A321 match EVA’s commitment to provide the best experience to our passengers. The aircraft will also enable us to enhance our profit potential as a result of lower operating costs.”

“The addition of the A321 to our portfolio reflects the long-term appeal of the aircraft, with its wide operator base, proven economics and strong residual values," said R. Stephen Hannahs, Group Managing Director/CEO, Aviation Capital Group. “We are extremely pleased to be placing our first A321 with one of Asia’s premium carriers, based at the heart of the world’s fastest growing aviation market.”

"We are happy to welcome EVA as our latest A321 operator.” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “The A321 offers the lowest operating costs of any aircraft in its size category and will bring new levels of efficiency for EVA on regional routes. We are also pleased to see ACG add the A321 to its active portfolio, as it becomes an increasingly important financing partner for Airbus.”

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line. To date, more than 8,600 aircraft have already been ordered and over 5,200 delivered to more than 374 customers and operators worldwide

Air New Zealand receives its first ATR 72-600 airliner

Milestone aircraft painted in All Blacks rugby livery
Air New Zealand today took delivery of its first ATR 72-600 aircraft, which is painted in striking all black livery, as part of the airline’s support for New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks. The airline and ATR announced in October 2011 a contract for seven firm 68-seat ATR 72-600 aircraft, plus options for another five, in a deal worth more than US $270 million.

The delivery of this very first ATR 72-600 to Air New Zealand has been witnessed by the former All Blacks rugby player Luke McAllister. Deliveries of the seven firm ATR 72-600s are due to be completed in 2016.
This first ATR 72-600, configured with 68 seats, is scheduled to enter service early in November, with a first flight between Christchurch and Wellington. The new aircraft features the brand new Armonia cabin interior, with improved seating and larger overhead luggage bins.
Air New Zealand currently has a fleet of eleven ATR 72-500 aircraft in service with its subsidiary Mount Cook. The arrival of the new fleet of ATR 72-600s will grow Mount Cook’s ATR fleet and will enable the airline to further expand its domestic operations with new destinations and frequencies. The airline will also optimize seat capacity offering on selected markets, by replacing smaller aircraft types on its regional network.
Air New Zealand has been operating ATR aircraft for nearly 20 years since the introduction of its first ATR -an ATR 72-200- in 1994.
Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe said the ATR 72-600 was a significant milestone in the airline’s ongoing commitment to growing its key domestic business. “The ATR 72-600 order potentially doubles the size of Air New Zealand’s ATR fleet and will put two million additional regional seats into the market,” said Mr Fyfe.

The General Manager of Air New Zealand’s subsidiary Mount Cook Airline, Sarah Williamson, said: “The first new aircraft will enter Mount Cook’s fleet in mid November and over time these new additions to the fleet will enable the airline to further expand its domestic operations with increased frequency, extra capacity and to service new ports.”

Filippo Bagnato, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, said: “We are both delighted and proud that Air New Zealand, a long-term customer of ATR, has again selected our aircraft as an integral part of its regional growth strategy. Almost 20 years ago, Air New Zealand was one of the first airlines in the south-west Pacific region to introduce ATR airliners into its fleet, and now it is among the first in the region to fly the series 600.” He added: “The ATR 72-600 is the most fuel-efficient regional aircraft in the 50-70 seat market. It is also the greenest, emitting less CO2 and making less noise than any comparable aircraft in the market today”.

Kenya Airways to convert its Boeing 737-300 Passenger Jets into Freighters. The aircraft will complement the Boeing 747-400 Safari Connection Freighter

Kenya Airways has announced that it will convert four of its Boeing B737-300 passenger jets into freighters as it ramps up its cargo unit to meet surging cargo transportation demand across Africa and beyond.
The first two of these aircraft are expected to undergo freighter modification by Aeronautical Engineers Inc. (AEI) at its authorized conversion center, Boeing Shanghai Aircraft Services, in Shanghai China.
Kenya Airways Chief Operating Officer Mr. Mbuvi Ngunze, said that the converted Boeing 737 -300 freighters was a cost effective means of boosting efficiency and reliability in the firm’s cargo unit and would translate into a significant enhancement of the firm’s revenue stream.
“We are using our own equipment with minimal additional investment making it cost effective; and since we already know the aircraft, minimal additional training is required to operate the aircraft,” Mr. Ngunze explained.
The aircraft registered as KQC will be the first of the two aircraft that will be converted. It is expected to go out of service by end of October for the conversion which is estimated to take about three months. The aircraft is expected back into service as a freighter February next year. Upon its return, the second Boeing 737-300 aircraft will go out of service and is expected back from the conversion center as a freighter in June 2013.
The converted freighters will operate in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa. The planned destinations include: Juba, Luanda, Bangui, Douala, Yaoundé, Kigali, Entebbe, Dar-es-Salaam, Kinshasa and Bujumbura amongst others.
The regional freighter will allow KQ Cargo to capitalize on full cargo potential on routes that are currently served by the single aisle passenger jets that includes the Embraers and Boeing 737 family. The freighter capacity would also accommodate excess baggage overspill complementing trader traffic especially in Central and west Africa.
Mr. Ngunze said that the converted freighters will add value to the firm’s cargo business by expanding flows from China to other Africa points. At the moment, the Boeing 747 Safari Connection freighter operated by Kenya Airways, KLM and Martin Air from Guangzhou China has been mainly focusing on West Africa bound flows.
“The regional freighters presents value addition through expansion of flows from Far East to other Africa points, a perfect business solution for the in-feed, de-feed capacity mismatch,” he added.
The conversion involves extensive structural work that includes strengthening the floor, frames, door cut-out and installation of a new cargo door and surround to withstand heavier cargo loads and accommodate large freight pallets and containers. Aircraft mechanical and electrical systems will also be modified to suit the aircraft's new mission as a freighter.
The converted freighters will be in a ten pallet format instead of the usual nine pallet on such aircraft in addition to installment of an Ancra main deck cargo loading system.
The vice president of sales and marketing at AEI Robert Convey stated that the B737-300 aircraft conversions is further proof that the narrow body freighter fleet on the African continent is continuing to move into more and modern aircraft.

Boeing Business Jets to Offer the BBJ MAX

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced its intent to offer the BBJ MAX 8 and the BBJ MAX 9, furthering Boeing's dominance in the large cabin ultra-long-range business jet market. The announcement was made today at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Conference in Orlando, Fla.
The BBJ MAX 8, based on the 737 MAX 8, will be the first member of the BBJ MAX family to take advantage of the efficiency of CFM International's new LEAP-1B engines and the Boeing developed Advanced Technology winglet. The new engine and Advanced Technology winglet will provide customers with a 13 percent fuel-use improvement. Together, these features will translate to a range of 6,325 nautical miles – a more than 14-percent increase over today's class-leading BBJ 2 that will be validated in final configuration and flight test.
The BBJ MAX 8 will share the same cabin size with today's BBJ 2, offering customers a 19-foot longer cabin and three times the cargo space of today's BBJ. The BBJ MAX 8 will also improve on its market leading range capability and maintain the BBJ advantages of lower cabin altitude, unmatched reliability and outstanding product support around the globe.
"We anticipate the BBJ MAX 8 will be a very strong seller as a VIP aircraft and will likely capture a larger share of the market because it's the right combination of performance, space and comfort," said Captain Steve Taylor, BBJ president. "For VIP customers, extended range and exceptional comfort are equally important. The BBJ MAX will ensure our customers get the best of both."
Boeing also intends to develop the plan for the BBJ MAX 9 based on the 737 MAX 9. Similar performance improvements are anticipated, offering a 6,255 nm range with an even larger cabin than the BBJ MAX 8. Plans for a BBJ MAX 7 are being studied.

Finnair and Marimekko Launch Design Collaboration

PR Newswire – Finnair and Finnish design house Marimekko are teaming up to enhance the air travel experience with a new design partnership. From spring 2013 all Finnair aircraft will feature a Marimekko for Finnair collection of textiles and tableware, featuring Marimekko’s classic patterns. The Marimekko for Finnair collection is specially designed to add a light and fresh visual and tactile dimension to the onboard experience, while lightening the airline’s carbon footprint as well.

Two of Finnair’s long-haul aircraft will also wear livery based on Marimekko designs. An Airbus A340 featuring Maija Isola’s iconic Unikko floral print from 1964 is already operating between Helsinki and Finnair’s Asian destinations, and it will be followed by another aircraft in Marimekko livery in spring 2013.

“Finnair has a strong design heritage, and this cooperation brings our design thinking to a new level,” says Mika Vehviläinen, Finnair CEO. “Our goal is to become a design airline, and bring our customers unique experiences for all five senses. Cooperation with Marimekko is an important step towards this target. Finnair aircraft will become roving ambassadors of timeless Finnish design and creativity, giving our customers a special experience when they fly with us.”

”We hope that Marimekko’s sympathetic Unikko poppy flowers flying up in the sky as well as our other iconic prints as a part of the in-flight experience bring joy to people around the world,” says Mika Ihamuotila, Marimekko CEO. “Lately, we have wanted to connect Marimekko’s colourful design and fashion with surprising parties and forms of art, such as ballet, modern dance or visual arts. Now it is time to do something unforeseen up in the sky. I believe that the Marimekko and Finnair design collaboration will bring to hectic and often grey air travel joy, peace of mind and beautiful memories.”

During the three-year collaboration, an exclusive selection of Marimekko design products are also available for Finnair customers in in-flight sales and the Finnair Plus Shop.

In addition to adding value to the customer experience, both companies look forward to the collaboration helping build more awareness of their brands. Both companies have a long established presence in Japan but are growing rapidly in other Asian markets, China in particular.

“Finnair is a natural partner for Marimekko, as in my opinion it has been the first airline in the world to lift up design and place it strongly at the center of its service,” continues Ihamuotila. “With our collaboration we want to show how design can help improve the well-being of people in different moments of life. Furthermore, our design collaboration with Finnair supports our growth strategy, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, which is one of Marimekko’s key market areas.”

“Both of these brands are about bringing positivity, high quality and peace of mind to customers,” adds Vehviläinen. “We believe this collaboration will help generate new experiences and lasting, positive memories for a whole new generation of Finnair passengers in Asia.”

A320neo's first Pratt & Whitney test engine takes shape

Significant milestone reached and A320neo programme on track

Airbus’ A320neo programme has moved a step closer to the real aircraft with the assembly of the first engine-to-test – the Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PurePower PW1100G-JM engine. This engine is due to begin testing very soon at P&W’s facilities in Florida, USA.
The PurePower engine uses an advanced gear system for the fan. This configuration was validated in Toulouse on Airbus’ A340 flying-testbed aircraft in 2008 during P&W’s ‘geared-turbofan’ conceptual phase. The gear allows the engine’s fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine. The combination of the gear system and an all-new advanced core is a solution which delivers fuel efficiency and environmental benefits.
Paul Adams, Senior Vice President, Operations & Engineering, Pratt & Whitney said: “Pratt & Whitney is proud that its PurePower PW1100G-JM will be the first engine to enter service on the Airbus A320neo. We are confident the Geared Turbofan provides the best value proposition for the future, and that our new engine for the A320neo family is well positioned to support Airbus in this market segment.”
Klaus Roewe, Airbus’ Senior Vice President A320neo Family said: “The Pratt & Whitney PurePower engine is an integral part of the Airbus A320neo family of aircraft.” He adds: “Commencing the test programme of the new engine is an important milestone on our common journey and we are looking forward to the test results and also to the continued integration work of the engine into the aircraft.”
The A320neo gives operators a choice of two new engines – the PurePower PW1100G-JM from Pratt & Whitney and CFM International’s LEAP-1A turbofan, each with a fully optimised fan diameter and advanced core. Moreover, coupled with Airbus’ Sharklet large wing tip devices, these enhancements together ensure that the best-selling A320 Family will retain its market leading position as the most capable and cost-efficient single-aisle airliner for the foreseeable future.
Overall the A320neo Family will deliver fuel savings of 15 percent and an additional flight distance of 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres), or the ability to carry two tonnes more payload at a given range. For the environment, the A320neo’s fuel savings translate into some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year (the equivalent of taking 1,000 mid-size cars off the roads). Additionally, the A320neo NOx emissions are 50 percent below CAEP/6, and this aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint.
The A320neo, with almost 1,500 firm orders from 30 customers since its launch, is the fastest selling commercial aircraft ever and is on track to enter service from 2015. For the A320 Family as a whole, over 8,600 aircraft have been ordered and almost 5,300 delivered to about 350 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best selling single-aisle aircraft Family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets.
Airbus is the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer offering the most modern, innovative and efficient family of passenger airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats. Airbus has design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK, and Spain as well as subsidiaries in the US, China, Japan and in the Middle East. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS company.
