Tough times at Alitalia as it parks nearly 13% of its fleet

Alitalia has temporarily parked twenty-two of its aircraft. Though it still officially claims to operate 137 aircraft, extensive ch-aviation ACARS research has shown that the Italian national carrier has over the past two weeks parked two A319-100s, four A320-200s, thirteen A321-100s, two A330-200s in addition to one Air One A320-200.
Most of the aircraft are at least temporarily stored at Rome Fiumicino. Earlier this year, Alitalia phased-out one A320-200 (joined by another which was damaged in a landing incident at Fiumicino) and an A321-100.
Collectively, Gruppo Alitalia, which consists of Alitalia,  Alitalia CityLiner, Alitalia Express, Air One and Volare Airlines, now operates 120 aircraft namely twenty A319-100s, fifty-one A320-200s, nine A321-100s, ten A330-200s, ten B777-200(ER)s, fifteen EMB-175s and five EMB-190s. The move comes at a delicate time for Alitalia as it presses ahead with a controversial EUR300million (USD408million) capital-raising drive required to keep it afloat.

British Airways holds talks with Chinese carriers

British Airways has held talks with various Chinese carriers including Spring Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Sichuan Airlines as it looks to boost its presence in the world's second largest economy. Speaking to Bloomberg newswire at the CAPA World Aviation Summit, IAG CEO, Willie Walsh, said British Airways had been "very late into China" due to relatively poor Sino-Anglo trade links and a lack of flight slots at its London Heathrow hub.
However, services to Chengdu, added after the purchase of bmi british Midland freed up 42 slots, are exceeding expectations. “It is a huge market,” he said. “There is a long list of cities in China we see with opportunities.” In addition to Chengdu, British Airways' Chinese network is limited to Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong flights.

FIJI LINK’ TO TAKE TO THE SKIES IN 2014

Fiji Airways announces new name for subsidiary Pacific Sun as part of on-going restructure

Wednesday, 27th November 2013: Fiji Airways today announced that its subsidiary airline, Pacific Sun, will be rebranded as ‘Fiji Link’ in 2014, and unveiled the carrier’s new livery.

Pacific Sun, Fiji’s main domestic and regional airline, is wholly owned by Fiji Airways, and the rebranding of the airline is the next step in the on-going restructure of the domestic airline group.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Stefan Pichler said: “As we’ve stated previously, Pacific Sun hasn’t had a brand alignment with its commercial position since its inception. Following the rebranding of Fiji Airways, we made it a priority to create a new identity for our regional carrier. ‘Fiji Link’ will fulfil its role as an extension of the Fiji Airways network, carrying our customers throughout Fiji and beyond within the Pacific. Importantly, it will deliver all the Fijian hospitality and warmth customers expect when visiting our region.”

The new airline brand will have a distinct, yet part-of-the-family, look with its parent Fiji Airways. The Fiji Airways earthy colour palette has been retained on the soon-to-be-adopted livery of ‘Fiji Link’ aircraft. The ‘Fiji Link’ wordmark reflects its connection with Fiji Airways as does the use of the Teteva and the Makare motifs on the tail, which are a prominent part of the Fiji Airways brand.

An internal brand development process resulted in four design and naming options which were then to be voted on by the public and the staff of Pacific Sun and Fiji Airways.

Mr. Pichler added: “We want to talk and listen to our customers, our people and the nation. That’s why we asked them for their favourite brand. Over 500 people inside and outside the company participated in our surveys and the name ‘Fiji Link’ emerged as the clear favourite with about 60 % of the votes. ‘Fiji Link’ works on a design level as well as an aspirational brand level. I am delighted with the outcome, thank you all!”

Shaenaz Voss, Pacific Sun’s General Manager said: “In our further unprompted public surveys, the word ‘Link’ was a clear preference as a key term for the new name. It was extremely important to us that our staff, particularly the Pacific Sun team, were part of the decision making process. ‘Fiji Link’ is an appropriate name for our airline and like its parent Fiji Airways, ‘Fiji Link’ will fly the Fijian flag wherever it flies. As an important part of our regional network, the airline will embody Fiji’s position as a hub and gateway to the South Pacific. We are reinventing ourselves with this rebrand and once completed, our customers and the people of the Fiji will experience a new level of service excellence from ‘Fiji Link’.”

The new brand will be adopted in mid-2014 after the arrival of Pacific Sun’s new ATR72 aircraft. Further details on the rebrand will be announced in the coming months.

Boeing Delivers C-17 Cargo Compartment Trainer to Royal Australian Air Force, Full-scale facility simulates day and night operations

BRISBANE, Australia, Nov. 26, 2013 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has delivered a full-scale C-17 Globemaster III Cargo Compartment Trainer (CCT) to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), ensuring that RAAF loadmaster training can be cost-effectively completed in Australia instead of in the United States.

The CCT is a fully functional replica of a C-17 fuselage in a dedicated facility at RAAF Base Amberley. It can realistically simulate both day and night operating and loading conditions for loadmaster, aeromedical evacuation and aeromedical specialist training.

The facility at Amberley also includes classrooms, loading vehicles, simulated cargo and other training assets. It is the third operational Boeing C-17 CCT; the two others are located at Altus Air Force Base in the United States.

"The C-17 program has delivered a substantial capability to Australia; this CCT represents the final component of that program," said GPCAPT Warren Bishop, Air 8000 program director. "It will add significant value to the RAAF, providing the capability to train pilots and loadmasters in Australia."

The RAAF operates six Boeing-built C-17s that support military, humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping missions around the world.

Embraer Sells One More E190 to BA CityFlyer

São José dos Campos, Brazil, November 26, 2013 – Embraer and BA CityFlyer, British Airways’ wholly owned regional subsidiary, announced today the acquisition of one additional E190 jet. This firm order will be included in Embraer’s 2013 fourth quarter backlog. The E-Jet will be operated from the Company’s main operating base at London City Airport (LCY).

“BA CityFlyer’s follow-on order is a great endorsement of the airline’s confidence in the

Given its mid-range capabilities, it ably supports our plans to fly new routes and increase frequencies on existing ones,” said Adam Carson, Managing director of BA CityFlyer. “Delivering terrific performance, and with an excellent climb rate and superior environmental qualities, the E190 is proving ideal for our London City operations.”

Since entering revenue service in 2004, Embraer has received over 1,350 orders for its E-Jets. More than 1,000 have been delivered. E-Jets have been added to the fleets of 64 airlines that are now flying them in low cost, regional and mainline business applications.

Xiamen Airlines Celebrates 100th Boeing Airplane in Its All-Boeing Fleet

Milestone delivery testifies to rapid development of China's airline sector

SEATTLE and XIAMEN, China , Nov. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - On Nov. 12 in Seattle , Boeing delivered a brand new 737-800 airplane to Xiamen Airlines, a SkyTeam member. It is the 100th plane in the airline's all-Boeing fleet.

Xiamen Airlines commenced service in 1985 with two Boeing 737-200s serving three cities. The carrier is now China's sixth-largest, serving 218 domestic routes as well as 26 international and regional routes. With delivery of the Boeing 737-800, Xiamen Airlines' fleet now consists of 100 aircraft. It is China's only all-Boeing fleet and one of the world's youngest, with an average age of 5.08 years.

"Having an all-Boeing fleet is a key component of our growth strategy and our ability to achieve 27 consecutive years of profitability," said Che Shanglun, president and chairman of Xiamen Airlines. "With excellent reliability, operational efficiency and long range, Boeing's planes have enabled us to expand our network internationally."

"Xiamen Airlines is a valued customer of the Boeing Company and we are delighted to see their remarkable growth over the past 29 years," said Ihssane Mounir , senior vice president of sales for Northeast Asia , Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership by providing more value with our industry-leading products and services."

Over the next two years, Xiamen Airlines plans to add 30 more B737-800s and six more B787s, expanding its fleet to 136 airplanes, and to expand globally by gradually forming a route network that radiates across the Asia Pacific region and connects with Europe and the U.S.

Xiamen Airlines' expects to keep growing of its Boeing fleet beyond 2016. The carrier has just signed Letters of Request to buy 70 B737NGs and B737MAXs. By 2020, the fleet will grow to more than 200 airplanes.

Xiamen Airlines' rapid growth is a testament to the tremendous growth of China's airline business. In 1972, China established the Civil Aviation Administration of China ("CAAC") as the only player in aviation, with only nine registered aircraft in the fleet. At the end of 2012, China had more than 40 airlines, with an industry-wide fleet exceeding 2,000 aircraft.

Boeing projects investments of nearly $800 billion in China for the purchase of 5,580 new commercial aircraft during the next 20 years. It would account for 16% of global demand, and reflects an average requirement of nearly 200 single-aisle and over 60 wide-body aircraft each year.

Boeing Delivers 3rd P-8I to India

SEATTLE, Nov. 22, 2013 – The third Boeing [NYSE: BA] P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft for the Indian Navy arrives today in India, on Schedule.

The 2013 Dubai Airshow has once again underscored Middle East airlines’ growing importance in the global air transport marketplace, as well as the Airbus jetliner product line’s ability to meet their needs in both passenger and cargo operations.

With a clearly upbeat atmosphere at this week’s biennial aerospace gathering, carriers from the region made headlines by placing orders valued at billions of dollars – which also marked endorsements for the full range of Airbus commercial aircraft.

Emirates Airline’s contract for 50 more A380s provides additional aircraft to expand its route coverage and for aircraft replacement, bringing the total number of A380s ordered by this Dubai-based carrier to 140.

“The A380 is a hugely popular airplane, and people go out of their way to fly it,” explained Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline. “I continue to be impressed how the A380 attracts attention, whether at the world’s airports or during events such as the Dubai Airshow – people can’t wait to get aboard the aircraft.”

Tom Williams, the Airbus Executive Vice President - Programmes, said this latest order is another demonstration of Emirates’ confidence in the A380, while also contributing to Airbus’ management of its forward production and industrial scheduling for the very large jetliner.

Etihad Airways’ booking for 87 Airbus jetliners announced at the Dubai Airshow involves the A320 and A350 XWB families along with the A330F freighter, providing capacity for this Abu Dhabi-headquartered carrier in launching new routes, increasing frequencies on its existing network and replacing older aircraft. James Hogan, the Etihad Airways President and Chief Executive Officer, said the aircraft covered by this contract will begin arriving in 2018, and the airline also placed options and purchase rights for another 30 aircraft.

An important new endorsement for Airbus’ A330-200F came from Qatar Airways’ firm order for five freighters, along with eight options. This will enable the A330-200F to become the backbone of Qatar Airways’ freighter fleet, according to CEO Akbar Al Baker.

Just as these three major Gulf operators have successfully used Airbus aircraft while developing into world-class carriers, the pattern is ready to be repeated as the latest Middle East new-start carrier – Libyan Wings – has chosen the A350 XWB and A320 to build up its route network. Libyan Wings’ service entry is planned for early next year, using two leased A320s.
