JetBlue Enhances its Transatlantic Flying with Attractive Fares and Award-Winning Service at London Gatwick Airport Just as U.S. Prepares to Open to U.K. Travelers

London Gatwick Flights Complement Heathrow Service and Implement U.S. Carrier’s Multi-Airport London Strategy for Increased Relevance in the U.K.

With Reimagined Mint® Premium Experience and Enhanced Core Service, JetBlue Redefines “Low Cost Carrier”

JetBlue Becomes the Only Airline to Fly Nonstop Between the U.S. and London Gatwick Airport

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) – New York’s Hometown Airline® – today announced it has expanded its presence in the transatlantic market with new, nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London Gatwick Airport (LGW). The first customer-carrying JetBlue flight from the U.S. touched down at Gatwick just before 8 o’clock this morning, local time. The flights – which operate four times weekly in October, then daily onward from November – arrive well timed for the long-awaited easing of U.S. entry requirements for travelers from the U.K. and other European destinations.

“With a 500% increase in JetBlue’s U.K. bookings following news of easing U.S. entry requirements for international travelers, it’s clear there is significant pent up demand for travel between our two countries and that our Gatwick launch is well timed to meet the growing number of customers returning to the skies,” said Joanna Geraghty, president and chief operating officer, JetBlue. “JetBlue’s new service at Gatwick – complemented by our recently launched flights at Heathrow – introduces an all-new choice for London travelers who won’t have to choose between an attractive fare and great service as they reunite with family, friends and colleagues on either side of the Atlantic.”

JetBlue’s arrival at Gatwick brings the U.S. airline’s award-winning service and attractive fares to a second London-area airport. In August, the carrier touched down at Heathrow, marking the start of JetBlue’s first-ever transatlantic service. With JetBlue service established at Heathrow, flights at Gatwick now bring the airline’s London service in line with JetBlue’s successful multi-airport approach in New York, Los Angeles, South Florida, and other regions, where the airline can conveniently serve a wider range of travelers across large metropolitan areas. Additionally, JetBlue is the only carrier flying nonstop between the U.S. and Gatwick, where it will bring exceptional experience and affordable fares that will redefine transatlantic travel.

“The launch of JetBlue’s service between New York and London has been a most welcomed addition to the transatlantic market, and following the recent announcements of simplified travel rules between the U.S. and the U.K., the new service to London Gatwick will provide even greater accessibility for Americans to book their next trip to Britain,” said Sheelagh Wylie, Chief Marketing Officer, Americas at VisitBritain. With the festive holiday season around the corner and an exciting year ahead full of events such as the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Coventry City of Culture and many other annual festivals and shows, we are thrilled to welcome JetBlue to its second home in London Gatwick. We look forward to safely having American visitors back to experience the finest British hospitality, our breathtaking coasts and countryside, and our world-class attractions in London and beyond.”

Greetings, Gatwick

Gatwick is the second busiest U.K. airport and provides JetBlue with an important presence where it can attract a new base of travelers. JetBlue will operate from the North Terminal, which has a range of passenger facilities including a wide variety of shops and restaurants, Kid Zones for those travelling with children and special assistance services.

Gatwick travelers benefit from a choice of convenient transport options including direct train links to the City of London via Thameslink and to Brighton and other South East Coastal communities via Southern Railway. The variety of ground transportation options at Gatwick allow JetBlue to serve a wide range of travelers bound for or returning from a variety of U.K. destinations.

“I’m delighted and excited to welcome JetBlue to Gatwick,” said Stewart Wingate, Gatwick CEO. “Travel restrictions between the U.K. and U.S. start falling away in just days, so fully vaccinated customers can now book this exciting new route with confidence. London to New York is historically the world’s most popular international route and – given JetBlue’s extremely competitive pricing and high-quality service – I expect this new route to be in high demand. Anyone thinking about booking a well-deserved Christmas break or a long overdue business trip to New York should book this new service early to avoid disappointment.”

Flights between New York-JFK and Gatwick initially operate four times per week through October and expand to daily in November on JetBlue’s new Airbus A321 Long Range (LR) aircraft with 24 redesigned Mint suites, 114 core seats and the sleek and spacious Airspace cabin interior.

Excellent Experience

JetBlue – the sixth largest airline in the U.S. – is known for having the most legroom in coach (a), live television and on-demand entertainment on every seatback, free and fast Fly-Fi broadband internet (b), complimentary snacks and soft drinks and great customer service. JetBlue’s entrance into the transatlantic market introduces a new era of customer-focused, low-fare travel for leisure and business travelers.

The airline’s Mint premium experience – which first raised the bar on transcontinental travel in the U.S. and has been completely reimagined for transatlantic flying – promises to offer customers a fresh choice when flying between the U.S. and the U.K. JetBlue Mint features 24 fully lie-flat private suites with a sliding door – including two Mint Studios™ – and a custom-designed seat cushion developed by innovative mattress company Tuft & Needle. Its proprietary T&N Adaptive® foam with a breathable cover creates a cool and comfortable sleep experience unlike anything in the sky. Mint also boasts countless intuitive design touches that help every customer feel at home in the air. JetBlue is also introducing its latest innovation – the stunning Mint Studio – offering even more space in a premium experience.

JetBlue’s industry-leading core experience has also been reinvented for crossing the pond and offers a new level of service to customers who generally fly “coach” but still want a great experience at an attractive fare. With just 114 core seats – including 24 Even More® Space Seats – customers enjoy a boutique-style experience no matter where they sit. All of the comforts JetBlue customers have come to expect is enhanced by the recently announced partnership with New York-based restaurant group Dig to bring its signature build-your-own dining concept to tray tables at 35,000 feet – JetBlue’s first complimentary meal in core. Core customers also enjoy a free selection of soft drinks, coffee, tea, beer, wine and liquor. The A321LR features new extra-large overhead bins, and all customers regardless of fare type may bring one carry on, space permitting, and one personal item.

Customers in both core and Mint stay connected throughout the flight, with JetBlue being the only airline to offer unlimited, free high-speed wi-fi on all transatlantic flights. Additionally, customers have access to a curated selection of live TV channels – focused on news and sports – and an extensive library of seatback entertainment, allowing customers to have a multiple screen experience onboard – just like they do at home.

Airbus Aircraft

The A321LR platform – offering the range of a wide-body but with the economics of a single-aisle aircraft – allows JetBlue to effectively compete, with award-winning service and low fares on flights between the U.S. and London. JetBlue converted 13 aircraft in its existing A321 order book to the LR version in April 2019 with the ability to convert more. Additionally, JetBlue has converted another 13 aircraft in its existing order book to the Extra-Long Range – or XLR – version of the A321.

The A321LR allows JetBlue to tap into new long-haul markets, like London, that were not previously accessible with the airline’s existing fleet. The LR’s range of up to 4,000 nautical miles is made possible by three additional center fuel tanks and the aircraft delivers 30 percent fuel savings and nearly 50 percent reduction in noise footprint compared to previous generations of aircraft. JetBlue is also the global launch partner for the new Airspace by Airbus cabin, bringing long-haul style to the A321 for the first time ever.

JetBlue’s A321LR is powered by two Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. The GTF engine, with its revolutionary geared fan technology, is transforming aviation by delivering game-changing economic and environmental performance. The Pratt & Whitney GTF engine also incorporates advances in aerodynamics, lightweight materials and other major technology improvements.

Eye on the Environment

JetBlue is committed to finding sustainable solutions that protect the beauty and vitality of the places it serves. Optimizing fuel burn is an important part of JetBlue’s sustainability strategy, and prioritizing fuel-efficient aircraft, engines, and flying procedures aligns with JetBlue’s approach to reducing emissions. In 2020, JetBlue became the first major U.S. airline to achieve carbon neutrality for all domestic flights, and has since announced its commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

JetBlue is proud to proactively offset the CO2 emissions from all flights to and from London throughout 2021. JetBlue is partnering with long-time partner Carbonfund.org Foundation, a leading US-based nonprofit climate solutions organization, purchasing high-quality and third-party verified carbon offsets that support the Envira Amazonia Tropical Rainforest Conservation Project. JetBlue recognizes that offsets are a meaningful yet short-term solution while the industry builds up lower carbon solutions. The airline is also investing in solutions to reduce direct emissions from operations, including sustainable aviation fuel, which is already being used by JetBlue at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Community Connections

JetBlue is partnering with two London-based non-profit organizations – Inspire! and FareShare – as part of JetBlue For Good, the airline’s platform for social impact and corporate responsibility

Inspire! is a local education charity working in the London boroughs of Hackney, Camden, Islington and beyond. Their mission is to improve young people’s access to the world of work, raise achievement levels and enhance their future career prospects and lives. Through their World of Work (WOW!) program, JetBlue crewmembers will have the opportunity to volunteer and share their career journeys and insight into the field of aviation. FareShare is the UK’s longest running food redistribution charity. In 2020, the organization supported 10,542 charities and community groups. As a result, more than 1.1 million people had access to food.

Giving back is part of JetBlue’s DNA and is core to its mission of inspiring humanity. JetBlue For Good focuses on the areas that are most important to the airline’s customers and crewmembers – community, youth/education and the environment. JetBlue makes its entrance into new communities known starting on day one. After all these communities are not only where its crewmembers work – they live here too. JetBlue is committed to creating a brighter, more just world that we are all eager, able and empowered to explore.

Boeing to Add 767-300BCF Conversion Lines at GAMECO to Meet Strong Market Demand

Boeing will open two new 767-300BCF conversion lines next year at GAMECO in Guangzhou, China

- GAMECO will be the first MRO to convert both the 737-800BCF and 767-300BCF

ZHUHAI, China, Sept. 28, 2021—Boeing and Guangzhou Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Company Limited (GAMECO) today announced plans to create additional capacity for the 767-300 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) to help meet continued strong market demand.

The agreement, revealed by the two companies during a signing ceremony at the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, will expand freighter conversion capacity at GAMECO, opening two new 767-300BCF conversion lines next year.

“It was mutually beneficial to continue building our relationship with GAMECO to provide additional conversion capacity for the 767-300BCF while supporting growth in the region,” said Peter Gao, vice president, Boeing Commercial Sales and Marketing for China. “GAMECO has demonstrated excellent execution on the 737-800BCF program. We know it will bring the same expertise and proven capability to help deliver our medium widebody freighter conversions to our global customers.”

GAMECO will be the first MRO in China to convert the 767-300BCF and the only MRO converting both the 767-300BCF and the 737-800BCF. Earlier this year, GAMECO announced plans to open a third 737-800BCF conversion line.

“GAMECO is very proud to extend its relationship with Boeing and their converted freighter program to include another aircraft type,” said Norbert Marx, general manager, GAMECO. “The introduction of the 767-300BCF program further grows GAMECO’s regional presence and enhances our strategic focus around meeting the strong customer demand. We will open the 767-300BCF conversion lines in our new hangar.”

Boeing forecasts 1,720 freighter conversions will be needed over the next 20 years. Of those, 520 will be widebody conversions with Asia carriers accounting for more than 40 percent of that demand. The 767-300BCF has more than 95 orders and commitments.

Norse Atlantic outlines maiden US route plans

By David Casey

The long-haul LCC startup is planning to open a trio of routes from Norway’s capital.

Norse Atlantic Airways has unveiled its initial network strategy, outlining plans to fly to three points in the US from the Norwegian capital Oslo.

A request has been lodged with the US Transportation Department (DOT) for an exemption and foreign carrier permit. The document says that Norse expects to receive its air operator’s certificate from Norway’s civil aviation authority Luftfartstilsynet in early November.

From Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), the transatlantic startup wants to open routes to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), New York Stewart (SWF) and Ontario (ONT) outside Los Angeles.

Although no start date has been given, Norse hopes to begin scheduled operations during the summer 2022 season. Initial flights will begin with three Boeing 787s in a two-cabin configuration.

In its application to the DOT, Norse said it plans to partner with local communities, tourism organizations, businesses and labor to bring its product to the US market and “create new, good-paying jobs for Americans.”

The airline added its flights would result in “increased travel opportunities, greater service options, and enhanced competition, thereby benefiting travelers and consumers” in Norway, the US and Europe.

Norse is seeking to avoid the union objections that Norwegian Air Shuttle faced and has vowed to act in accordance with all applicable labor laws. As part of this effort the startup has already forged agreements with two major labor unions.

In May, the Association of Flight Attendants approved a pre-hire deal for a minimum of US-based flight attendant jobs, and earlier this month an agreement was reached with the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA).

Norse’s initial network strategy is similar to that previously employed by Norwegian prior to its exit from the transatlantic market. From Oslo, the airline is targeting three big leisure destinations with large catchment areas—New York, Los Angeles and South Florida—but opting to fly to lower cost airports.

According to data provided by OAG Schedules Analyser, Norwegian served Oslo-Fort Lauderdale until the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. The LCC also flew to the Florida airport from Barcelona (BCN), Copenhagen (CPH), London Gatwick (LGW), Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) at various points in recent years.

New York Stewart was also previously on Norwegian’s route map. SWF was served from Belfast International (BFS), Bergen (BGO), Dublin (DUB), Edinburgh (EDI) and Shannon (SNN).

Should Norse launch the three routes as proposed, the latest OAG data shows that indirect competition will be provided by SAS Scandinavian Airlines, which serves Newark Liberty (EWR) from Oslo and plans to add Miami (MIA) to its schedule in November.

After launching from Oslo, Norse intends to add transatlantic service from other points in Europe, with London and Paris thought to be targets. Speaking to ATW on Sept. 23, CEO Bjorn Tore Larsen said London Heathrow (LHR) was unlikely but talks were ongoing with other London airports.

“This is a very challenging business, and it is too easy to lose money, but I think there has never been a better time to launch because we got the airplanes at very attractive terms and we got that at absolutely the low point in the market,” he said.

San Francisco Giants and Alaska Airlines' newest livery shows up in a GIANT way!

Alaska unveils Giants-themed aircraft at San Francisco International Airport (SFO); announces early boarding for guests wearing Giants apparel through postseason play

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines, the official airline partner of the San Francisco Giants, is taking postseason celebrations to new heights with the debut of its new Giants-themed livery. Just in time for the Giants' upcoming playoff run, the Airbus 320 aircraft was introduced today to fans departing San Francisco (SFO) for Seattle (SEA).

"Few things are as exciting as seeing this big, colorful giant fly across our beautiful state as we go into our playoff run. My hope is that this aircraft gives Giants fans a way to feel part of the team, every time they travel," said San Francisco Giants CEO and President Larry Baer. "Partnerships like we have with Alaska Airlines offer critical support of local community, youth and education programs like the Willie Mays Scholarship Fund and the Giants Community Fund, which in turn is helping change the lives of our youths."

This is the second livery dedicated to the San Francisco Giants. The plane, tail number N855VA, will fly throughout Alaska's network now through 2022. The new Giants-themed livery is one of many ways guests can celebrate the team's playoff run. Alaska just announced that fans who wear Giants' apparel can board early for all San Francisco departing flights for the duration of the team's postseason play.

Alaska employees dedicated the plane along with a $100,000 check to the Willie Mays Scholarship Fund, in

honor of the 'Say Hey Kid's' 90th birthday. The fund assists in making college aspirations come true for San Francisco's Black youth and empowers them to pursue their goals to achieve success in high school, college and beyond. Terminal 2 flyers were also treated to a surprise celebration complete with DJ entertainment on- site, prizes, giveaways and a visit from the Giants' mascot "Lou Seal" joining in on the festivities.

"Alaska has been a proud partner of the Giants since 2017," said Natalie Bowman, Alaska Airlines managing director of brand and marketing communications. "We're thrilled to display our Giants pride from 35,000 feet with this unique looking plane, and we wish the team the best of luck as they hopefully make a deep run in the postseason."

The Giants-inspired wrapped aircraft and early boarding are among many ways Alaska is deepening its presence in the Bay. Alaska recently unveiled a new premium Lounge at SFO. The 9,200 square feet Lounge features Bay-inspired amenities and top-notch hospitality – giving Alaska and oneworld guests a comfortable place to work and relax. The Lounge also features the first and only co-branded professional sports-themed Lounge space in the country. A treat for young Giants fans, the space includes a children's play area featuring baseball-themed games and art celebrating mascot Lou Seal.

San Francisco is Alaska Airlines' third largest hub. With 108 daily flights to 39 destinations to and from San Francisco, go ahead and cross something off the wander-list today with Alaska including popular flights to Maui, Cabo, Anchorage and San Diego. Starting Dec. 18, sun seekers can escape winter doldrums and enjoy three new nonstop destinations south of the border from SFO – Loreto, Mazatlán and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.

Qatar Airways A380 returns

Speaking to executivetraveller.com, the CEO of Qatar Airways has said it will return the A380 to active duty in November. The airline is doing this to replace the capacity lost by the grounding of thirteen of its A350s as well as an increase of demand. Initially, the airline is set to reactivate five of its ten A380s but the whole fleet could fly again in 2022 depending on the development of market conditions.

Over the last year, the CEO of Qatar Airways has been quite bullish on the future of its A380s saying that the aircraft was one of the biggest mistakes of the airline as well as environmentally not the best aircraft. However, in the interview with the website, the CEO said the grounding of the A350s due to fuselage degradation wasn't foreseen and changed the situation in a dramatic way.

In the coming weeks, Qatar Airways will rehire its A380-pilots which were laid-off when the A380s were parked for an indefinite period. The pilots will need to train to regain their currency which also includes (empty) A380-flights. At the same time, Qatar has started the necessary steps to check and perform maintenance on the five A380s to return them to duty.

Airbus delivers first of 60 A220s to Air France

Air France has received its first A220-300 from an order for 60 aircraft of the type, the largest A220 order from a European carrier. The aircraft was delivered from Airbus’ final assembly line in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada and officially unveiled to the public during a ceremony held at Paris Charles-De-Gaulle Airport.

The A220 is the most efficient and flexible aircraft in the 100 to 150 seat market segment today. The renewal of the Air France single-aisle fleet with this latest generation aircraft will increase efficiency along with customer comfort and support Air France to meet its environmental goals and sustainability objectives.

The first Air France A220-300 will be operated on its medium-haul network from the 2021 winter season. Currently, Air France operates a fleet of 136 Airbus aircraft. Air France is also renewing its long-haul fleet, and has already taken delivery of 11 A350s out of an order of 38.

The Air France A220-300 cabin is configured in a single-class layout to comfortably welcome 148 passengers. Offering superior single-aisle comfort, with the widest leather seats, largest windows and up to 20% more overhead stowage space per passenger, the Air France A220 also features full WiFi connectivity throughout the cabin and two USB sockets at each passenger seat.

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation geared turbofan engines. With a range of up to 3,450 nm (6,390 km), the A220 gives airlines added operational flexibility. The A220 delivers up to 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. In addition, the aircraft noise footprint is reduced by 50% compared to previous generation aircraft - making the A220 a good neighbour around airports.

As of the end of August, over 170 A220s have been delivered to 11 operators worldwide.

Emirates to convert B777-300ERs

Air Finance Journal is reporting that Emirates has signed an agreement with IAI to convert five of its B777-300ERs into B777-300ERSFs. The five will be converted at IAI's new conversion-line it set-up with Etihad in Abu Dhabi.

During the COVID-pandemic, Emirates utilised multiple of its B777-300ERs in a "phreighter"-configuration and already considered a permanent conversion as the type would fit in very nicely into the airline's network. It's currently unclear which five airframes are involved of its 124-strong B777-300ER fleet.

IAI is working to certification of the B777-300ERSF in 2023, with delivery to launch customer Kalitta in the same year.

Afghan carriers resume flights; foreign operators cautious

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has given Kam Air (RQ, Kabul) the greenlight to start commercial flights to Islamabad Quaid-e-Azam Int'l in Pakistan, local media have reported citing a PCAA document.

Following a letter from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Transport in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the PCAA decided to award the privately-owned Afghan carrier 3x weekly rights to the Pakistani capital gateway. Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows that as of September 22, Kam Air has already resumed operating the route on a scheduled basis using B737-300s.

Aside from Pakistan, Kam Air is currently running flights (both scheduled and charter) to Mazar i Sharif domestically, Tbilisi (Georgia), and Abu Dhabi Int'l. Both of Kam Air's A340-300s are also active on commercial flights into and out of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

State-owned Ariana Afghan Airlines (FG, Kabul) is also active with one B737-400 while sister carrier Bakhtar Afghan Airlines (BM, Kabul) is also using its sole B737-500.

On Sunday, September 26, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked foreign airlines to resume commercial flights to and from Kabul, saying that all technical problems at the capital’s airport had been resolved and that the facility “is fully operational.”

As of September 21, NOTAMs for Kabul report the airfield to be open to domestic and international flights but only between 0130Z (0600L) and 1330Z (1800L). Primary and secondary surveillance radars are available with air traffic services also available once more. However, the VOR is currently out of order.

According to the VOA Pashto service, the absence of any large-scale scheduled services to Afghanistan have seen the cost of flights skyrocket, leading to the Taliban's appeal. So far, aside from a handful of PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad Quaid-e-Azam Int'l) charters, no foreign carrier has yet committed to returning to Kabul on a regular basis.
