China Airlines has added another link to Australia and New Zealand with the launch on 25 October of a new thrice-weekly service from Taipei Taoyuan to Melbourne with onward service to Christchurch

The 7,395-kilometre route to Melbourne will be operated by the airline’s A330-300s and is not served by any other airline. However, the 2,411-kilometre Melbourne to Christchurch sector, on which the airline has traffic rights, is already served by Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia Airlines with daily flights, and by Jetstar Airways with six weekly flights. China Airlines already operates a Taipei-Sydney-Christchurch service as well as serving Brisbane and Auckland. The new service departs Taipei at 22:30 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays arriving in Melbourne at 11:50 the following day. At 13:10 it then departs Melbourne arriving in Christchurch at 18:30. Lyell Strambi, Chief Executive, Melbourne Airport welcomed China Airlines President Chang Yu-Hern, who was on the inaugural flight along with a number of the board members, to Melbourne. “Attracting new international services such as China Airlines provides exciting new opportunities for Victoria’s tourism industry, as well as strengthening our business, trade and education connections with Taiwan,” Strambi said in a statement. In addition to this new long-haul service, China Airlines also launched new flights from Kaohsiung (KHH) to Fukuoka (FUK) and Kumamoto (KMJ) in Japan. The former will be served twice-weekly and faces competition from EVA Air, while the latter will be served thrice-weekly and faces no competition. Both routes will be operated by the airline’s 737-800s

Metrojet crash over Sinai is third Airbus A321-200 hull loss

The Oct. 31 crash of Metrojet flight 9268, now confirmed by Airbus, was only the third hull loss of an Airbus A321-200 and the worst accident so far involving the type.

"Airbus regrets to confirm that an A321-200 operated by Metrojet was involved in an accident shortly after 6:17 local time (04:17 GMT) over the Sinai Peninsula today. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight 7K-9268 from Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) to St. Petersburg (Russia)," Airbus said in a statement.

The European manufacturer confirmed the identify of the aircraft as tail number EI-ETJ (MSN663), powered by IAE-V2500s. It was produced in 1997 and has been operated by Metrojet since 2012, accumulating 56,000 flight hours and nearly 21,000 sectors since its original entry into service.

"In line with ICAO annex 13, an Airbus go-team of technical advisors stands-by ready to provide full technical assistance to French investigation agency – BEA – and to the authorities in charge of the investigation," Airbus said.

The Russian embassy in Cairo has reportedly said there are no survivors among the 224 people on board.

Flight 7K-9268 took off from Sharm el Sheikh airport at 5.49 a.m. local time. The aircraft appeared to be climbing steadily towards its cruising altitude with no unusual speed deviations noticeable until 06.13 a.m. when it was crossing the Sinai peninsula. About one minute before radar contact was lost, massive speed and altitude changes were traced. According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, the last recorded speed was 92 knots at an altitude of 28,375 ft.

An Egyptian official claimed the crew had declared an emergency because of unspecified technical problems and requested diversion to the nearest airport. The Egyptian government was fast in ruling out a terrorist attack.

The aircraft was originally delivered to Middle East Airlines on lease from ILFC and later operated for Onur Air, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Kolavia. Its last operator, Kogalymavia, operates under the Metrojet brand and is based in Kogalym. The carrier specializes in international charter flying. Among others, it operates another three Airbus A321-200s.

In 2010 an Airblue A321 crashed into the side of a mountain during a poor weather approach to Islamabad. All 152 on board died. The only other A321 hull losses affected a TransAsia Airways A321-100. The aircraft, delivered in 1996, hit a utility vehicle on the runway while landing in Tainan/Taiwan injuring two construction workers. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.

Other recent A320 family accidents include the Dec. 28, 2014, crash of Indonesia AirAsia flight 8501 for which major speed and altitude fluctuations were reported before contact was lost. There have been 34 hull losses for the A320 family, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

Airbus to boost A320 production to 60 a month in mid-2019

Ongoing high demand for world’s leading Single Aisle aircraft

To match ongoing high demand for its bestselling A320 Family, Airbus has taken the decision to further increase the production rate of the Single Aisle Family to 60 aircraft a month in mid-2019. The decision follows thorough studies on production ramp-up readiness in the supply chain and in Airbus sites to allow the ramp-up.

To enable the ramp-up Airbus will extend its capacity in Hamburg with the creation of an additional production line. In parallel Airbus will integrate cabin furnishing activities for A320 aircraft produced in Toulouse into the Final Assembly Line in Toulouse, and thereby harmonising the production process across all A320 Family Final Assembly Lines worldwide.

“The growing Single Aisle demand and impressive backlog for both CEOs and NEOs led us to decide on a further ramp-up,” said Didier Evrard, Executive Vice President Programmes. “I am confident that we have the highest skilled teams and the right solutions in place to gradually move to the highest production rate ever achieved in civil aviation history.”

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with over 12,200 orders since launch and more than 6,700 aircraft delivered to more than 300 operators worldwide. Thanks to their widest cabin, all members of the A320 Family offer unmatched comfort in all classes and Airbus’ 18” wide seats in economy as standard. With one aircraft in four sizes (A318, A319, A320 & A321), the A320 Family, seating from 100 to 240 passengers, seamlessly covers the entire single-aisle segment from low to high-density domestic to longer range routes.

The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020 with further cabin innovations. With over 4,300 orders received from more than 75 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured almost 60 percent share of the market.

China Aviation Supplies Holding Company orders 30 A330 Family and 100 A320 Family aircraft

A great endorsement for the world’s leading versatile wide-body A330 and the best-selling single aisle A320 Family aircraft

China Aviation Supplies Holding Company (CAS) has signed a General Terms Agreement (GTA) with Airbus for the acquisition of 30 A330 Family aircraft and 100 A320 Family aircraft. The 30 A330s are the firm up of the commitment signed in June 2015. The GTA was signed in Beijing by Li Hai, President and CEO of CAS, and Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO of Airbus, in the presence of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“We are grateful to CAS, one of our longest standing customers, for its continued confidence in Airbus and in the versatile A330 Family as well as the best-selling A320 Family,” said Fabrice Bregier, President and CEO of Airbus. “With these 30 A330 options now firmed up, CAS’ total number of orders for the popular Airbus widebody is this year 75 aircraft. This strong demand in China for the A330 has been the key driver behind our decision to set up an A330 Completion and Delivery Centre in Tianjin, China next to the A320 Family final assembly line and delivery centre in Tianjin, which has assembled and delivered more than 240 Airbus single aisle aircraft. This will enable us to be even closer to our customers and to take our long-standing mutual beneficial partnership with China to a new height.”

The first agreements on setting up an A330 C&DC in Tianjin, China were signed by Airbus and Chinese partners in March 2014 and witnessed by French President Francois Hollande and visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping. This was followed in October 2014, when Airbus, the Tianjin Free Trade Zone (TJFTZ) and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) in Berlin, Germany, in the presence of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, A framework agreement was signed in July 2015 in Toulouse.

The A330 family seats between 250 and 440 passengers and is one of the most efficient aircraft in the world, with the lowest operating costs in its category.
