Wings of the historic Lockheed Super Star arrive in Frankfurt

Following the fuselage, the wings of the legendary Lockheed L-1649A “Super Star” have now also arrived in Frankfurt. Each imposing wing measures 22 meters in length and, together with its transport frame, weighs eight tons. With its total length of around 35 meters and an impressive wingspan of more than 45 meters, the iconic 1950s Super Star can soon shine again as a complete aircraft. Its future home will be the new Lufthansa Group Conference & Visitor Center (CVC) in Frankfurt am Main.

Transporting the wings posed an extraordinary challenge for the experts at Gruber Logistics. The wings were already fully assembled. Ailerons, flaps with lower and fairing structures, engine nacelles, landing gear, and so-called nose boxes were all installed, which increased the transport width to 6.40 meters. Obtaining permits and planning the route therefore required exceptionally precise preparation.

Loading and unloading involved two twelve-ton forklifts that had to work in perfect synchronization to keep the delicate wings balanced. With the center of gravity located in the wing box, the forklifts simultaneously lifted the balanced wings millimeter by millimeter—a masterstroke of precision.

With the arrival of the wings, the iconic long-range aircraft from the 1950s will soon regain its characteristic appearance at the CVC. The Super Star will be on display and accessible to visitors in its new home, just in time for the airline’s 100th anniversary.

FLEET - Samoa Airways to refurb Twin Otter after profitability swing

Samoa Airways (OL, Apia Faleolo) will send a second DHC-6-300 for extensive refurbishment to Canada later this year. This follows the airline's swing to profitability after eight years of consecutive losses.

The carrier told local media that the maintenance of the Twin Otter would take it off the fleet until February 2026. Samoa Airways plans to spend WST10 million tala (USD3.7 million) on the refit.

The airline completed the refurbishment of the youngest of its three Twin Otters, 5W-FAW (msn 827), to much fanfare in March 2025. The 40-year-old aircraft is currently in service on the airline's most profitable routes connecting the two airports in the Samoan capital, Apia Fagali'i and Apia Faleolo, with Pago Pago in nearby American Samoa.

The other two Twin Otters in Samoa Airways' fleet are 45.3-year-old 5W-FAY (msn 690) and 51.6-year-old 5W-STF (msn 402). The former has been parked at Apia Faleolo since August 13, 2025.

The fleet refit follows Samoa Airways' historically good financial year. After eight years of losses, the airline posted a net profit of WST11 million (USD4.1 million) for the year ended June 30, 2025. Its debt decreased from WST80 million (USD29.9 million) to WST10 million (USD3.7 million), largely thanks to two government handouts: a write-off of a WST55 million (USD20.5 million) loan from the Unit Trust of Samoa and WST11 million (USD4.1 million) in direct aid to repay old debts.

Besides the route connecting Samoa and American Samoa, the airline also operates within American Samoa, connecting Pago Pago with Fitiuta and Ofu in the Manu'a Islands. Samoa Airways is currently authorised to operate this eighth-freedom cabotage route through January 2026, or until a US-domiciled carrier decides to enter the market.

ORDER - Korean Air orders 103 Boeing aircraft, including B777-8Fs Support

Photo: Ton Jochems - AMS

Korean Air (KE, Seoul Incheon) plans to order 103 new Boeing aircraft, including its first-ever commitment for B777-8F freighters. The deal, announced during the visit of South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung to the United States, also includes more B777-9s, B787-10s, and B737-10s.

The carrier plans to order eight B777-8Fs. It will be its first order for any new-generation widebody twinjet freighters. Its cargo fleet currently comprises four B747-400ERFs, seven B747-8Fs, and twelve B777-200Fs. Its subsidiary Asiana Airlines no longer operates dedicated freighters following the sale of its cargo business to AirZeta.

Korean Air also plans to add twenty B777-9s to its existing order for 20 units of the type, placed in March 2025. The new commitment will also include an additional twenty-five B787-10s, which will come on top of the current unfilled order for six B787-9s and twenty-seven -10s.

In addition, it plans to take fifty incremental B737-10s, complementing its existing unfilled order for nineteen B737 MAX. While Korean Air initially planned to take exclusively B737-8s, it recently converted 12 orders to the -10s.

All newly announced aircraft orders are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2030. In total, they will increase Korean Air's orderbook with Boeing from the current 72 unfilled commitments to 175. The new deal marks the largest single order placed with Boeing by an Asian carrier.

Korean Air's current Boeing fleet comprises six B737-8s, two B737-800s, nine B737-900s, six B737-900ERs, four B747-400ERFs, five B747-8s, seven B747-8Fs, five inactive B777-200ERs, twelve B777-200Fs, four B777-300s, twenty-five B777-300ERs, fourteen B787-9s, and ten B787-10s. The airline also operates one B737-700(BBJ) and one B787-8(BBJ) for the government. Asiana Airlines' only Boeing aircraft are nine B777-200ERs, while LCC subsidiaries Jin Air operates five B737-8s, nineteen B737-800s, three B737-900s, and four B777-200ERs.

Korean Air will also buy 11 spare engines from General Electric and eight from CFM International

FLEET - RwandAir to expand fleet to 21 aircraft by 2029

RwandAir (WB, Kigali) plans to expand its fleet from 14 to at least 21 aircraft by 2029 and, through network growth and strengthened strategic partnerships, more than double its annual passenger numbers to 2.1 million as outlined in the country's Transport Sector Strategic Plan 2024-2029.

This will involve acquiring more A330s for long-haul routes, B737-800s for regional and medium-haul destinations, and DHC-8-Q400s for shorter domestic routes, chief commercial officer Fouad Caunhye told Rwanda's The New Times newspaper in an interview.

He said the national carrier is also reinforcing its fleet in 2025/26 with three aircraft - two B737-800s and one A330-200 - to restore capacity after recent technical issues sidelined several units. "These additions will give us the flexibility we need to pursue the route expansions that were previously put on hold," he declared. It is not immediately clear if these units will be bought, dry-or wet-leased.
He acknowledged recent operational disruptions linked to temporary fleet capacity constraints."We have faced some operational disruptions recently because of the capacity issues I mentioned. Our immediate priority is to stabilise and optimise our performance across our existing network. With the new aircraft joining the fleet, we will be able to improve scheduling and reliability, which will provide a strong foundation for adding more destinations in the future," Caunhye said.
RwandAir current fleet of 14 aircraft includes three A330s (two A330-200s and one A330-300), six B737-800s, one B737-800(SF), two CRJ900ERs, and two -Q400s.
Alongside fleet growth, Caunhye said RwandAir plans to increase its route network from 23 destinations to 29 by 2028/29. New services to Mombasa (Kenya) and Zanzibar (Tanzania) are scheduled, while frequencies to London Heathrow and Dubai International are being increased, and flights to Guangzhou (China) may be resumed. The carrier is also positioning Kigali as a regional hub, supported by a new airport under construction.
Regarding strategic partnerships, the airline continues to deepen ties with Qatar Airways and is in advanced talks with the Qatar Investment Authority over a potential equity stake. Codeshare and loyalty programme integrations with other African carriers are also under development.
According to the Transport Sector Strategic Plan 2024-2029, the Rwandan government is committed to developing air transport through bilateral air service agreements with different countries and the construction of high-capacity airports to accommodate high volumes of passengers and goods.
In line with the strategic plan, the passenger handling capacity of Rwandan airports is expected to increase from two million to slightly over 8.2 million passengers per annum by 2029. Air freight volumes are to grow from 16,304 to 32,987 metric tonnes.

SPECIAL LIVERY - Air Niugini Unveils Commemorative Livery on the First Airbus A220, Celebrating PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary

Air Niugini is thrilled to unveil a special commemorative livery on its first Airbus A220, marking a significant milestone in both the airline’s history and Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

The brand-new aircraft, affectionately dubbed the “People’s Balus,” features a vibrant livery that incorporates Papua New Guinea’s national flag and the official 50th Independence Anniversary logo. This unique livery serves as a flying tribute to the nation’s rich heritage and bright future, proudly showcasing the colours of Papua New Guinea both domestically and around the region.

The intricate painting process was meticulously carried out at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada. A dedicated team of 120 painters worked tirelessly over three shifts, 24/7 to bring the design to life, utilizing eleven distinct colours and employing special airbrushing and advanced stencil overlay techniques to achieve the complex layering effect. This innovative approach marks only the second time Airbus has applied such a technique on an A220 aircraft, setting new standards for aircraft livery design and implementation.
Air Niugini Acting CEO Captain Samiu Taufa, MBE stated, “This aircraft is more than just a new addition to our fleet, it is our first brand new, next generation jet aircraft and captures the spirit of our nation and our aspirations for the future. As we celebrate 50 years of independence, the ‘People’s Balus’ stands as a testament to our journey and our commitment to progress.”
The Airbus A220 comes in two variants — the A220-100 (seating 113 passengers) and the larger A220-300 (seating 138 passengers). Powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and with advanced aerodynamics, the A220 delivers approximately 25 % lower fuel burn per seat and 50 % less noise footprint than the older generation aircraft it will replace. Its cabin offers an exceptional and comfortable inflight experience – featuring wide seats, extra-large windows, spacious overhead bins, free wifi, and a quiet, well-lit environment.
The aircraft currently carries the Canadian test registration, C-FOWU, however following the completion of PNG CASA registration requirements, the People’s Balus will be registered P2-PGA. This be followed by the issuing of a PNG Certificate of Airworthiness. The aircraft will be flown from Mirabel to Port Moresby.
With the introduction of this aircraft, Air Niugini embarks on an exciting new era of modernization, focused on gradually phasing out the older generation Fokker fleet, and eventually the Boeing 737 aircraft as well, whilst enhancing connectivity and service reliability across the country and the region. Air Niugini has ordered a total of eleven A220s as part of its fleet modernization program. Three aircraft will be delivered by the end of this year, with the remaining aircraft arriving over the next three years
The first “People’s Balus” is scheduled to arrive in Port Moresby in September, aligning perfectly with the country’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations. Air Niugini invites all Papua New Guineans to share in this historic moment as the aircraft takes to the skies, embodying the pride and unity of our nation.

Mexicana (XN, México City Felipe Angeles) has said it will be ready to end the wet-lease agreements for three B737-800s from Mexico’s armed air forces (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana) in December 2025, after receiving a fourth and a fifth E195-E2s directly from manufacturer Embraer late in the year.

The announcement was made after Mexicana received its third E195-E2, XA-MXC (msn 19020193), which was ferried from São José dos Campos U.E. Mexicana still expects to receive seven more E195-E2s and ten E190-E2s as part of its fleet growth plan.

Bridges Air Cargo, part of Bridges Worldwide, has taken delivery of the world’s first Embraer E190F, marking the debut of the Brazilian manufacturer’s passenger-to-freighter (P2F) programme.

The Malta-based carrier, which partners with global logistics giants such as FedEx, DHL, and UPS, will soon induct the converted aircraft—originally built in 2010 and now registered as 9H-BRD—into service, with additional E190Fs on the way as part of its fleet expansion.

ROUTES - Qantas to Replace A380 with A350-1000 Starting Early 2030

Australian carrier to introduce Airbus A350-1000 on key international routes as Singapore and Los Angeles

Qantas is set to introduce the Airbus A350-1000 on select international routes, marking the gradual retirement of its Airbus A380-800 fleet. Services to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will commence in early 2030, according to the Australian carrier.

Currently, Qantas operates 10 A380 aircraft on various routes, including Sydney to London and Los Angeles. The transition to the A350-1000 is expected to start from fiscal year 2032, with the new aircraft serving as the airline’s flagship for ultra-long-haul flights.

The A350-1000 features a reduced capacity of 238 seats compared to the A380’s 485, reflecting a design focused on comfort and premium travel. This change is anticipated to align with the strong demand for nonstop services, particularly on routes connecting Australia with Europe and North America.

Qantas fleet of A350-1000 will reach 24 aircraft (Airbus)

The introduction of the A350 will facilitate direct flights that significantly reduce travel time compared to current one-stop itineraries, appealing to both business and leisure travelers.

Qantas’s A350-1000s will be configured to enhance passenger experience, with the Project Sunrise initiative maintaining a full-service layout that includes updated first-class and premium economy cabins. However, the previously planned ‘Wellbeing Zone’ has been removed, and the airline will increase economy seating to optimize revenue.

Qantas aims to be a leading operator of nonstop flights between Australia and major destinations in Europe and North America by 2030, reinforcing its position in the ultra-long-haul segment.

FLEET - Kenyan start-up Fly Mara wet-leases A321-P2F freighter

Fly Mara Airlines (Nairobi Wilson) is wet-leasing an A321-200(P2F) from Sky Vision Airlines (SE, Cairo International) after the Kenyan startup obtained an air operator's certificate (AOC) in January 2025, according to ch-aviation research.

ADS-B data shows the 21.3-year-old SU-SKF (msn 2247), arrived in Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta from Cairo International on August 19. The freighter has a maximum payload of 25 tons and will serve clients across the Gulf, Europe, and Africa from Nairobi, announced Egypt's Go Charter, which brokered the deal. The six-month wet lease includes an option to extend, a spokesman for Go Charter confirmed.

FLEET - Kenya's Jambojet positions itself as Q400 MRO specialist

Kenyan low-cost carrier Jambojet (JM, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) is expanding its in-house maintenance capabilities for its fleet of nine leased DHC-8-Q400s, aiming to position itself as a regional specialist while tackling global supply chain disruptions, reports Aviation Week.

The Kenya Airways subsidiary expects to grow its fleet to 11 aircraft by early 2026 and to 16 by 2029, according to CEO Karanja Ndegwa. The latest unit, the 10.5-year-old 5Y-JXA (msn 4491), joined the fleet in June 2025 on lease from Abu Dhabi Aviation, ch-aviation data reveals.

Ndegwa said the airline had gained certification to perform both line and base maintenance, adding heavy checks in 2024. It is now completing its second in-house C check, with a third scheduled before the end of September.

The shift is part of a strategy to lower costs, build technical capacity, and eventually generate revenue. Jambojet plans to offer third-party maintenance focused exclusively on the Q400 beginning in 2026, Ndegwa said.

But the effort faces challenges, including parts shortages and long engine shop delays that have forced the airline to lease engines. Ndegwa said turnaround times for some components have stretched from 24 hours to nearly a week, while engines now take an average of 250 days.

To support its long-term ambitions, Jambojet is investing in component shop capabilities and scaling infrastructure in line with fleet growth. Ndegwa said the goal is to establish consistency in heavy checks before pursuing external work.

He added that the strategy could provide a model for other African carriers grappling with high costs and spares shortages. "If we are able to manage this in the very best way, it will be a game changer," he said.
