The Lufthansa Group is considering replacing Austrian Airlines' current long-haul fleet with new Boeing B787s.

According to AeroTelegraph, the Lufthansa Group is considering replacing Austrian Airlines' current long-haul fleet with new Boeing B787s. The Dreamliners could come from an additional order for the type, as the Group is in talks with Boeing about new aircraft as part of its compensation for the delay of the new B777-9s. The Lufthansa Group CEO said more aircraft is better than money when it comes to pay.

Austrian Airlines' long-haul fleet consists of three B767-300ERs and six B777-200ERs, all over 22 years old and increasingly expensive to maintain. The idea is to replace the two types with the B787, simplifying the airline's fleet, which still comprises 29 Airbus A320s, two A320neos, six A321s and seventeen ERJ195s.

The Lufthansa Group took delivery of its first two B787-9s in August and October 2022, both operated by Lufthansa. There are 28 more B787-9s on order.
