Spirit Airlines signs MoU for up to 100 A320neo Family aircraft

Airbus and Spirit Airlines have agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding for the U.S.-based airline to acquire up to 100 A320neo Family aircraft. Spirit announced its intention to place firm orders for a mix of A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo to meet its future fleet requirements.

“This new order represents another milestone for Spirit,” said Spirit Airlines’ President and CEO Ted Christie. “The additional aircraft will be used to support Spirit’s growth as we add new destinations and expand our network across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. We look forward to working with our valued partners at Airbus to finalise our agreement.”

“The Airbus A320 Family has been a strong platform for the remarkable success of Spirit over the past several years,” said Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer. “The ongoing, enthusiastic spirit the airline demonstrates in our A320neo Family is most rewarding, and we look forward to playing a part in the Spirit team’s continued growth for many, many years to come.”

Spirit is a fast growing ultra-low-cost carrier in the Americas, based in South Florida.

Featuring the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, the best-selling A320neo Family, comprising the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo, deliver at least 20% reduced fuel burn as well as 50% less noise compared to previous-generation aircraft, thanks to incorporating the very latest technologies including new-generation engines and Sharklets. At the end of September 2019, the A320neo Family had received more than 6,650 firm orders from nearly 110 customers worldwide.

Czech Airlines orders 4 A220 and upsizes 3 A320neo to A321XLR

Czech Airlines has ordered four Airbus A220-300 aircraft and opted for additional range by upsizing a previous order for three A320neo to A321XLR.

The two fuel-efficient aircraft types will complement Czech Airlines’ existing fleet of six A319 and one A330-300, and allow it to continue extending its network to reach more markets. The airline will also benefit from the commonality of Airbus Family aircraft. The A220-300 will be fitted with 149 seats, while the A321XLR will cater for top comfort in a two-class layout with 195 seats.

“The A220 and A321XLR fit well with our long-term business strategy in terms of network expansion. These aircraft will definitely give Czech Airlines a competitive advantage, and will increase the capacity of our regular flights. I believe that this step will be appreciated by our passengers, as the aircraft offer best in class comfort even during long haul flights thanks to a brand new cabin configuration,” said Petr Kudela, Chairman of the Board of Czech Airlines.

“What a winning combination for Czech Airlines! The A220 has proved to be a strong performer in Europe with its high daily utilisation being a testament to its versatility,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer. “The A321XLR has the longest range of our A320 Family. Passengers can now fly further without compromising on comfort, whilst Czech Airlines benefits from remarkably lower fuel consumption as it expands its network.”

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market; it delivers unbeatable fuel efficiency and wide-body passenger comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to offer at least a 20 percent lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, along with significantly lower emissions and a reduced noise footprint. The A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft. The A220 had an order book of over 525 aircraft at the end of September 2019.

The A321XLR is the next evolutionary step from the A321LR which responds to market needs for even more range and payload, creating more value for the airlines. From 2023, it will deliver an unprecedented Xtra Long Range of up to 4,700nm – with 30 percent lower fuel burn per seat compared with previous generation competitor aircraft. To date, the A320neo Family has captured more than 6,650 orders from nearly 110 customers.

Airbus launches A220 demonstration tour of the Pacific region

Airbus has launched an extensive tour of the Pacific region to showcase the A220, its latest family member. The aircraft being used for the tour is an A220-300 leased from Latvia’s airBaltic, which will visit nine destinations in seven countries. These will include three stops in Asia on the return journey to Europe.

The first stop of the tour will be the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, home to the region’s A220 launch customer Air Vanuatu. The aircraft will then visit Australia (Sydney and Brisbane), New Zealand (Auckland), New Caledonia (Noumea) and Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby). On the way back to Europe, the aircraft will stop in Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and India (Bangalore and New Delhi).

Static displays are planned at each stop, as well as demonstration flights for airline executives and other invited guests.

The A220 is the only new design aircraft in the 100-150 seat market and incorporates state-of-the-art technologies, the latest aerodynamic design and new-generation engines. Together, these advances generate fuel savings of at least 20% compared with older-generation aircraft of a similar size.

In addition, the A220 offers extended range capability of up to 3,400 nautical miles. This makes the aircraft especially suitable for the kind of operations seen in the Pacific region, including short- to medium-haul operations between the various island nations, as well as longer routes to Australia and New Zealand.

The airBaltic A220-300 is fitted with a single-class passenger cabin with 145 seats. As on all A220 aircraft, the layout comprises three seats on one side of the aisle and two on the other. The cabin is the largest in its size category, with wider economy class seats and spacious overhead storage bins.

The A220 is available in two versions, with the A220-100 seating between 100 and 130 passengers and the larger A220-300 seating between 130 and 160 in typical airline layouts. At the end of September 2019, customers worldwide had placed orders for 525 A220 aircraft with 90 already in service with six operators.

Mitsubishi's SpaceJet deliveries face new delay

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation (MAJ, Nagoya Chubu) is seeking a sixth postponement in deliveries of its SpaceJet regional passenger aircraft, according to the financial newspaper Nikkei, with a new target date to be set in November.

The Japanese manufacturer is reportedly fighting delays in securing regulatory certification. The first SpaceJet M90/MRJ90 was scheduled for delivery to launch customer ANA - All Nippon Airways (NH, Tokyo Haneda) in mid-2020, but now a likely option is a six-month delay from that date.

The aircraft, which was renamed from the Mitsubishi Regional Jet to the SpaceJet in June, was expected to breathe new life into Japan's dormant commercial aviation sector. It was originally supposed to enter service in 2013. Now entry into service will probably be pushed beyond the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The latest holdup will come two years after Mitsubishi's previous schedule revision. ANA, Japan's largest airline by revenue, is likely to start seeking compensation for the delay, Nikkei said.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the manufacturer's biggest shareholder, told the Tokyo Stock Exchange on October 21 that Mitsubishi Aircraft was putting its "utmost effort" into completing certification.

IAI partners GECAS for B777-300(ER) P2F line

Israel Aerospace Industries (Tel Aviv Ben Gurion) has partnered GECAS for the launch of the first B777-300(ER) P2F-converted freighter line.

Under the "Big Twin" deal, IAI said GECAS had committed to 15 firm converted aircraft, with an option for 15 more. The Israeli firm will undertake the conversions itself with deliveries expected to start in 2022.

The conversion of initial aircraft is expected to take place in Tel Aviv Ben Gurion with additional conversion lines contemplated in other locations outside of Israel from 2023.

"At long last, the renowned capability of the B777-300(ER) comes to freighter operators," the lessor said.

"As the next generation of long-haul, large-capacity widebody freighters, The Big Twin will offer operators 25% more capacity than today’s smaller twin-engined long-haul freighters and it is anticipated that the Big Twin will achieve up to 21% lower fuel-burn per tonne than ageing 4-engine freighters. Entering service in 2022, the B777-300(ERSF) is expected to provide 'best in class' economics, superb range, outstanding flexible freighter capabilities — especially for express and e-commerce operators — and all with renowned B777 commonality, capability and reliability."

The Program will also see IAI enter into conversion agreements for the B777-300(ERSF) directly with airlines as well as other lessors around the world.

Garuda Indonesia to lease two B737-800 freighters from GECAS

Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has entered into a lease agreement with GECAS for two B737-800 Boeing-converted freighters (BCF).

The P2F-converted aircraft are slated to be phased in around mid-2020 and will provide additional capacity to Cargo Garuda Indonesia, the Indonesian National carrier’s strategic business unit.

At present, the carrier uses three B737-300(F)s from My Indo Airlines (2Y, Jakarta Halim).

As previously reported, Garuda intends to place eight dedicated freighters with resurgent carrier Merpati (MNA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) in 2020 including two ex-Citilink (QG, Surabaya) ATR72s and at least one A330 freighter. Collectively, the jets will be deployed to Indonesia's Papua province.
