ROUTES - CABO VERDE AIRLINES FILES ILHA DO SAL – BARCELONA SCHEDULE IN 3Q24

Cabo Verde Airlines from late-July 2024 intends to offer service to Spain, as the airline filed operational schedule on Ilha do Sal – Barcelona route. From 30JUL24 to 27AUG24, Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to operate this route on weekly basis. Based on schedule listing in the OAG, the carrier last served Barcelona until September 2012.

FLEET - VIETNAM AIRLINES RECEIVES NEW A320NEO AIRCRAFT

Vietnam Airlines has taken delivery of an A320neo – the first of three aircraft types the airline will receive this year. The airline described the delivery as an “important addition” given the global aircraft shortage due to engine recalls, and noted that the introduction of the A320neo

FLEET - New Biman Bangladesh CEO mulls major fleet expansion

The newly appointed MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) has plans to grow the fleet from the present 21 aircraft to 47 over the next 11 years, requiring a major investment in new aircraft.

Mohammad Jahidul Islam Bhuiyan, appointed to the top job in May, says his planned expansion will require an additional 32 aircraft.

"Biman needs a total of 47 aircraft for route expansion by 2035," he told The Dhaka Tribune on June 30. "Of the 21 aircraft currently in the fleet, six will be phased out by then."

While Biman's board recently approved the acquisition of four A350-900s after securing funding from the UK's Export Finance scheme, Bhuiyan said Boeing aircraft were also under consideration. "Biman's discussion with Airbus has progressed significantly," he said. "Boeing has also offered its aircraft to Biman. We will review Boeing's proposal. We need them both."

Biman's existing fleet consists of six B737-800s, four B777-300ERs, four B787-8s, two B787-9s, and five DHC-8-Q400s. The airline flies to 33 airports in 17 countries. Bhuiyan said he was keen to open several new routes, including to Malé, Kunming Changshui, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, Seoul Incheon, and Sydney Kingsford Smith.

FLEET - Uzbekistan’s My Freighter to double B767-300BCF fleet

My Freighter (C6, Tashkent International) has signed a lease agreement with Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) for two additional B767-300ER(BCF)s, increasing its overall freighter-dedicated fleet to five aircraft, ch-aviation research has learned.

ADS-B data shows that both airframes, N230CM (msn 25583) and N274CM (msn 25587), are currently stored in Wilmington Air Park. They are owned and managed by ATSG subsidiary Cargo Aircraft Management.

US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records show both planes have already been deregistered and are set to be exported to Uzbekistan where N274CM will arrive on July 7 and become UK67018. Meanwhile, N230CM will become UK67017 and is expected to be delivered on July 13, My Freighter's chief executive officer, Mamur Mamadaliev, confirmed to ch-aviation.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows the Uzbek carrier's freighter fleet comprises three aircraft - two B767-300ER(BCF)s and one B767-300ER(BDSF). The company also has three A320-200s and one A321-200NX operated by scheduled passenger subsidiary Centrum Air (Tashkent International). In addition, it operates one ACJ319-100N, UK888 (msn 9012), for government use only.

“This commitment for additional capacity increases the global reach of our fleet, serving emerging e-commerce markets. Tashkent, Uzbekistan, is a great location to meet the growing need for geographical capacity,” said Mike Berger, chief executive of ATSG.

NEW AIRLINE - Australia's MinRes Air debuts flight operations

Mining company Mineral Resources Limited has commenced fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) flights using its in-house airline, MinRes Air (Perth International), and an A319-100 wet-leased from Skytraders (SND, Sydney Kingsford Smith).

Refurbished and repainted in MinRes Air's livery, the 15.5-year-old VH-VHP (msn 3757) completed a 3,600-kilometre sector from Brisbane International to Ken's Bore via Wodgina on July 2 with FIFO workers onboard. For most of this year, Mineral Resources has used Skytraders to operate FIFO flights in and out of Brisbane, but this week marks the debut of MinRes-branded flights.

During a half-yearly results announcement in February, Mineral Resources founder and MD Chris Ellison said the mining company already owned three airports and flying workers directly in without paying for overnight accommodation would save "tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars” annually.

Mineral Resources, which records revenues of around AUD5.5 billion Australian dollars (USD3.7 billion) annually, needs to carry around 5,000 workers per week on and off its remote sites, and a one-hour delay in starting a shift can cost the company around AUD1 million (USD670,000) in lost revenue, making an in-house airline a more cost-effective solution than relying on third-party operators.

However, the Skytraders lease is a stop-gap deal. MinRes Air has been hiring flight and ground crews and has reportedly recruited 20 captains and first officers at above-market rates. "We'll end up owning about four A319s by the end of this year," Ellison told shareholders. "We'll be the only mining company flying [our own aircraft]. We'll be direct out of Brisbane straight into Ken's Bore, Wodgina, Onslow, and shortly we'll be coming into Kambalda."

"Typically, a FIFO worker on the east coast has to pay their own fares to Perth overnight, at their own cost, and then they go up the Pilbara the next day," added Ellison. "So a day and a half each way, and they’ve got to write money out of their own pocket. We’re five-and-a-half hours from Brisbane, direct onto our mine sites, at our cost. We’re tapping a whole brand new workforce[...]. By the end of this year, all of our FIFO [flights] will be run by MinRes Air."

He concluded: "We’re going to reduce our camp sizes. We’re going to be able to land our people on-site at 5:30 in the morning, and they do a shift change at 6:00, and the night shift hops on the plane and goes home.”

FLEET - Air Canada secures additional B737-8s

Air Canada announced it has secured an agreement with lessor BOC Aviation for additional B737-8s. In total, the deal is for eight aircraft that will be delivered in 2024. After some modification, the aircraft are planned to enter commercial service in 2025.

Initially, the eight will be operated in a single class economy lay-out until they are reconfigured to "fully match the onboard experience our customers enjoy in Air Canada's narrow-body, two-cabin standard at a later date".

With this lease-agreement, the number of MAX8s in Air Canada's-fleet will grow to 49. Next to the MAX, the airline operates 33 Airbus A220-300s, five A319s, eighteen A320s, seventeen A321s, 20 A330-300s, eight B767-300Fs, six B777-200LRs, nineteen B777-300ERs, eight B787-8s, and 31 B787-9s.

FLEET - Tarom signs lease-agreement for MAX8s

CDB Aviation has announced on 2 July 2024 that is has signed a lease-agreement with Tarom for two Boeing B737-8s. The aircraft are coming from the lessors existing orderbook and are scheduled to be delivered in December 2025 and January 2026.

During the Farnborough Air Show of 2018, Tarom ordered five B737-8s directly with Boeing and these are still on the orderbook, which means the airline now plans to have at least seven B737-8s in the fleet. It's currently unclear when these will be delivered.

Tarom's current fleet consists of two ATR72-500s, four ATR72-600s, four Airbus A318s, four B737-700s, and four B737-800s.
