Sun Country Airlines starts Amazon cargo ops

Sun Country Airlines (SY, Minneapolis/St. Paul) deployed its first freighter aircraft in service for Amazon.com on May 7, the e-commerce giant said via Twitter.

B737-800(F) N547RL (msn 32348), an 18.8-year-old ex-Pegasus Airlines converted freighter, operated its first revenue flight as SY3004 from Tampa Int'l to Cincinnati Int'l, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. It has since been plying this route daily on behalf of Amazon.

Sun Country Airlines, thus far a low-cost leisure specialist with one B737-700 and thirty B737-800s, is planning to take a total of ten B737-800(F)s and operate them on behalf of Amazon. The cargo division is expected to contribute around 20% of the carrier's revenues when it is in full swing.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that a further two B737-800s for Sun Country Airlines are undergoing conversion and testing at Everett. N542RL (msn 32579) is an ex-Jet Airways (JAI, Mumbai Int'l) unit, while N545RL (msn 32601) was previously operated by Urumqi Air (UQ, Urumqi). Sun Country's first three B737-800(F)s are dry-leased from GECAS, the ch-aviation fleets ownership module shows.

So far, Amazon's US-based narrowbody freighter fleet has been limited to five B737-800(F)s all operated by Southern Air (9S, Cincinnati Int'l).
