LONDON, Oct. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Virgin Atlantic Airways are celebrating the delivery of the airline's first 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline is the first European airline to take delivery of the 787-9 and plans to operate the airplane initially on its London Heathrow to Boston route.
Virgin Atlantic's first 787-9 touched down at London's Gatwick Airport today following a more than 7,400 kilometer (4,000 nautical mile) nonstop flight from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The airplane, named 'Birthday Girl' in reference to the UK carrier's 30th anniversary, is the first of 16 787-9s Virgin Atlantic has ordered from Boeing.
"The first 787-9 in Europe will be a flagship for Virgin Atlantic's fleet, providing greatly improved efficiencies across its routes," said Todd Nelp, vice president of European Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The airplane, with its unique onboard features, will provide an unrivaled passenger experience, cementing Virgin Atlantic's reputation as a true innovator in air travel."
The 787-9 complements and extends the 787 family. The airplane leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering passenger-pleasing features such as large windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.
Based out of London's Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, as well as Manchester and Glasgow Airports, Virgin Atlantic Airways operates a fleet of approximately 40 airplanes. Along with its first 787-9, the British operator also has a Boeing fleet of 12 747-400s operating on routes across North America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
To date, nearly 60 customers from around the world have ordered more than 1,000 Dreamliners, approximately 40 percent of which are 787-9s.

QANTAS TO CELEBRATE KANGAROO LOGO ANNIVERSARY WITH RETRO LIVERY
For the first time in Qantas’ 94 year history, the airline will introduce a "retro" livery on one of its brand new Boeing 737 aircraft as a flying tribute to 70 years of its iconic kangaroo logo.
The original kangaroo symbol, that was adapted from the Australian one penny coin, was initially painted beneath the cockpit of Qantas’ first Liberator aircraft G-AGKT in 1944 following the airline’s decision to name its Indian Ocean passage the Kangaroo Service.Group Executive for Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Olivia Wirth said the kangaroo that now features on the tail of every single Qantas aircraft is well and truly part of the Australian story.
“For 70 years the flying kangaroo has been a symbol of aviation innovation around the world, driving higher standards in safety, technology, product and service,” said Ms Wirth.
“Our kangaroo logo represents our proud history, inextricably linked with the development of commercial aviation in Australia. It has also become a symbol of ‘home’ to Australians travelling both here and abroad.
“A retro livery is the perfect tribute to our iconic flying kangaroo logo and its 70th anniversary. While it serves as a nod to our heritage, having it fly on one of our brand new Boeing 737s highlights our commitment to being an aviation innovator when it comes to new aircraft and modern technology.
“Qantas has flown under many liveries throughout its 94 year history and I know this historic design will bring back a lot of memories for many of our customers who have chosen to fly with us over the years.”
Qantas will take delivery of its new Boeing 737 from the Boeing Factory in Seattle in late November. It will be the 75th Boeing 737-800 to join the Qantas fleet.
History of the flying kangaroo:
The original Kangaroo symbol appearing on Qantas aircraft was adapted from the Australian one penny coin.
1944 - The kangaroo was first painted beneath the cockpit of Qantas' first Liberator aircraft G-AGKT, following Qantas' decision to name its Indian Ocean passage the Kangaroo Service. The symbol featured on all later aircraft.
1947 - The winged kangaroo symbol was created for the introduction of Qantas’ Lockheed L749 Constellations. They were the first Qantas aircraft to carry the Flying Kangaroo and the first to operate right through to London with Qantas crews. The Flying Kangaroo was later placed in a circle.
1984 - The Flying Kangaroo lost its wings once again in an updated logo and was refined to a more slender, stylised presentation.
1995 - A logo created for the airline's 75th anniversary year was added to all Qantas jet aircraft. It brought together the Flying Kangaroo symbol and the words '75 years' to mark Qantas' contribution to civil aviation.
2007 - Qantas unveiled a new interpretation of its iconic logo, designed to reflect the changing structure of the airline's new generation aircraft, and keeping with Qantas' increasing focus on contemporary design for its in-flight and on-the-ground products.

Delta celebrates 10th anniversary of 'Breast Cancer One' survivor flight
Photo:Ton Jochems - AMS
ATLANTA /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Air Lines' (NYSE: DAL) annual "Breast Cancer One" employee survivor flight took place yesterday, kicking off the airline's month-long campaign to generate awareness and raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This year marked Delta's 10th annual survivor flight, which honored more than 140 employee breast cancer survivors with a trip from Atlanta to New York City.
"Delta employees across the globe are united in their passion and support for BCRF and its critical mission of finding a cure for breast cancer," said Sandy Gordon, Delta's Vice President – In-Flight Service Field Operations. "We are proud of our employees and customers, as they unite efforts and help us celebrate this major milestone."
The employee survivors, accompanied by Delta leaders and BCRF executives, traveled from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Survivors were celebrated and honored by Delta leaders, employees and customers during festivities at both airports including water cannon salutes and live music. In New York, survivors were treated to an overnight stay which included dinner and a meet-and-greet with some of BCRF's world-renowned researchers. Nearly 80 percent of the Delta employees involved were first-time participants.
As part of this year's initiative, Delta also hosted its first "Unsung Hero" social media contest. The airline encouraged customers who are survivors or currently battling breast cancer to share the story of the person who has provided countless hours of support during their journey. As a result, five customers and their unsung heroes were chosen to attend this year's flight.
"When Delta joined forces with BCRF 10 years ago, we knew we had an ally in this fight until the very end," said Myra Biblowit, President of BCRF. "With Delta, it's not just the company that is committed to ending breast cancer, every one of their employees is dedicated to the cause. Their partnership is personal, and that's what has made it such an enormous success."
To further raise awareness and support for breast cancer research, Delta employees will wear pink uniforms and sell pink products, including pink lemonade and pink headsets, on board and in Delta Sky Clubs during October. All proceeds from the airline's pink products will benefit BCRF.
Since 2005, Delta's support has contributed more than $7.9 million to BCRF, including last year's efforts of $1.25 million. Delta's contributions have funded the vital work of 31 different research projects over the years in the pursuit of eradicating breast cancer.
Delta's "Pink Plane"
Delta's international "pink plane," a Boeing 767-400, features BCRF's trademarked pink ribbon logo on the tail of the aircraft and adjacent to the boarding door. In 2012 the aircraft was formally dedicated to the memory of Evelyn Lauder who founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 1993. The aircraft flies international routes and will raise awareness for BCRF in London, Milan, Rio De Janiero, Sao Paulo, among others and the United States this year. Delta's first pink plane was a Boeing 757 that between 2005 and 2010 flew throughout the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean to generate awareness for the cause

New unique transportations of Ruslan
Ruslans that belong to ANTONOV Airlines continue performing a list of transported non−standard cargoes. Each of such transportations needs detailed preparations that confirm efficiency of close interaction between operators and aircraft developers.
At the end of September, the AN−124−100 delivered European experimental spacecraft IXV from Amsterdam (Holland) to French Cayenne (France). During the flight special temperature regime and tension in a cargo cabin was necessary to be kept.
A representative of Customer, THALES ALENIA SPACE French company noted: ‘Transportation was performed strictly according to schedule and met all the conditions. As always everything was efficiently organized’.
One more unique cargo Ruslan transported from Nantes (France) to Beijing (China). On its board the aircraft transported a mechanized dragon, a symbol of ‘horse−dragon spirit’. The dragon will participate in a China festival in a sign of 50−years anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China. This unique model, 12 m of height and 46 t of weight, was constructed in France by La Machine Company. Articulated binds in the dragon’s construction let it make different movements, throw out flame and emit streams of smoke. Movable dragon’s running part is made of steel and is decorated with wood. Eight operators are located inside the dragon to control it. The prototype is mounted on transport vehicle that let move with definite speed.
Specialists from the department of the ANTONOV Airlines cargo planning in close interaction with French engineers developed special technology of load/unload this unique cargo with the total mass of 55 t in Ruslan. Preparation to transportation lasted 3 months

Spring Airlines to become the first customer for Sharklet retrofit in China
China’s first LCC invests in new technologies for fuel-saving
Spring Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Shanghai, China, has signed an agreement with Airbus for Sharklet retrofit of its A320 aircraft in operation to become the first Chinese airline to perform retrofit of the latest fuel saving device.
Thanks to this aerodynamic upgrade, Spring Airlines’ retrofitted aircraft will benefit from a reduction in fuel costs by up to 4 per cent, an annual 900t reduction in CO2 emissions, an increased mission range by up to 100 nautical miles and improved performances at high elevation airports.
Spring Airlines took delivery of its first A320 with Sharklets in September 2013. Since then the operator has been evaluating the effect of Sharklets on the operational performance of its fleet of six Sharklet-equipped A320s. Based on the proven operational advantage observed from more than 8500 accumulated flight hours, Spring Airlines has decided to select Sharklets for all its new deliveries and now has decided to expand the option to its in-service fleet.
“We are delighted to be the first airline in China to perform Sharklet retrofit to our aircraft in operation,” said Wang Zhenghua, Chairman of Spring Airlines. “As a low-cost operator, Spring Airlines is committed to offering our passengers with the most efficient means of transportation but keeping the fares at a level which is affordable to the general public. We are willing to invest in new technologies that help us further reduce the operational cost of our all Airbus A320 fleet, which is already a benchmark of the industry,” Wang added.
“We are delighted to see Spring Airlines, the first low cost carrier in China, to take another pioneering step this time to become the first Chinese airline for Sharklet retrofit,” said Rafael Gonzalez-Ripoll, Chief Operating Officer, Airbus China. “We will provide Spring Airlines with the strongest support for the retrofit and for the smooth operation of the airline’s all Airbus fleet,” he added.
Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and standard on all members of the new A320neo family. They offer operators up to four per cent fuel burn reduction on longer range sectors and provide the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms.
Following the success of line-fit Sharklets, Airbus, via its Upgrade Services business unit, entered service with the retrofit programme in February 2013 for all A320 Family aircraft equipped with the latest standard wings
