China’s first low-cost carrier benefits from most efficient single-aisle aircraft
Spring Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Shanghai, China, has taken delivery of its first A320 aircraft equipped with Sharklet fuel saving wing-tip devices.
The A320, powered by CFM56 engines, features a single class economy cabin, seating 180 passengers. The A320 will make its first commercial flight from Shanghai to xx on September xx.
“We are very happy to receive our first A320 equipped with fuel-saving Sharklets,” said Wang Zhenghua, Chairman of Spring Airlines. “As a low-cost operator, Spring Airlines is committed to enabling more passengers to enjoy the efficiency of modern air travel by keeping the fares affordable. Airbus’ A320 Family aircraft help us reduce our operating costs while providing the best level of passenger comfort. The Sharklets will reduce fuel burn and emissions even further,” Wang added.
“We are delighted our A320 aircraft has played a key role in the success of Spring Airlines,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “Spring Airlines is a pioneering low-cost operator, and with the entry into service of the Sharklet equipped A320 in its fleet, it’ll help the airline reduce costs even further whilst offering the passengers the best cabin comfort of any single aisle aircraft,” Leahy added.
Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and standard on all members of the new A320neo family. They offer operators up to four per cent fuel burn reduction on longer range sectors and provide the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms.
Established in 2004, Spring Airlines is one of China's first private airline companies. It operates more than 50 domestic routes and several regional and international routes. Its fleet comprised 37 Airbus A320 jetliners by end of August 2013.
