Iran’s bid to modernise its aviation sector has reached another major milestone, with the placement of an 80-aircraft deal with Boeing.
The new contract, which was signed under the terms of the US government license allowing Boeing to trade with Iran, will see flag carrier Iran Air add 50 new single-aisle and 30 twin-aisle passenger aircraft to its fleet, worth a total of US$16.6 billion.
Iran Air has an aging fleet
It follows previous agreements signed with Airbus and ATR, and means that Iran now has outstanding orders for more than 200 Western-built aircraft. The Boeing order comprises 50 B737 MAX 8s, 15 B777-300ERs and 15 B777-9s
The final order is based on its Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) penned between Boeing and Iran Air in June 2016. Previously, economic sanctions meant that Iran was unable to renew its fleet, leaving Iran Air with an aging collection of pre-revolution aircraft.
President-elect Donald Trump had threatened to reverse any trade agreements relating to Iran.
