Air Europa (UX, Palma Son Sant Joan) has taken delivery of its maiden B787-9 following the arrival of EC-MSZ (msn 62171) in Madrid Barajas from Charleston, SC on Saturday, February 16.
Air Europa has a total of sixteen B787-9s due to deliver direct from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) between now and 2022. With a second aircraft of the type due in March, the aircraft will be used to boost capacity on the carrier's Madrid Barajas-Buenos Aires Ezeiza route, currently plied with smaller B787-8s. According to ch-aviation schedule data, the first such service is currently scheduled for March 1.
The Globalia Corporacion unit currently operates eight B787-8s with a further two due for delivery. Together with the -9s, the Dreamliners will be used to completely replace Air Europa's current Airbus widebody fleet of ten A330-200s and two A330-300s.
