On Thursday 12 February, the airline began weekly flights on the 5,887-kilometre route to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) using its 777s. No other carrier operates this route, which is now the airline’s longest, beating Beijing by over 900 kilometres. On Friday 13 February, a weekly flight to Riga (RIX) was added. The 3,281-kilometre route to Latvia will be operated by the airline’s 737-800s. Again, there is no competition on the route. In total, Turkmenistan Airlines now operates non-stop to 17 destinations from Ashgabat. “The new route enables the airports of Riga and Ashgabat to access new passenger transport markets, which is an essential condition for the passenger growth. This is also a new offer for transit passengers who will save time and money continuing their trip further – to Asian countries and China. On the other hand, the passengers coming to Riga will have access to the vast route network across Western Europe and Scandinavia,” said Andris Liepiņš, chairman of the board of SJSC Riga International Airport.
